05/06 against some very very average Vic teams was the last time I would rock up and was even remotely confident we might get a win at the MCG...

Still have chills around circa 2010 when Melbourne (Yes, Melbourne in their epic shytness period with Moloney and Jamar) destroying us by about ~80ish points at the MCG....

the round 1 2009 (Tex first game) is probably the absolute anomaly...
I think that was in 2011, I was in Perth and following via the app. Moloney set the clearance record and we lost by 96 I think?

And we made one change the week after

Out: Taylor Walker

Yeah but the Crows played tough footy*

*According to Neil Craig.

God what a shit coach he was, carried by the talent we had in 2005/06. Imagine being such a dropkick that you attack your own side after one of their best, most hard fought wins in a home and away season ever. It was even Richard Tamblings best game for us, and he was hung out to dry by Craig for standard hard play. Then of course the playing group deliver our all time worst performance in a game the following week, Craig should have been sacked then. Though it was poetic that the corrosponding away flogging at the hands of St Kilda was what finished Cwaigy off.

1) Another crap year and he’ll be lucky to see 2023.

2) That first half last week was grounds enough to start wondering whether the players like him too much to respect him.

3) They need to start playing for him.
1) Could be, but would mean a 2-year payout with Roo et al having to admit they got it wrong.
Btw, I wasn't saying that I want him sacked or that he should get sacked, but the AFC has a record of not tolerating repeated failures. If the Crows don't show winning signs of life, Nicks will be gone.

2) I hadn't looked at it like that, but yeah, maybe it's all too chummy to be effective. They did play 35-40 minutes of really good football but they would all know that's not enough.

3) Do players play for their Coach eg the Dogs for Bevo, Richmond for Dimma, the Dees for Goodwin?
I can see that the players' respect for their Coach is part of the unity of purpose that wins Flags.

I looked hard at Australia's loss to Japan last night in the World Cup qualifiers. I'd been out and a mate texted me because I'd asked for updates: "0-0 fifty minutes in".
I replied with prescient aRse: "Japan will score once or twice late, betcha", and three things stood out:
--- Australia doesn't don't have the cattle
--- they have a terrible, back-passing game plan (from Centre to full-back, from CHF to CHB, often) which is negative, time-wasting, possession-holding garbage. They tire themselves out by nullifying opponents' opportunities. Meanwhile, oppo teams stack their defence.
--- that second point is on the Coach, Arnold, because of the first.

Similarly, the Crows don't have the cattle. At their frequent worst, the mids don't run both ways, their "game plan" is woeful (keep the ball out of the D50 as much as possible, bomb away forward, bring the ball to ground to use up time and restrict opponents' opportunities, allegedly to bring the small forwards into the game) and that's on Nicks because of the personnel and their inexperience.
The Crows cannot play like a Top-4 side because they are not one.

Nicks has been very brave to take on the job/rebuild and I admire his positive energy, but the Crows Premiership drought has continued and will continue and I doubt that he's the Coach to break it :'(.
I really hope I'm wrong. Just can't see it.

Oof at that Nicks presser.

Mentions the heat multiple times.

2 year player Thilthorpe seemingly held to a tougher standard than 5 year player Himmelberg.

Admits Himmelberg looked gassed in round 1, selects him anyway.

Admits that short term results are being prioritised over development.

Essentially admitted that Milera wasn't ready and was gifted a game in round 1. Mentioned even Milera himself doesn't think he's ready yet.

Says Pedlar will be played as a forward, has been training with the forwards over the preseason. 🤦‍♂️

Persisting with Sloane in the midfield.
That sounds about right for AFC...

We've brought in 3 players who have played about 10 games between them and didn't select Laird...hardly putting short term results ahead of long term ones
I probably could of worded that a little better. That comment was referring to Thilthorpe. Nicks admits in the presser that KPF's take time to develop. He wants him to smooth out his rough edges in the SANFL for the time being. I feel that this will only slow Thilthorpe's development.

Playing Himmelberg is a complete waste of time too. His papers should be stamped by now.

TT is in his 2nd year , usually a tough year for key forwards

I think he will be fine , play some good games this year but be far more consistent next year

I do think he’s a natural ruck so I can also see him playing high ruck minutes in future even though I hope he develops his forward craft to the point he stays put forward
I agree that TT will be a better player than Berg. But at the moment I just dont see TT contesting enough. He appears to be easy to push off the mark. He doesn't take many contested marks. But thats at the moment. Berg for me just doesnt have the skills and the coordination to be a key forward. I just dont think that he is the type of player we need. We need a strong, speedy 190cm forward who can hit the packs and take a contested mark. I dont think they grow on trees but thats what we need up forward. Add in a TT and a Tex along with our smaller forwards (thank god for Rachelle) and then we have a forward line. I was hoping that Fog or even McAsey could be that player but at the moment I am not convinced.

Needs 3-5 years , I think he will end up a beast

He’s not Max King / Ben King level of talent though I don’t think

To me he’s probably a ruck/ forward too in future

Nicks: "“We wanted to reward him last week for his efforts and it was invaluable having him exposed to the AFL level.".
What a crap reason to play Milera! "Thanks for sticking it out in 2020 and 2021, here, have a game against Freo".

It doesn't take much to decipher the above:
1) he selects players foolishly for AFL games to reward them "for [their] efforts", not necessarily because they are 100% ready to go, to make a full contribution.
It's consistent with selecting underperforming and/or injured senior players eg based on last week's game, both Sloane and O'Brien could well have been dropped, retaining Thilthorpe (who needs AFL games and not to shine in the seconds) and promoting Strachan. But, no.
2) Nicks has forgotten (somehow) that Milera had played 62 AFL games in 5 seasons and would be well in touch with the speed of AFL footy from that. He's 25 in September ffs.
His confidence and execution would be well down after such a long absence (and they were); let him tear it up in the SANFL and earn his spot back in the AFL side. But, no.

Please, bookmark this and if I am wrong, great:
After another crap year in 2022, Nicks will be sacked about 12 rounds into a crap 2023 season.

What?

He's being rewarded for his efforts across the preseason, having been excellent and surpassing expectations at every point.

Bringing him back and playing an AFL game was the final step, and it's invaluable to have now done that, because his recovery wouldn't be completed until that's achieved.

That's obviously what he meant. I didn't bother reading the rest of your post because you'd had such an L at your initial comprehension.

He’s lacking confidence, you can see it in his attack on the footy

Your complaints about Nicks sound more and more like our complaints about Hinckley every week.

They both seem to favour the same horribly inefficient territory game plan that relies entirely on contested ball without any focus in finesse.

One would be forgiven for thinking that 90% of Nicks’ coaching experience was under Hinkley.

I've always seen him as a stepping stone. It's like the Crows are holding out for the next 'real' coach.
