Lot of hypocrisy by media there too mind you, just look at the way they were relentlessly after Ben Rutton’s blood and Teague’s last year and many more before that. Did anyone stop to think how the constant banter and humiliation affect these individuals and their families? They’ll keep bashing it until it achieves what they want and then move onto the next thing.
l’m confused, if Zorko has a mental health issue over the pile-on from the media for a statement he agrees was wrong and apologised for, should the club not support him? Or should they abandon him the mob? Basically that’s what Daly was saying.

I don’t condone what Zorko said, and don’t think he will be captain next year, but the social media pile-ons are becoming far worse than the original offence.

I think Neil should be made captain regardless of this event, it's really just a matter of paperwork. He is the club leader, in preparation, in action and example. He doesn't need to do anything more than he does to be our talisman. A captain is one who holds their heads when others panic, who set examples. I still remember when Raynor was drafted, he took quiet calls from Fagan and Zorko but when Hodgey rang him he just lost his sh1t. Neil is one of those guys you look around and just pinch yourself to be playing with and will bring a much needed quiet, reassuring presence to a side who are obviously about to undergo some major maintenance to proceed.

As for Zorko some of the reactions here are pretty extreme. He has stood up and captained when we got shafted by Beams, has grown a lot in that time but still seems too liable to letting frustrations get the better of his judgement. I'm guessing we will never hear exactly what played out that night but some seem to want to hang him on hearsay.

Dane isn't going anywhere (except maybe the backline) and might just come back a new man with the title of captain removed from him. We could see him rejuvenated by not bearing the weight of expectations of a club on the cusp of greatness. I'm disappointed but will back him in none the less.

Social media anger is another form of sledging .

YOU ARE NOT LISTENING OR AS THEY SAY "NEED TO READ THE ROOM BETTER" OF HOW YOUR MEMBERS/SUPPORTERS FEEL ABOUT ALL THIS FIASCO......WE ARE NOT HAPPY, WE WANT ZORKO FINED AND STRIPPED OF THE CAPTAINCY. NOW!

The club is a laughing stock because of the very poor handling of this latest Zorko effort. It's weak, Zorko's mental health doesn't come in to it as far as I'm concerned. Did he give that same consideration to Petty?
Can't say I recall a club ever making a decision based on what the members want.

As for the bolded section, in an age where we as a community are trying to do so much for mental health, especially men's mental health, it's a very poor comment. (And for the record I didn't even think he deserved to be captain this season based on previous behaviour)

Good post, but it shits me (almost as much as shallow boundary throw ins) when our own supporters butcher the spelling of our own players.

You've gone 0 from 3 there.

0 from 4 if you include your avatar.

Great post and you are right I could do with a sub editor, how about it Rawwick ol' boy? ;)

The good clubs don't.

The Carltons and Essendons OTOH...

there was an interesting comment by hodge in the media that clug is the player he thinks still has another level to go to and could be the best player in the comp

he could be an S Grader mid
What is an S Grader mid? (unless being AA does not mean you are an A Grader and it was a typo in which play on)

S tier would basically be the best of the best. Top 10 in the comp.

I'm at an age now where I've seen family, friends and others suffer through cancer. Sadly young people as well.

We were getting belted and Zorko in the heat of the moment as is his wont thought he'd try to put Petty off his game. It was wrong and he went too far.

But he seriously didn't mean what he said about Petty's mother , Petty would know this . He apologised , obviously that's not enough. I personally don't take offence on behalf of all the people I've been involved with through chemo and death through cancer.

The pile on here over Zorko will probably go on forever till they get rid of him. I'm certain he's ashamed and embarrassed as he should be but the reaction of some people is right over the top.

I was lost my mum to cancer, IMO sorry is not enough.

You can only do so many dumb things in life until someone calls you out.

Zorko was trying to get under Petty's skin and he went to the bottom of the barrel to get there.

There needs to be repercussions and at the moment I feel can't support this team until something more than a hollow apology is made.

Leaders need to set the example for others to follow, if this is an example of our captains leadership style, we can do better.

So the S would kind of stand for 'super' or 'superlative' then? Thank you :)
The S I have always interpreted as "Special", but it seems like a hotly debated topic. This article links it to the Japanese Academia where their A+ is sometimes given as an S. Considering the importance of japanese gaming companies in the history of video games, seems like a solid theory.

Apologies for coming here but I don't agree.

The club is making it a lot worse by pulling the mental health card. They can privately support him, but coming out with this statement just further fans the flames.

They should have punished him in the first place rather than a slap on the wrist, then the social and traditional media wouldn't have piled on as much. People were expecting a response to bad behaviour and got nothing, so they give their own response.

I don’t think they have “played the mental health card”. That’s lazy cliched criticism. Their first response was to condemn what he said and apologise. Melbourne didn’t want to take it any further and were satisfied with the club’s handling of it.

Moving forward the club has a professional responsibility to look after the well being of its staff, Zorko included. While the situation Zorko is in is essentially all self-inflicted, the media furore would definitely be putting him under significant emotional stress and the club is obligated to ensure he is okay.

“Playing the mental health card” has always meant using mental health as a way to explain, mitigate or excuse bad behaviour. That is clearly not what has happened here, and it doesn’t help anyone to claim otherwise. At no stage have Zorko or the club tried to rationalise, minimise or excuse Zorko’s deplorable comments.

A little bit of vigilantism disguised as morality going on. Ultimately this is an issue between Zorko, Petty, the Lions, the Demons and the AFL. All of those parties appear to feel the issue has been resolved appropriately amongst themselves and they don’t want any more of it to play out publicly in a media that cares only for clicks.

Zorko will pay a significant price in a range of ways. He clearly will not be captain next year, will lose endorsements and he has drastically limited his post-playing career options at clubland and in the media.

As fans we can have opinions and express them but we aren’t entitled to anything beyond that.

Zorko has hurt this club. A price must be paid.

Watching Friday on the telly I went

Zorko don't be a grub
Zorko stop being a grub.
Zorko ffs you are a grub.

Was not surprised he went overboard. It won't happen, but I would go as far as dropping him for Dev next week.

I don't want to outlive my welcome here so I'll make this my last post and you can agree or not.

They are playing the mental health card to shut down any further ramifications or debate on what Zorko said, and how the club has responded. Imo they are now trying to sweep it under the rug and move the narrative on. In 2022, the mental health card is a perfect strategy to use for such things

I don’t agree again with your misunderstanding of the “mental health card”.

I do agree that the Lions want to move on. So does Petty and the Melbourne FC.

We are talking about a 33 year old man. He certainly knew what he was doing, do not act like he is a child playing under 14's. There is no free pass for what he said, white line fever or not.

To be the captain of a professional football club and saying things like that, is totally unacceptable and any social "pile on" is totally warranted when it's hardly the first incident either. He has lost the faith of our supporter base and quite frankly I'd be worried if he hasn't lost the faith of the playing group & club.

He should be ashamed, he should be embarrassed and he should hand over the captaincy immediately after the finals is over.
