Coke Versus Beer

When I go out with co-workers on a Friday night, we often go to a bar. I normally drink Coke there because I am worried about alcohol's effects on my health.

I know that Coke is not healthy because of all the sugar in it, but I figure that it's the least of many evils.

However, I have been reading The Health Benefits of Beer. It claims that beer in moderation is actually good for you and can reduce the risk of stroke.

Is this sufficient evidence, do you think, for me to switch from Coke to some sort of beer?

I have never tried alcohol before so should I try it now for the sake of health?
 
Beer has a lot of sugar content in it as well, but you're right. Moderate consumption of certain drinks (including beer) can prevent some diseases and help you live longer. Beers with a really good quality malt in it are meant to be the best.

The problem with coke is no one really knows exactly what the sh1t is. I actually find that if I drink coke quite often I begin to love the taste of it and want more of it. But if I haven't had any coke in a few weeks then have a glass, I can't stand the smell or taste of it.
Probably something in it that affects your brain somewhere. The fact that it can dissolve stainless steel nails is a scary thought.
 
The health benefits of alcohol are a bit overstated, methinks.

Personally, I'm tired of nutritionists needing to come up with a supposed healthy reason for everything. Shouldn't the fact it tastes good and gives you a bit of a buzz be enough? Enjoy it, don't overdo it, and relax.

If you want to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack etc, the significance of alcohol consumption is so tiny when compared to a lot of other factors. It's just pumped up so greatly because of the nature of our society.

Alcohol will target your liver first and foremost.

Coke will target your blood sugar first and foremost.

- Both in moderation.

It's not the actual alcohol that they talk about in regards to the health benefits, it's the ingredients used in the drink, but like you said, anything in moderation is fine.

A couple of weeks ago we had a big BBQ and instead of drinking beer I drank Coke. Basically I matched mates can for can all afternoon and into the evening. I rarely drink soft drink, so the results of this experiment may be slightly skewed.

One mate consumed 15 cans of VB, so I also consumed 15 cans of Coke. F*** me it was difficult to down that many cans of fizzy syrup. What started out as a simple experiment ended up being a weird form of masochism.

Combination of the sugar and caffeine meant I went to bed completely wired and barely slept a wink. The next morning I was not only tired but felt hungover. Had a throbbing headache and generally felt nauseous until about lunchtime.

The big surprise was the following morning (ie Monday) as I woke with a throbbing headache then too. Missus reckons it was a mild case of caffeine detox, due to the ridiculous amount I had consumed on Saturday.

Never again... I'll stick to a few beers and a couple of glasses of wine next BBQ.
 
Similar thing happened to me Likka, where I had gone out on the Friday night, drank beer... hungover and didnt want to see a beer on Saturday night, but had engagements so I drank 8-10 glasses of Coke. Had no chance of sleeping and woke up, not so much with a headache, but with this weird fizzy feeling in my mouth all day... It was a crazy feeling that has sorta turned me off Coke a bit ever since

Most hangovers are caused by dehydration. That amount of Coke would dehydrate you as much as the beer, if not more. Not to mention the caffeine altering your sleep.
 
Coke. I drink way too much of the stuff ~ 2L a day. I know no teeth Sugar Diabetes etc, but ive drank the stuff almost every day for so long that If I don't drink it, I feel tired and cranky. Ive also drank so much that the caffeine doesn't have as profound an effect..

Beer on the other hand. The first 5 or so are Masochistic to swallow to say the least. For my alcohol, I prefer Spirits and my long time friend Coca Cola.

A large body of evidence consistently shows that consumption of alcoholic drinks is a risk factor for cancer. Drinking alcohol increases the risk of cancers of the mouth, throat (larynx and pharynx), oesophagus, bowel (colon and rectum), liver and female breast.

It is not just heavy drinking that increases cancer risk. Even drinking small amounts of alcohol increases the risk of these cancers, but the more you drink, the greater the risk.

Despite some evidence that drinking regular, small amounts of alcohol (e.g. red wine) may reduce heart disease in older adults, there is no evidence that alcohol helps protect you from any type of cancer.

In other words, alcohol (even in moderation) increases the risk you get cancer! This seems to contradicts the Askmen article I posted early, so now I don't know what to do.

^What the Cancer Council of Victoria said is right, and further more, they use appropriate resources and tell it like it is.

There is no actual proof that coke dehydrates at a noticable level(some athletes use it as a sports drink), certainly no where near the level that alcohol does. I'd say the hangover effects were a combination of high sugar levels, lack of sleep and definately caffeine withdrawal.

can it dehydrate you if you are not use to drinking fifteen cans in a night? (see likka's post)

Crikey that's a lot of coke!

I was a huge consumer of alcohol aged 18-23 but these days all i drink is low fat milk (full cream for tea,milo etc) and perhaps a few 1.25 lt bottles of coke/pepsi/sars a fortnight in summer & virtually none in winter. I saw somewhere that trim milk is the healthiest of drinks even more then OJ because of the sugar content.

If out why just beer or coke? Try a lemon squash or something healthy.

Yeah I've been drinking coke daily since I was about 13 or 6 years ago, but until the last year or two, it was usually only a 600ml bottle a day. But since I started work in 2007, my coke consumption has gradually gone up to the point where it is now.
