...

The idea that anyone outside this forum will remember him less fondly than Jay Schulz is wishful thinking.

I get there is a lot of nuffies out there, but...

Schulz was courageous and fearless beyond reason, took dozens of hangers, suffered and came back from multiple freak injuries, was a super reliable set shot kick, one of the few shinning consistent lights in the Primus years, has kicked equal high Port goals in a game the AFL with Tredders, and finished runner up in a coleman medal, only losing to... Buddy Franklin, the modern goat.

The idea that nobody outside of bigfooty will rate him above Dixon is ludicrous.

If Jay was a worse shot on goal, maybe we would've moved away from leading to the boundary line and wide shots as our default forward entry...
Yeah I've said this before that Schulz and Wingard being so skilled REALY put lipstick on Hinkley's pig of a gameplan in those early seasons.

Let’s just kick a dog while it’s down like we did with Jonas last year. I can’t flipping stand the bs in this thread.

His body is failing him, he is most likely finished but can’t we show him a bit of respect on the way out?

I personally don’t hold any grudges against him for sticking up for his coach like others do. And as far as I’m concerned he has played his role asked of him to the 100% of his effort, ability and body limitations. For that, I respect him and appreciate the service he has given the club.

like Jonas, Dixon was done at least a year ago and its an absolute coaching failure that everyone else can see it but for some reason it takes a good 12 months for the coach to see it. Like Jonas he should never have played the 15 or so games. I have little or no respect for any player who allow Ken Hinkley or enabled him to turn this club into the vanilla piece of garbage it is now.....By the way the cherry on top was when the club decided to chair Jonas off after the GWS final last year guess who was too gutless to show his face on the ground near the supporters while this was going on? Fancy not showing up for a captains final farewell

Correct. We let Westhoff hang up the boots midway through the season. He was down on form but he could have been handy in the finals.
Westhoff won the BnF in 2018. He retired in 2020.

He played 14 of 17 games that year. So not really midway through the season.
Being dropped on form at the end of that game, and couldn't get back into the side. Having no access to SANFL games for form wouldn't have helped.

As for his comments defending the coach - i'm not too bothered by that. If it's read in context, he's clearly directing it to a specific group of people. It's not like he's gone out and called every Port supporter stupid.
Yes but he's directed it to a specific group that actually have a very valid point, have a right to that opinion, have been proven correct, and pay his wages. Its disrespectful to say it to anyone.

He played 4 games before he was dropped. Then came back in due to an injury to McKenzie for one week, and then dropped again. McKenzie was injured again and so Jonas came back in.

I don't think he was ever really in the best 22 last season aside from the first 4 games, and then came in as we had no cover (Clurey out all season)

yes that (you could also probably put Wines in his first 50 games), combined with the spirit of Port Adelaide's reinvigoration surging through the players at the time, got us over the line in more than a few games.

This discussion is a little esoteric. Dixon will be remembered as a good player but not a great player. He will be remembered as a warrior but one who played in a poor team.

The idea that anyone outside this forum will remember him less fondly than Jay Schulz is wishful thinking.

I fundamentally disagree. People remember how they felt. Schulz was our full forward during our resurgence, Dixon was our full forward during a time where a lot of supporters lost passion for the club.

This board obviously feels this much more deeply than the general supporterbase but it's definitely felt more widely as well.

mate, he was selected by the coach as captain at the start of the season, he was already cooked then and then to say we are selecting a player as captain who we know isnt in the best 22 is just mind boggling. Talk about a coaching catastrophe, up there with the allir/jones debacle and selecting rozee injured, they all have the fingerprints of Ken of them.

Not sure old mate TJ played only 1 season too long as I have a memory of him having his pants pulled down when he was dropped to the Maggies some years earlier, including in a game at Alberton by an ex norf melbourne magoos forward playing for WWT who was so over weight he looked like he was about 5 months pregnant.

Ok so Charlie Dixon has achieved less than stickerman at this club because he wasn't part of a team that won a flag?
Well neither have achieved anything.

I'd argue that when you consider our biggest obstacle to achieving anything, stickerman has actively tried to help remove it, Dixon has actively tried to help keep it.

pretty nuffy to completely disregard Dixon's career because he said something that offended a few supporters too.

I have Schulz and Dixon on about par.
