As one of his biggest defenders back in his day, if we were to delist him I wouldn’t even be sad. Really pissed me off with some of his comments to the fans who pay his wages and is bordering on being a complete liability these days. I would quite literally groan when I saw him selected last season.

If his foot is still a problem he is most definitely not in this side's best team. Marshall is this team's #1 forward and Lord really showed himself to be a hulking KPF with significant potential last year. Dixon shouldn't be the reason Georgiades is moved out of the forward line either - he's as natural a KPF as this team has drafted in many years. And then Finlayson is a wildcard given his wife's health issues - personally speaking if he's not in the right head space he shouldn't be putting his hand up to play - doing so only lets the team down.

It's a long now but I'm thinking all that rucking in 2022 probably cooked him a year or two earlier than otherwise.

He's 33, injury plagued for many many years. Broken foot in August. Selfish decision by Hinkley and Dixon to play on.

I agree that putting him in the ruck ruined him and our chances. It is an indictment on the coaches that we did not address the ruck situation years ago when we all knew that Lycett was ordinary and injury prone.
He was fine last year until he injured his PCL against the Western Bulldogs. The other injuries have come from playing him through that injury.

He doesn't need to be directly injured while rucking. The wear and tear on the body meant that when he did behind to break down, it was a quicker descent.

If we only had another ruck on our list who could've filled in instead of sacrificing Dixon's longevity in pursuit of a Hinkley contract extension.
Dixon, along with McKenzie, Clurey and Boak are the oldest 4 on the list.
Clurey hasn't played for a while and Dixon and McKenzie have been injured for a while.
Boak, well, he should have to earn his spot.
We need to move on from these 4 with Boak playing a role but with opportunities given to younger players as well.

Boak as a role player could be of value, but the other 3 should probably spend a fair bit of 2024 playing for the Maggies, and if that does happen with Chuck I can see him pulling the pin mid season.
He only missed 1 game 2020 and 2021 and has played 12 and 14 the last 2. He was playing pretty good up until the knee blew up last year.
Selfish? I'm not sure, it's one year on minimum chips and Lord isn't quite ready yet for mine and Georgiades is coming back from an ACL. 1 year seemed like the right call to me, and i've got no idea why anyone is surprised he isn't burning up the track right now when he literally only broke his foot 6 months ago.
If he is selfish the same could be said for when we took Francou and Primus into 2005, Wanganeen into 2006, Wilson into 2008, Carr into 2010, Cassisi into 2014, Cornes into 2015, Schulz & Carlile into 2016, Monfries into 2017, (we recruited Jack Trengove and Lindsay Thomas for 2018 FFS), Watts into 2020, Rockliff and Hartlett into 2021, & Jonas and Lycett into 2023. And there are probably more that i've missed, but all these guys were banged up too but we gave them one more year. Dixon is probably less banged up and more of a chance to play more games in his final year than many of these others mentioned, in a key position too.
Mckenzie, Boak and Clurey all lucky to get one more year too. Not sure why we are singling out Dixon so much.
There is probably an element of giving a long serving team member a chance to get their body right and a opportunity to have one last crack, i don't think that is a bad thing.
I'd say there's a good chance only Boak makes the round 1 team. But I doubt he plays every game, so there will likely be some games this season with none of them playing.
Hard to see Dixon there if he's still struggling mid-February.
The gold passes have been a problem in the Ken era, but to be fair, he's been willing to eventually move out older players not performing in recent seasons. Although they do get a chance to renew their pass first, so once Dixon is remotely match fit, I'd expect him to come in.

You make a solid point, and maybe there’s a touch of pre-existing dislike for Dixon that prompted my post. But I have to ask, did keeping on those players you mentioned risk stifling the development of any important young players in the same way keeping Dixon on might?
I have to ask this because I’m 21 so I was either far too young or not footy-smart enough yet to actually have an opinion on the matter, but from Monfries onwards I think Lycett was the only one clogging up a spot, not that we had anyone properly ready to go as a first ruck.
Dixon has a little bit of a gold pass it would seem, and his inclusion makes our forward line far more dysfunctional and predictable for opposition defences, I think that him being on the list will result in him getting a game every week that he’s fit, and that would be a mistake with Georgiades coming back from injury and Lord being on the radar of Geelong.
We need games into Lord, he's part of our future, Dixon doesn't understand what is required out of a man of his size and experience, he also slams the supporters, something real Port players don't do.

A few people have mentioned it but Boak could fit the wing role.
He's got the endurance and they are quasi-midfielders anyway.
He would also is good going against a winder one on one.
He also wouldn't be playing against the game's best in the centre.

I guess we will see how it plays out this year but up until this point I don’t think playing Dixon has stifled the development of any of our forwards. There has always been room for georgiades and Marshall in the same side as Dixon. The addition of finlayson and the emergence of lord would’ve created more headaches if it wasn’t for the fact that at any point in time in the last couple years it seems at least 1 or 2 of our KPF’s were injured. So Dixon has definitely been worthy of his spot in the games he’s played, but there were some games last year he did look too injured to be playing and probably wouldn’t have played if georgiades was available.
I think lord is nearly ready but not quite but worth getting games into and Dixon has question marks over his body so they could share the load this year. With Marshall and georgiades first picked for me and finlayson too if he gets back to the form of the front half of 2023.

Keeping one hundred year old forwards who were never that much good to begin with AND were finished over a year ago is the way to premierships, i'm certain.
He's also garnered 3 All-Australians during that time.
He's not an awful kick at all. I don't know what you're on about.
His clutch kicking is not good at all. No doubt but wings don't kick a lot of goals nowadays.
I don't really want him in the team because the young players are taking over but he has value. We just have to find it.

Players that don’t execute under pressure are not great players, they’re average players.
He’s grafted a career which is good at best and good luck to him. A more ruthless club and coach may have decided he could be better suited at another club.

Should be delisted mid season and draft the best key forward/defender out of a state league and give them a few months in the SANFL with us.

First half of the season he really should only play 4 games, impactful players you want fit and firing in the last half of the year as you push towards finals, not burning them out by midseason, that's when the youth are developed and given an opportunity.
