Yeah that's another problem. There is almost no jeopardy, particularly for big clubs. They are just protecting the big clubs to make sure they all get through and then have big fixtures for the knockouts.

In the old format, there was always one or two groups where a big club was in trouble, and they might not make it out of the group because of a shock result here and there.

This 36 team table where 24 of them make it through. Zero jeopardy and you already know who is going out. In the old format, it was less games and more chances that a couple of good results can force a crazy upset, now each team is playing 8 games instead of 6, so the chances of a big team falling over are almost zero.

The "Champions League" has become a strange chimera. Of course, you don't have be a champion to be in it these days. And it's mostly a cup rather than a league.

At first there's a home and away knockout phase, then a league with no home and away, then home and away play-offs from that league, then another home and away knockout phase, then a one-off final.

But there is still some jeopardy. Only the top 8 in this league stage are guaranteed to go through. The next 16 have to play off against each other. At the moment Bayern and PSG are in the unseeded positions.

I used to watch the Champions League because the group stages had a bit of jeopardy in the group phase, but now because it's two games longer and not much jeopardy is known until the end I'm actually finding it boring

Yeah I havent been bothered by the games at all. Zero jeopardy for Liverpool. We will easy through very easily.

But in the old set up, if say we'd lost opening game against AC Milan, then suddenly the pressure it on to get out of the group etc. If you dont win that second game, then it's very problematic. Every game felt important.

These new CL games dont at all.

I'd argue the previous format was boring as batshit because you would draw Real Madrid twice, get scunnered, Real Madrid qualify, then they don't care about the last game and gift the team you are competing against for 2nd and 3rd free points.

End of the day the round of 16 will end up the same teams as always.
