Cats coaches votes: running tally and analysis

I kept a running tally of this in autopsy threads through 2023. I've decided to just make its own thread in 2024. It's one way to measure who is consistently having a high level impact in games.

Here is the leaderboard for number of times listed in the coaches votes:

Dangerfield was probably headed for more coaches votes on the weekend, which would have put him in the proportional lead at 75%. He remains a high impact player when he can get on the park, as he was even through our difficult 2023 with his second half of the season ruined by niggles/knocks.

Holmes is off to a fantastic start and could maybe end up a smokey for AA contention if he keeps this form up.

Cameron has replicated his strong start to 2023. Let's hope he gets a good run at it and continues it this year.

Miers efforts are being rewarded more than they were in 2023. One more time in the votes would match his season last year.

Stewart rounds out the top 5, as expected.

Stengle's uptick in form has been recognised.

Otherwise, a good spread so far.

    This is why pre-season I was beating the drum that Holmes for us could easily emerge into a Rozee-type player with that sort of output. Fair enough this year it's involved a slight role change but in time I think he can have this influence in midfield. At the moment as a 21 year old he is consistently finishing around the 5th best player on the ground. His improvement could see that turn into more of the BOGs and near-BOGs that the top midfielders roll in commonly, and that he did against Melbourne.

    Mitch "Retire Already" Duncan has only featured in the coaches votes less often than Holmes and Cameron in 2024.

    Holmes has the lead, while Cameron is up into 2nd after bouncing back from his lean patch.

    Stewart's move to midfield has shot him up the leaderboard.

    Not much at all separates Stengle, Zuthrie, Bowes and Dempsey if you combine the two coaches votes metrics.

    Miers has not featured for a long while.

    This is great reading.

    267 votes given out. 37% to players over 30.

    Holmes, Miers, Stengle, and Zach Guthrie together poll more than the combined votes for all 8 players over 30.

    The best thing about this list is the amount of young players in it instead of the usual 30+ brigade carrying us it is everyone from rookies to mid 20s with a few older blokes chipping in.

    Bodes well for the future if we can continue with good drafting/trading over the next 2-3 years as we slowly transition more of the 30+ players out.

    I distinctly remember the Draft thread going troppo when Wells traded up to get him - and not in a good way.

    That is the one in which we traded a future first with Richmond for Its current first which was about 20 right?

    Nail on the head.

    Of our top 6 most frequent coaches votes getters in 2023, Miers was the only one in the 18-26 year old bracket.

    Our top 6 most frequent in 2024 now includes Holmes, Miers, Stengle and Zuthrie from that bracket.

    For coaches votes totals, in 2023 our top 13 contained 8 players in their 30s.

    In 2024, our top 13 coaches votes tallies has had 4 players in their 30s.

    Movement in the table this week!

    For total votes: Cameron climbs into 1st place (where a player of his talents should obviously be), Stewart jumps Miers into 3rd and Dangerfield edges ahead of Stengle into 5th despite the latter still getting votes. A fine effort for Dangerfield to be polling solidly at his age, broken down, missing games and playing with low time on ground.

    Stewart is really powering on after a lean period in the middle of the season - genius move Scotty but well done to Tommy on adapting to the new role.

    Mannagh picks up votes for a 2nd time.

    I thought so too. He's had a few notable games over the past 2 seasons that have been vote-worthy where he hasn't had any. And this has then been used against him - "when did the coaches actually give him votes?".

    Dangerfield was pretty effective on the weekend as far as bulldozing and territory but was quite scrappy. I thought Bruhn's moments were a bit more decisive and influential as the game went on.
