ex afl player, still young and won the qafl goal kicking this year and plays for southport where the suns are based. suns are in need of a key forward and is a much better player than nablett who did nothing in qafl and vfl haha.

Anyone think we should pick him up? would be cheap also.

I would stay away! Whilst on the Richmond list, the big Cleveland Steamer, showed lots of talent in the VFL, however, could not stick games together. He was exposed as a one trick pony, who can only lead, mark, kick. As a comparison, I would say he is close to a Ben McKinley (WCE), yet, got delisted from Richmond.

Also, need to take into account, whilst on the Richmond list, he was rumoured to have been suffering from depression and am unsure whether he has fully recovered. In this sense, it might be good to help him through the tough times being back on an AFL list...

Had the potential and looked like staking a claim as a genuine AFL player until he found himself right next to Polak when he was hit by the tram, which set off his depression. He was never the same after than and fell off dramatically - from kicking 6 goals in an AFL game after long periods of good form at VFL level, to struggling to make an impact at VFL reserves level.

No, no, no, NO! Hell NO!

He failed at AFL level, he showed during his time with Richmond that he struggled, he would be the worst pick-up we could do, Nathan Ablett might not be great but he is way better than Hughes, hell if we signed up Hughes he'd no doubt struggle like he did with Richmond.

Schulz at Port is a good example of a decent forward playing at Richmond and failing, then getting to a good club in Port and excelling. I wouldnt take to much into form at Richmond. For those that dont know they are they joke of the comp. Rarely play finals, last time they were remotely a force in the VFL was 1980.

To perform forwards need a good midfield. Ours is already better than Richmonds.
Gaz made Mooney look good, could do the same with him.
One thing we need is a decent forward, would be worth a punt.

Steamer is soft as butter unfortunately. He's mostly a lead, mark, kick forward. Offers no defensive pressure at all. If he's keen to have a crack and you give him good delivery then he'd be a decent full forward. Great kick at goal.

Personally I wouldn't go near him.

Jeez, get out of your goldfish bowls :) !

How much forward-defence do you think Browny and Fev were capable of this year at Lions? Browny did alot more of the lead-mark-kick goal stuff than fat Fev who specialised in soccer grubbers mostly. Yet Browny was only dropped due to the "öh-so obvious" injury and Fev paid a motza.

The Lions, BTW, are attempting to re-habilitate Fev after his alcohol and gambling addiction disclosures, pantsing himself at both the Brownlows and a certain swimwear model's, and subsequently losing his wife and three lovely children.

Stack that all up against Cleavage Hughes suffering depression from seeing Polak pole-axed by a tram, and we are being just a wee bit precious. You have to remember that players can shrink or flourish at clubs depending on the culture there, the coach, the age of the player. Give Cleavage a go! Its a time honoured GC thing to do.

I don't remember great FFs of the past being dumped for lack of 'forward-defence' . Hell, Lions had Lynchy keeping the 'shape of the team together' according to Lethal, even though he could hardly LEAD/Mark/Kick goals by the time he finished. Still, 3-Peat happenend.

Its very un-GC not to adopt Cleavage. He'll help keep the 'shape of the team', and he can LEAD/MARK/Kick goals.
N Ablett will be ok in a forward pocket, maybe. He's no FF.

Schultz spent time in the SANFL this year as well, even after Tredrea was out if memory serves but to his credit came back and finished the year well. Pretty sure he won Port's goal kicking as well.

I'll put it this way...Hughes is shit. He is a pussy that refuses to put his head over it.

Until that changes he's going nowhere. real shame because he's got a nice pair of hands and is a great kick at goal.

Hughes had his issues, but his biggest was playing for Richmond. I think he's had the time to mature, and still has a lot to offer at AFL level. Personally, I think it's well worth whatever small risk there is to draft him. - Could be a real masterstroke if it pays off.

The guy has talent, and could work out.

He had 2 problems..
1) Didn't work hard enough....It wasn't THAT bad, and he probably would have been OK if that was his only problem, but regardless, being delisted and getting a second chance could be the kick up the bum he needed.

2) Seeing Polak get hit by the tram messed up his head ( depression mostly ). Time *might* have helped with this, especially if he's been getting help.

So I'd say he's worth checking out and *IF* these problems look resolvable, take him with a late pick.
