Again, Berry can still play midfield minutes if he's starting in Murphy's role. This would just be to solidify his position in the side by having a role that he can make his own while he is cementing himself as best 22.
Why are you worrying about this now, when the likelihood of it happening in the next month is next to nil?

Sure, they can plan for the future, but there's no need to worry about it now. Crouch is a month away, Hately's a break glass in case of emergency player, and Pedlar is about to play his first SANFL game. Berry's position is completely secure for now, and there's no need to worry about re-roling him for the foreseeable future.

** And Murphy's position is nowhere near as insecure as you think it is. Berry will be dropped before Murphy, and you can take that to the bank.

Because IMO we really don't need to play Murphy in the side if we have a better option available in Berry (who can also play midfield), and then it frees up a spot for another higher ceiling player to get games in the meantime.

But there's going to be room for both of them in the side for at least the next month. You're worrying about something that's 6-8 weeks away at best, and has a good chance of not happening at all if injuries open up another midfield position (as is likely given the timeframe).

You're tilting at windmills.

And that's the point. We need Berry in the side to continue doing what he does to help the team. But with more mid's coming back into the team is he going to maintain his current role? Maybe? Probably not?

But could he maintain his spot in the side at the expense of Murphy and his role while still pitch hitting in the middle? Abso-f**ken-lutely
“More mids coming back into the team” ?

Crouch I grant you. He is supposedly 5 ish weeks away. In the unlikely event we’ve had zero other injuries in the meantime then yes Berry’s CBAs will fall.

Hately? Nope, at least I hope not
Jones? His SANFL form would want to be dominant for several weeks
Pedlar? Let’s see how he goes in the SANFL once he’s not injured
O’Connor? Seems unlikely

That’s it isn’t it?

You make it sound like there’s a queue...

You're missing the point. I don't want both in the side, I want Berry in the side permanently. I don't think our team is better with Murphy long term then it could be with guys like FOG, Worrell, Fish, Thilthorpe, Jones etc who I would rather get games into now.

Berry can play that Murphy role as well as spend time in the middle, and we can tweak the setup to play a far higher ceiling player then Murphy.

Thats fair, its not an immediate issue for mids coming back, but if we can cement his spot and free up another spot for another higher ceiling guy to play ahead of Murphy that would be my preference.

Bottom line is I want to play our best players and right now as much as I respect what Murphy has done to carve himself out a role, I don't think he's in that group. And if we need to shuffle Berry into a role that's more focused on F50 pressure whilst still getting his time through the middle, i'd prefer to do that!

That midfield is getting more full with Pedlar, Hatley and Crouch coming back from injury over the first half of the year. No way he starts playing that many minutes in the guts in 2021 with that many horses in the stable. 2022 for sure, but not this season.

I want him in the team, so getting him a full time role outside of his midfield stints is the best way to keep him in the side IMO. And i'd much rather see him in the team then Murphy (sorry Lachie).

I wouldn't write Berry off there. We haven't been shy with throwing him in the midfield when the game is on the line so far in his burgeoning career. Especially with Pedlar likely to have a low-key 2021 (fair enough too, he's had a lot of injury problems in the past couple of years), Crouch out for a while, and Hately needs a few weeks in the SANFL to sort out some issues before we can get him in just to find his inside game, seeing he struggled to get involved at the coalface on the weekend.

Berry is in no danger of losing his spot at the moment, providing his form stays up, and we seem hot enough on him that he'll get prioritised for midfield minutes.

Jones looks like he's been ruined by expectation.
I've wondered a lot about Jones who has shown flashes of a very good player. You could be right ie the pressure of expectation has made him try too hard.

I suspect he's just not happy, either from being played out of position, and/or being in and out of the side, or even more simply does not like the Adelaide fishbowl.
Then again, there's this:
" ... Nicks highlighting [Jones'] leadership ability.
"He's super diligent as far as understanding the gameplan (and) an elite runner, right up in the top echelon as far as our runners go," Nicks said.
"So without putting too much pressure on another player, we really like what Chayce has been able to do this pre-season and hopefully he's taken some confidence out of working hard over the break and we see that early in the year." "

Hopefully there will be a midfield queue... but at the moment we don't have any SANFL mids putting pressure on the AFL team.

Hopefully, someone like Hately or Pedlar will by the time we need to manage Berry.

I heard that said the other night in footy classified. I don't think he deserves any credit, he left the list in a bad state.
I don’t think that is his fault. He advocated for a significant rebuild to the board (3 top 30 picks for three years...I think was his pitch) who then rejected that.

I think Berry looked really good when playing across the HFF last week. For me there's no reason why he can't permanently move into that Lachlan Murphy pressure role (along with his stints in the midfield).

Has the height on Murphy, plus good hands and a really solid leap which will all put him in good stead to play more up front. Plus in the first 3 games and the trials he consistently seems to get shots on goal, needs to slot them more, but he's definitely proven to be a natural scorer.
Something will need to be done in regards to murphy sooner or later..

he seems to be another “darling of the club” types, maybe due to the great story of how he ended up on an AFL list..

but for a small forward he simply doesnt hit the scoreboard enough. We’ve now played 3 games this season and won two yet Murph has only kicked 1 goal.. thats just not acceptable for a player of his age and with nearly 50 games under his belt..

Rowe has only played 3 afl games and kicked 4!..

I would like to see Worrell debut and think it likely. Other possible is Fog, but if one change I think it will be Worrell.

I hope you're right. I'd like to see him debut after his exceptional SANFL game last weekend. Apart from the fact that he will make us a better side (hopefully), it would be good for our kids to see that this sort of effort is rewarded.

Murphy cops a lot on here there have been times I understand the frustration
Right now I think our fwd line is balanced
Be patient
For once I am actually comfortable in selection in this area . Including Frampton. People forget Berg did a good block in 2019 and was gassed out
It’s not all about 2020 for him
2021 wouldn’t thus far give him any consideration
The only one I am concerned about is FOG we must play him

For starters Murphy has been playing much higher forward this season than in the past and he's also been attending stoppages intermitently and has been getting significant clearances in several of those games. I won't be at all surprised given he's had an impact in that role thus far we start to see him more in some on ball minutes. He was actually a very good on baller at the Northern Knights before he headed over to Adelaide.

11, 12 and 10 disposals. It's not enough if he's now considered a higher up the ground player. Riley knight posted similar numbers and got delisted.

Balance is outweighed by usefulness, isn't it?
Frampton was Worst-on-Ground last week by any measure. His usefulness/nett effect was zero. Second bad game in a row.
Elevating Thilthorpe might produce more that Frampton and expose him to AFL vs. not-especially-strong opponents, both of which are wins. If he plays as badly as Frampton did, no damage has been done.
Retaining seriously underperforming players affects negatively team morale, especially that of players being held out.

Nicks has talked the talk. It's time for him to walk the walk, drop Frampton, and bring in Thilthorpe and Worrell (if Lynch is injured).

This is probably why Chayce Jones was not listed in the SANFL team released last night

100% this. I’ve been as critical of Murphy as anyone but this year he’s definitely got a new role and he’s playing it very well. Not getting huge numbers but generally they’re high impact and his support around the contest in critical moments has been good.

So much better than the bombing to him in the F50 and him going hero mode trying to create.
