2. What does Ken Hinkley need to do to earn a contract extension?

Only the Power hierarchy is able to know for sure.

Hinkley enters the last year of his contract under as much pressure as any coach in the competition.

If he misses the finals, he is surely gone.

But what about if the Power makes it and loses in the first week?

How about a semi-final exit or a prelim?

Grand final or bust is unreasonable, but the mood for change will be high unless the team returns to the premiership mix.

Noisy sections among the Power’s supporters suggest it already is.

Only a flag will satisfy them.

Collingwood showed this year under Craig McRae how a new coach can rejuvenate a list.

Port Adelaide made a wise decision to back Hinkley in for 2023 amid external calls for his sacking.

Hinkley also stayed loyal as interstate job opportunities arose.

lol, we made the only decision we could afford. There is no objective measure that could determine it is wise after taking a premiership favourite to a 2-9 record against the top 8 and a 0-5 start followed by a 1-5 finish.

Hinkley also stayed loyal as interstate job opportunities arose.

Imagine a world where you don't have to actually be decent at your job, for threat of dismissal, because just hanging around is enough. What a life.

I might just stop performing my role and just let my boss know I could've gone somewhere else, and maybe then I'll get away with doing nothing.

Tom Delonge Wtf GIF

"Loyal"

The only club that came after him has been the worst club in the league over the last decade by some distance.

The club he's at pays and resources him handsomely with zero expectation that he'll perform whatsoever.

He's loyal in the same way that people in government jobs are loyal. Decent pay, excellent job security, you can be a total spud and nobody cares.

Even if someone did come after him he knows he's more chance of lasting longer here, he has a talented list that will probably bounce back to a degree that gets him an extension as opposed to going to ground zero somewhere with a board that will lop him early if it goes to fertiliser.

The author of this article deserves public ridicule. Put him in the stocks

'expecting a grand final would be unreasonable'

What the *? It was expected THIS year and he failed dismally. You don't get to fail your performance targets and then just get your performance targets revised downwards for being s**t at your job.
Hinkley does, that's how he won coach of the year in 2020. 'But he exceeded expectations!' Yes, but expectations were only so low because of how shit he'd been the last 5 years.

Yay for stability and mediocrity.......

Maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy but the constant lowering of expectations and standards just annoys me.
By no means or measures were any of our teams "successful" this year.
I didn't really see anything that reflected any great drive for 'greatness"
I guess if you set low expectations then it lessens any disappointment......

16 wins in total across 3 competitions! that's on average 5.33333333 wins per competition! we are a lucky group
Only if you are judging it on wins not length like a madman.

Longest season ever, most games ever. That's the important thing!

Just don't mention the length of tenure of the Maggies coaches.

"The frustration within sections of the supporter base while a team that qualified for consecutive AFL preliminary finals in 2020 and 2021 to become an also-ran in 2022 is understandable - and to be expected at a club that exists to win premierships.

The hope demanded for this anxious membership certainly was delivered in the recent AFL trade period with the arrival at Alberton of 2021 No. 1 draftee Jason Horne-Francis from North Melbourne and livewire forward Junior Rioli from West Coast after the squad lost Gray and Steven Motlop to retirement."

Thanks for telling me that my hope has been delivered Rucc, but whilst JHF is a great addition for the longer term future that hope you're talking about is still very much on hold for me... It doesn't matter who the soldiers are when the General drawing up the battle plans has no idea how to win when it matters... While I hope for a premiership every year, until we get a tactically competent coach my expectations for a premiership will be very much tempered
