Gwilt didn't do a lot wrong to lose his spot in the side. I thought he was more than serviceable for the whole afternoon.
Gunston is a very good player any medium sized defender would have trouble keeping him in check Gwilt did ok stays in.
If Gwilt stays then who comes out for Fletch?
Hooker, Hurley, Fletch and Gwilt can't all play in the back line in the one game IMO.

Fletch in this week and for Anzac Day then will rest for the Saints which will in turn allow Gwilt to return against his old side

Gleeson played well but let Breust through to almost score the winning goal. Still learning. He would be in the mix to make way to Fletch.

you've got to be kidding. after laying this tackle?

As previously mentioned, I just reckon many posters are being influenced by this ^great game saving tackle into thinking Ambrose played an awesome game.
He was patchy so threw his name up as a possible out. Don't worry probably this time next year he will be a lock in the best 22.
This week the selectors might want to go with McKernan to give Belly a 20% chop out in the ruck and leave JD in the goalsquare...

Gotta love it when posters suggest resting players after 2 games ! You should not be on an AFL List if you can't play 3 consecutive games.
It's a balancing act...
If the likes of Cooney and Chappy play this week that will make it 3. Next week against Collingwood Anzac Day understandably they won't want to miss it so that will make it 4.

Selectors could go with..
Rd 3 v Carlton MCG =
Chappy plays, Cooney rested
Rd 4 v Coll MCG=
Both Chappy and Cooney play
Rd 5 v StK Etihad=
Cooney plays, Chappy rested
Rd 6 v Freo Subi=
Not sure what is best to do

Do what I'm doing in the OP, make Chappy sub this week, and sub Cooney out maybe 10 minutes into the 2nd half, both play ANZAC Day, Chappy rested for St. Kilda and Cooney sub, then both play Freo.

With the amount of tuning these players are going through I feel its an old fashioned notion that "resting" is arrogant or a bad thing.

In the modern game The cumulative loads the players build up over a season often mean that after 6-7 games in a row they are running at 85%-90%. Every team has lulls throughout a season, Port are the fittest team in the league-Running wise- and they fell off a cliff last year when their loads became too much. Howlett for us is another who when 100% is a great player but he slowly reduces in output as he struggles to run out games. Our team is yet to prove it can run out a full season. Why then should the competition just expect these lulls that all teams have to continue? Most of the time the answer is, oh we will just train them harder or for longer. Why not just be smarter with the loads they take on?

There is nothing wrong with trying to balance those loads, especially through the midfield, it also gives games to our 2nd tier players and allows for a more well rounded, healthy list. Kav looks like he might be ready to maybe become an AFL player, whats wrong with after 2-3 heavy games taking howlett out and putting him in and getting some games in. Same with the two merrets, or rest chappy and play goddard more forward. Fletch has been getting rested for years without a really suitable replacement, but now we have Gwilt.

Resting is not a bad thing, as long as its not wholesale changes.

Yeah that sounds alright to me.
Only concern would be the Freo @ subi game whether we would play both

This.
I'd rather have one player "rested/rotated" each week than have say bulk changes four players rested against StKilda in three weeks and come across as cocky and lose the unloseable game

Seriously we are a couple of games in and people already want to start resting players. Remove your heads from your arses. We've had A win, a good win, but that's all. How about we string a season together without falling in a heap first then you might be able to start mentioning players being rested.
You should know by now from past seasons that there is a history of not showing up against the lesser teams and only showing full potential against the top 4 sides.
Rest no one. Win everything!

I'd like to see minimal changes to the team that toppled the reigning premiers. Not a fan of fixing something that isn't broken unless there is a forced change. There is no player who had a real bad game from what I have seen. Gwilt was alright. Wouldn't be upset if he was swapped for Fletcher though.

I wouldn't mind seeing one of Langford or Laverde debut if Howlett doesn't get up for this match.

Deja vu! Yes lets win everything. And as such lets start resting those who need it so that we have players out there going at 100%. As you see your argument can be used to support either side. As such you need a new argument.

Exhibit A of people thinking resting is a sign of complacency.

You also provide an incredibly good arguement for managing players game times whilst trying to argue against it in that we are yet to string a season together.
2 games in is too early to make wholesale resting calls, yes you are correct, but its not like people are suggesting resting our whole team and our best players. Just managing the loads of the older guys and younger players of a shorter break and never more than 1 at a time.

There is also nothing wrong with leaving a player out such as Howlett who was subbed out with injury to replace with say a Kav to get gametime into our younger players. We dont want go all year playing 23-24 players when suddenly 2 rounds out from finals we are hit with a couple of injuries and we are suddenly bringing in players for their first game of the season.
We have a squad of players, use the damn thing to its full potential instead of relying on the same players week in week out.

having said all that only changes id make would be outs-howlett,gwilt, one of chappy or meret. Ins- Kav, fletch and older merret
