The villagers had found themselves trapped in a nightmarish web of uncertainty, unable to discern friend from foe. As they descended on the town square to make sense of the day's activities, fear and desperation hung heavy in the air. Everyone knew that they had to get this one right, as they'd lost so many of their friends and neighbours over the past days. A suggestion from the crowd was to put two nooses on the gallows that had become a semi-permanent fixture. Surely that would increase their odds of ridding the village of their tormentors.

As the sun sunk below the horizon, casting long shadows over the village, they finally realised what they had done ...
