Usually done by soccer players who score a goal the equalises or gets the lead in an away game - as in "that shut you up" to the crowd. So made little sense in this context.
My favourite is when you watch a game of junior soccer and a player scores a goal with 30 people present who are more interested in their phones and then does the “shoosh” gesture in front of a non-existent crowd.

Junior soccer is the absolute worst.

Lack of creativity!! 😂 Terrible call.
Hey BORIS332 - this is a genuine question because you seem to have seen a fair bit of the widdle wizard as a junior:

He seems to enjoy being a shitstirrer and loves a cheap niggle. Has this always been his go or is this new? From my limited exposure to him he seems to be very lippy when he has back up and when he knows the opposition can’t afford to retaliate. It was almost like he was trying to impress ginnivan and the hawks try-hard crew.

Is this natural for him or has been influenced by his environment?

Ok. Reading back I don't really get it. Hawks are dumb because they could have used pick 5 on another player? But then would there have been any guarantee they pick up Watson later if he was the one they wanted? It's abstract. All I know is Betts was an absolute genius footballer. One of the best ever for his position.

That's because it is abstract,

At the time of recruitment clubs aren't sure if they are recruiting a Betts or Lindsey Thomas or Byrnes or a Darren Michington. With early pick there are less uncertainty but there is still plenty of it. One thing they do have control over is the (perceived) starting traits of the player they choose bring in. Just because a team spends pick 5 on a player doesn't mean that their investment was justified. Historically speaking the traits of a Watson style recruit don't cost a pick 5. I remember the hype over Daniel and I think he has justified it to a decent extent and he only cost the Bulldogs pick 46. Had Daniel been 10 cm taller he'd with his skill he would have had a completely different level of potential, had he been 20 cm taller he'd probably be close to the best player in the competition. These days players with traits like Duursma don't tend to last more than the top 5. 170 cm goal sneaks often get overlooked completely.

A way to view a driver of success is that over a long enough period of time clubs will have a similar access to resources to acquire players. The clubs that can utilise theirs more efficiently will have an advantage on the field over those that don't. Games are won by being able to do something to your opponent that they can't do to you. At the moment we have very little so we chase an unconventional advantage to stay competitive. Developing teams buy as many Duursmas they can hoping to get a Petracca or two.

Ok so I've watched 10 mins of his under 18 highlights and I genuinely don't see any evidence of creativity.

Almost every possession up the ground is running in a straight line, collecting the ball and then delivering in that straight line. There's no spotting a player at an angle to the play and wrong footing the defence or turning his body in a way to change the angle of the attack. That's what I mean when I say he lacks creativity.

He clearly is a very natural forward. He times his leads well, reads the flight of the ball well, gets to good positions when crumbing, etc.

He'll be at least a decent small forward. But I don't see the elite traits of a Rankine or Pickett or Bobby Hill. And I don't think picking up a player projecting somewhere between Dylan Moore and Tom Papley is worth anywhere near a top 5 pick especially when you already have Moore and Ginnivan on your list.

Always has been, it's a rite of passage for small forwards.

As much as some would love to put the blame on Hawthorn and their penchant for smug players over the journey, Watson's always been like this.

Milne, Ballantyne, Greene, Medhurst, Ginnivan, the list goes on. Players who you love when they are in your colours, but can't stand otherwise.

Whether it's just small man syndrome, or its something they deliberately add to their game is unknown...but it's a very common trend.

Happens all over the world, so we're not unique in that regard. Different positions welcome different traits and characteristics.

Over in the states, Cornerbacks are almost exclusively the best 'trash talkers' on their teams, Quarterbacks are typically the most handsome, things of that nature.

Are you answering this from seeing him at junior level? Or are you basically assuming it is the case because he is a small forward?

I could have made that assumption, but I was hoping someone could inform me based on having observed him as a junior.

Look i don't know enough about him other than he kicked a mountain of goals in the under 18s, but as he is a Hawthorn I hope he is an absolute bust for them
End of.

I saw two kids at junior soccer standing over a free kick cover their mouths and whisper to each other what they are going to do... the Pros only do that because their are cameras on them, the kids doing it was hilarious.

I just checked back and Stephen Milne finished 9th in the B&F in 2010 and missed the top 10 in 2009. Betts finished 10th in Adelaide's B&F in 2017.

Two all time great small forwards weren't considered the really important members of Grand final teams despite having very good years (Milne won the goal kicking in 2010 and Betts was AA in 2017).

Pick 5 seems a heap to pay if that is the absolute ceiling of what you could get.

Always been his thing.

As draftees/juniors, Watson was miles ahead of both Pickett and Bobby Hill. Rankine better, I agree there.

Junior soccer is the ultimate nursery for creating ****wits. It is like a Petri dish full of arseh*le bacteria

Ease up. I'm sure there are plenty of people on here whose kids play junior soccer or maybe played themselves.
If kids try to emulate their idols on TV and get it a bit wrong, is that the worst thing? At least they're out there enjoying playing a sport instead of typing vitriol on a computer.

They'd have been better off with Sanders, surely. Or a key position player.

They've got inside mids covered. But they probably could've split the pick to get one of the key position players and maybe a later pick like Wilson. Or Caleb Windsor looks quality.
True enough, although the temptation to pick the best midfielder must still always be there.

A key forward and key back would still be on their list of needs. They could also do with some classy, quick outside players for the wings and flanks. Those won't as typically come in the first 5 picks but maybe pick splitting was a good idea in this case.
