I'll always scratch my head over the decision to drop Stanley for the Collingwood QF. It really did mess with our team structure, especially when it came to Blitz. And Scotty's excuse being, "We dropped Stanley because we thought it was going to rain," was a weird one too.

I remember the commentators pre-game absolutely stunned live on air when it came in Stanley was dropped, and then the entire week which followed Geelong supporters and the media just went in on Chris Scott. It was a bloodbath. Thankfully we came out and won the next week; that was the most I ever saw Scotty under the pump from supporters and the media. Selwood even mentioned after the SF win how he was happy to win for the coach after the hate he got all week. I literally only remember all this because it was just so randomly intense!

Love Scotty to absolute bits, but anyone who says dropping Stanley wasn't a super strange decision is rewriting history. It stands out even today because Scotty rarely makes mistakes, which is a good thing for us, having such an excellent senior coach.

Chris Scott is not the perfect coach of course, but he's pretty damn close to it! Imagine if we had Bevo, Hinkley or Ross lmao. You shudder to think. Love yah, Scotty!
If we had Bevo or Ross as coach i wouldn't watch footy

My thoughts are that it was done for one reason that Scott could not say upfront: Stanley was playing like shit, and did not deserve to be selected.

We had a shock loss against Hawthorn late in the year, where Stanley was absolutely smoked by Ben McEvoy, and he was then dropped for a number of games in the lead-up to finals. That wasn't the only time he had well beaten by an otherwise average opposing ruckman in later 2019; Rowan Marshall had a day out on him, a very young Reilly O'Brien took the points on him, and Scott Lycett absolutely schooled him.

The decision now looks so wrong because Grundy killed us, and Stanley went on to have three consistent years from 2020 to 2022. But at the time, I got it - even though we didn't have a ready-made replacement, Stanley did not deserve to be picked.

Honestly, I don't think he's ever been brilliant. Serviceable, good, very good at times, yes. But not brilliant.
He can be, but it's once or twice a season. It's why people where so frustrated with him particularly between '16-20.

Nowadays, I think everyone's accepted that this is just what he is.

I don't think anyone gets frustrated with talentless spuds. You don't expect anything, and they've never shown you that they could be anything other than that.

Stanley has had tantalising moments, to go with all the physical tools. It's why he copped shit on here for so long.

It's like that old belief that coaches are only hard on the players that they KNOW can be better. Supporters are every similar in that regard.

fair enough, we see it differently. I love the speed running out of the middle into the forward line, like a gazelle. Brilliant perhaps too strong.

Watching the Cats v Dogs replay, noticed.
Stanley has now adopted a Grundy tactic.
As ball is bounced he moves to opponent.
Taking away his run and to gain front position.
Careful not to block by staying within reach of ball.
This negates other ruckman winning clean taps.
Watch start Q3 : 3 goals are scored in 3 min.

Maths is my strong point

Going 5-0 would jump us ahead of Sydney on the ladder

Now to jump ahead of GWS and into first there’s a bit more to consider

If we can keep North to less than 50points, we’d need to win by approx 90 points to boost our percentage above GWS’s and take top spot - while that sounds nice in theory, the first priority should be the win, and as we’ve seen this weekend we shouldn’t discount any team

I doubt the Cats will over exert with a short turnaround interstate next up chasing top spot on percentage, they might be comfortable with a 6 goal win easing up.

Should win by 10 goals but all signs are aligning to upset round.....
NM supporters are not deluded generally, and many state that the teams we have played and the teams they have played can account for W-L. They are not saying they will win, but will give a very good account of themselves this week, and this sort of game , at home, highly fancied, some outs , if a minimal drop off in intensity and hunger, and we drop this game. That sounds like an upset, but as you say, that is this round in a nutshell.
And wow, I would be upset.

We won't lose. I don't see a loss or a massive win in the cards tbh.

Reckon it's going to be a typical 'lazy' Geelong win that we've been accustomed to for nearly 20 years now. Game is never in doubt after the first quarter, but you're left wanting a little bit more.

Similarly, I can see a dour scrap where we pull away at the end. It would suck, but it would still be a W in the column.

Coach killer margin or a loss of the two least likely scenarios IMO.

Upset Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night with the crows. Happy for the Sunday upset to be west coast over Richmond🤞

Luckily there is zero cause-effect when it comes to unrelated events.

Unless you reckon Clarko is gonna go "Hey lads, looks like it's underdog weekend. Why don't we try and win this one then?"
