Cordy was listed as a 2-4 week injury, so it's unlikely he's back in this week. Only way Gardner is dropped is if Bevo decides to play Trengove, so in other words it won't happen

I am not a fan of Gardner or Smith unfortunately I think the win just patches over selection issues. Gardner it was hard to know who he was lined up against as they were moving around and poor, but his stats show, 3 kicks, 3 hand balls, 2 marks and 17 mts gained, 98% game time. One of his kicks should have been a turn over goal and he dropped a mark late which cost a goal. He will play again but as soon as he plays someone decent will get found out and so will the team.

I still struggle to see why they didn't pick an extra tall forward also, Dunkley in the ruck is not going to cut it against good teams so again just wall papering over an issue they had. If Bruce is out and you want to play English fwd then why not play Sweet at the expense of Cavarra or Smith. I mean English wasn't even taking the ruck duties when he was played forward. Naughton had one out of the bag and clearly going to be a gun but against good team defences it won't be that easy.

Ball still too easy out of the forward line too, the coast to coast goals a worry. Haven't seen enough of Melbourne and their forward line to know how many tall defenders they need.

Out - Eng (inj), Cavarra, Smith, Lloyd (I hope Gardner)
In - Sweet, Bruce, Vandermer, Dickson (Young if Gardner out)

Gardner wasn't great but he was far from terrible. He went at 83% and 100% by hand, 0 turnovers, 4 spoils and 1 intercept mark.

As for his matchups...

Note that goal from Taylor Walker was from a free kick against Dunkley even though Gardner was his matchup.

Naughton would benefit from another tall forward. But is that Bruce? Naughton needs to be the deep target, but I can’t see Bruce playing up the ground. Schache looks better as that mobile roaming tall forward. I think Bruce’s natural game will impede Naughton. Interesting selection this week, but then again, isn’t it every week with us?!

If Crozier is ready he should come straight back in but I have a feeling he’s another week away. Sounded like Cordy’s injury was not a one weeker. Also presuming there is no injuries from today.

Ins:

Bruce - Worked today but can’t see the one tall forward and one ruck being a successful strategy. Would prefer another ruck option but don’t have that on the list (Tom Boyd would be handy right now), so the forward will do. Don’t mind if it’s Schache instead of Bruce but he’s had a few niggles recently and probably should return through the seconds.

Johannisen - One week injury, contrary to a lot it seems but I think he’s had a good year and should come straight in.

Vandermeer - Been good this year and should return

Out:

Lloyd - Hasn’t had a great season and think he’s behind Wallis and Dale in the pecking order now. Bruce improves the structure.

R. Smith - Wasn’t bad but someone misses for JJ and it shouldn’t be Richards.

West - Would like to see him getting more games and don’t want to drop him but at the moment I think there are only two spots between West, Cavarra and VDM and I think he’ll be the one to miss.

Team:

B: Williams - Keath - Wood
HB: Daniel - Gardner - Johannisen

R: English - Dunkley - Bontempelli
C: B. Smith - Macrae - Hunter

HF: Vandermeer - Bruce - Cavarra
F: Wallis - Naughton - Dale

I: Richards - Liberatore - Lipinski - McLean

Still have question marks on some guys. Would still prefer Trengove and/or Young to Gardner but he was decent enough today and I can’t see that change happening.

In: JJ, Laith VDM, Bruce.
Out: Lloyd, Roarke, West.

Sweet for English if he doesn't get up.

You'd have to think this is pretty close although i thought West's ferocious tackling would be hard to ignore for the match committee. Cavarra might have him covered though. Roarke Smith did some nice things too. Lloyd has lost me a bit though. He's just a shadow of himself compared to 2019.
Lipinksi the other one probably on thin ice, not so much for this game but overall inconsistency week to week. English's injury recovery will need to also take into account whether he needs a break. I'm thinking its now or never.

Out: Lloyd, English(inj), Roarke Smith, Lipinski
In: JJ, Bruce, Trengove, Vandermeer

B: Wood Keath Daniel
HB: Williams Gardner Johanissen
C: Vandermeer Bont Hunter
HF: Dale Bruce Mclean
F: Wallis Naughton Cavarra
FOL: Trengove, B.Smith, Liberatore
INT: Dunkley, West, Vandermeer, Richards

All of Suckling, Crozier and Duryea are outside chances of playing. Schache should be fit after various injuries with JJ. Vandermeer and Bruce should be fit after being managed.

That's 6 players that could be variously considered "best 22" or nearly so.

Vandermeer takes' West's spot. JJ probably takes R. Smith's. How we fit Bruce in the team an interesting question.

No way Duryea comes straight in. Will need a few scratch matches to get his touch and match fitness. No need to rush him given we are okay for med defenders. Aim for 2-3 for him by season's end imo.

100% he takes Lloyd's spot. No question about it IMO

I really think we are better with Naughton solo. They were both competing for the same deep ball when they were in the side. Either Bruce needs to get on his bike and be the lead up style/get out kick up this wing or the system wont work. Give me Naughtons paddock inside 50 with Cavarra, Dale and Wallis at this feet

I don't think we've seen enough yet to make a judgement one way or another about Bruce and Naughton in same forward line.

In: VDM Out: Lloyd
In: Trengove Out: Gardner (we can't play a first game ruck against Max G, without cover)
In: Sweet Out: English (it didn't look great)
In: JJ Out: R.Smith
We have to have a second ruck option this week, Melbourne's mids are too good to give armchair service to? I think English stays in, he was used sparingly yesterday, had an 8 day break last week and another good break this week. It comes down to Trengove or Sweet one would think?

Have to play both imo, good sides aren't going to let Naughts run and jump so freely and Bruce will be a good foil for him just wait and see :)

Sam Lloyd would be one of the most selfish players I have seen. Hardly ever gives it to some in a position, nearly always takes the impossible shot and is always hanging around for the easy handball for a goal.

And that’s why you can’t rely on the stats sheet to judge performance.

The zero turnovers is only by the grace of god. His kick to Wood was one of great risk and little reward. I’d be uncomfortable having Daniel taking those chances, never mind someone with a fraction of his ability.

The other kick I50 not counted as a ‘turnover’ was much worse and should have resulted in a goal against.
