That Hawks team had a mantra of no contract starting with a number higher than 7. With salary cap increases, that number 7 has probably gone up - but it's the type of policy I'd like to see him bring across to the Pies. And if it involves us losing stars like they did Buddy - I still think it works out better in the long run.

Indeed. Two flags after he left. Cats won a flag after Ablett Jnr left too.

Noble shouldn't be in the best 22 at all next year.

Agree with this. Has pace, and can run and carry alright when he has it, but otherwise he's fumbles city and doesn't always make a good decision.

Happy for him to be usable depth but the minute he, Madgen and Cameron all became "best 22" is everything wrong with us atm.

So with DeGoeys money freed up we will be able to get a replacement FA that will more than likely serve us better into the future (altho none appeal next year!) but we will lose out on a good 1st pick for compo.
I believe he woulda been "poached" thru RFA with our blessing b4 any of this anyway
So it is missing out on that 3 - 10 compo pick that hurts.
I dont think that we have any more "boys" in the club, Ruscoe maybe? Just shows the importance of character that a few other clubs talk about as so important. Stevo, DeGoey, Beams ... did not tick that box.
So the winning culture under McRae can take off with a bright future hopefully.

How many last chances does he get?

On SM-G981B using BigFooty.com mobile app

He'll likely get one more chance if things go the way I anticipate they might with the sentencing if he is found guilty (ie. fine / reparation payments to the victims plus immediate deportation / being barred from re-entering the USA), given that it appears to be a relatively low scale class A misdemeanour not serious enough for incarceration based on what has been reported thus far, and that community service or probation may not be a feasible option for a foreign citizen in the country on a temporary visa.

The victims may also get their pound of flesh by instigating civil proceedings as well, which would almost certainly lead to a relatively quick out-of-court settlement.

It will, however, be his last chance and will likely involve some fairly heavy counselling around alcohol consumption as he's simply an idiot when drunk and probably some strong recommendations regarding the type of people he associates himself with off-field. Another screw up and there isn't a club in the AFL that would want him.

We really need to undo the Grundy arrangement. Either ask him to take a hefty pay cut, or trade him. No successful team has paid what players are worth to keep the team together.

Not only do we need to resign Maynard, Moore and Degoey. We also need cap space to attract more talent

How about you wait for things to play out before making plans on what we should do with the Jordy money. He’s already had one charge dropped, you’re getting way ahead of yourself assuming he’ll be sacked.

Do you think we could trade for pick 2 in this years draft? Our future first and third for this years pick 2 as an example. It has a two fold effect, we pick up two top end talents… but we bid on Darcy with pick two to push an eventual Daicos bid to pick 4 or beyond?

I think we should try trade into the first round when the best available tall will go.

2022 would be better for talls than this year tbh.

I thought we counseled him on his drinking and his choice of social circle after he got done for drink-driving in 2018.

Ideally when rebuilding you draft the talls first…that’s another year we have to wait…they take longer to come on.

There are talls who will be good in the second round this year and next year's crop of talls already looks promising.

I'm not excited at paying heavy overs to get Gibcus for example this year, given who else will be there later on in the draft and who might be there for us next year with our first round pick.

Stevo DeGoey Sier Beams.

Another year = do it right. Mindlessly trading up to draft a player that may not be the best fit is a risky choice.

Cameron will be best 22 for a long while yet...

6th in the comp for contested marks, over a goal a game average

He’s as good as a ruck forward gets

And who’s going to suddenly replace him at ruck forward?

Grundy. Hear me out on this one.

Grundy plays forward/ruck to utilise his marking ability.

Cameron plays at HF.

If Cox comes back, then he plays as a tap ruckman, less time forward.

You lost me at utilising Grundy's marking ability. He's an elite player, but marking is his gaping weakness (for his size).

We've also tried going tall before, and it hasn't worked. Teams rebound too easily out of our F50

Grundy's always taking marks during games. We've seen him play out of the square before vs. Richmond and that was destructive. He's rarely given the chance, though, and that is why people ignore his ability. By swapping a player out, that means the lineup isn't too tall.

It was interesting to listen to the GWS national recruiting manager (Adrian Caruso) on the Herald Sun draft podcast this week.

Sounds like they are likely to only take 3 picks in the ND (currently hold 2, 13, 53, 54, 71, 89); with their 3rd pick likely to be their GWS academy player Josh Fahey. Fahey is fairly highly ranked and may attract a bid in the 25-40 range; meaning Giants will need points to match. They have also been linked to a couple of DFAs (Brander/Gibbons) so that will probably be their last couple of picks off the list here.

It is probably in the Giants best interest to stay away from ND at 2. If they don't bid until after pick 2 then our pick 36 becomes expendable to us and attractive to them. We trade them 36 so they have 36, 53 and 54 to match for Fahey and we use 36 to ask the Giants for their future 2nd. Seems like a win/win for both parties.

I think we'd probably have to throw in a future third as well.

GWS is going to use Pick 2 to get more youth into their system, likely after a bid on Darcy at 3. They won't be trading it. Look at us when we recruited using late picks in 2019. The haul was okay but nothing to brag about. Rantall, Ruscoe and Bianco ... they were all good players but we're yet to see real results. One of them is off our books, so that should say something about using only late picks. GWS should draft pick 2.

In response to another post: why are we so hung about a future second? Second round draft picks are not necessarily amazing. Oh yes, sure, they can be good but I'd wait until the end of next season before ripping into the need for seconds.
