News Charlie Dixon signs for West Broken Hill

Not the biggest fan of another year, if he's a backup option to develop Lord/MG then I'm ok with it.

Is he the oldest forward we've ever had on our list? He'll be 33 this month.

Consider Tredders did his knee back in 2010 against the Bombers when he was 32.

When Kornes retired he was 33 I believe, but facing an inevitable fight against father time.

How's the longevity?

Next season?
If that was so surely he would have announced his retirement. Not sure even our club would sign a player on a new contract for next season knowing he was never going to play.

Has to be the remainder of this season.

He’s not our future, likely liability for next season.
He's not our future, but given we have a genuine shot at the premiership this year and no reason why we couldn't next year, we need to have focus on the immediate term.

If fit, Dixon is miles better than Lord at the moment, and the only KPF we have who is even remotely capable of sticking a contest mark.

In his last 4 games, Lord has had a small impact in the first quarter and then almost completely disappeared. His stats across the last 3 quarters in his last 4 games are: 14 touches, 3 marks, 1.1. That's 12 quarters of football for 3 marks and 1 goal.

Against the Giants he did not register a single stat in the last 3 quarters despite having 83% TOG and it being a big win for us. You can like his "potential" all you want, but he's not up to scratch for finals footy.

Like always half the problem with Dixon is our idiot coaches 'bomb on his head, he's there to bring it to ground, not kick goals!'. Though even that wouldn't be awful, if it was just one of many options when he's out there, instead of the default. Put Dixon away 25-30m out, not directly in front and let him have two or three hanging off him, then target other players. If the opposition shifts to only one on him, then target him. He's concrete hands at times (especially at night), but we are so dumb in how he's used.

This is why like so many players misused before him by Hinkley, if Hinkley is still here, then we're better off with him not being. The last 2 years, IMO, our forward line has looked more dangerous without him, as we don't go back to bomb it on him, at all chances. It SHOULD be better with him, then without, but it's not. Ideally Dixon back week 2 or 3 of finals, instead of Lord, used as just one target up forward, and chop out (or main ruck if we go with spud Lycett and he bombs yet AGAIN in finals) would be great. It wouldn't work that way though.

Man, I get the negativity on this board around a lot of Port things for the last however many years, I'm guilty of it myself with regards to the coach...

But the negativity surrounding Charlie is a bit over the top. This dude has destroyed his body over the years for our club, played hurt more than anyone, throwing himself into the ruck when needed and people are complaining the he earned himself a one-year deal as if this is the catalyst for our downfall.

Maybe pump the brakes and appreciate him just a little bit. He started the year with 9 goals in the first 3 games and it's unfortunate his body hasn't held up the way he and we'd hoped. I ain't giving up on him playing a role for us this year in the Finals and hopefully coming back stronger next year.

I think it's time to acknowledge Dixon isn't fit to polish ted's Klan hood

He's kicked more than half of big dix entire career tally in the last 3 years lol
His resurgence is impossible to logically explain, but you can bet his numbers would be significantly less in our system, and also playing for a team that isn't spoon contention and gets more respect from opposition.

Dixon doesn't know it but he's arguably the greatest victim of our system. He'd have kicked 100+ more career goals and arguably another AA guernsey or two if he'd gone anywhere else.

He plays the role he's told to and puts his body on the line week in week out. He's best 22 on one leg. He doesn't deserve the hate gets on this board.

He does, a bit.

Still issues with concrete hands, those times you can see he has opted to wrestle rather than time a lead, not using his size and strength better, and the things he's said about the fans/supporting a coach that's sabotaged his career.

He hasn't had issues with concrete hands for a long time. Currently averaging 2.7 contested marks a game.

yep just that little bit slower these days so not running under the ball with the hands up like he sometimes used to. funny how you adapt to your limitations

It's possible he's complicit.

We tend not to bomb it to Marshall and Finlayson and Georgiades in the way we bomb it to Dixon. We tended not to bomb it to Schulz in the way we bomb it to Dixon.

Dixon's not a great lead. Even after he took steps to address the problems with his vision, Dixon running himself under the ball hasn't an uncommon sight. Maybe he lacks a certain amount of confidence in his ankles? Maybe playing banged up all the time means his ankles or knees or whatever else just aren't up to repeated long runs and jumps at the ball even if his vision is/was?

He's big enough and strong enough and a good enough kick at goal that he demands attention from the opposition defence, but it's possible that we bomb it to him because he generally at least breaks even and that's more predictable/reliable/successful for our smalls than him botching leads or breaking down.

I think it's 100% this. He doesn't always marked it but he almost never gets outmarked.

Hinkley would rather a loose ground ball in our forward 50 than the risk of an intercept mark.

"I've had a few fans come up to me that I really appreciate and respect how much guys hate losing which is awesome" - Steven May

Meanwhile this bonehead doesn't appreciate our 2 cents and considers us white noise

Dixon would have been a different player in a side coached to deliver the ball properly. At this stage he will probably go around one last time in 2024. He isn't our future but I am not 100% sold on Ollie Lord as a replacement. Ollie needs to take more marks and kick a few more goals to convince me that we have a ready made replacement for Charlie.

I don't want a Charlie Dixon replacement.

I think having a FF that big makes it hard to balance the forward/ruck situation.

Id rather a more mobile FF and a forward pocket who we can genuinely 2nd ruck (as in actually compete for the taps without losing our whole forward structure.

I want a KPF who delivers when the heat is on so I agree I don’t want a Dixon replacement either

I want Charlie Dixon gone from the PAFC as soon as possible. I don’t buy that he’s been good for us at all. It may have had a lot to do with the way we used him, but he’s been a B-grade big forward his entire career, except for one AA year, and even then he couldn’t deliver enough to get us over the line in a prelim final.
