It's a bit weird how all of a sudden, we have a "huge war chest".
I seem to recall that Wrighty said a few months back that we still had some lingering salary cap issues.
Really not a strategic thing for Wright to come out in the media and say we have lots of space in the cap.

Not helpful for leverage on existing players needing to be re-contracted and prospective players coming in.

The way the Treloar situation was handled was nothing short of deplorable. Incredibly disrespectful to Adam and I feel for the guy.

Phillips was handled professionally and maturely.

I don't know if there's a whole lot of info around about how Stephenson was handled - my understanding is essentially the rumours were allowed to fester until Stevo called Buckley to ask what was going on and Buckley said to find a new home. That's a pretty cold way to handle things but didn't have the gaslighting and innuendo attached to the Treloar trade.

Bosenavulagi was a non-issue. He was out of contract, we hadn't offered him one. He was probably going to be delisted.

But in terms of whether the trades themselves were uncalled for - probably not.

Was it the club or the player that differed?

I suppose. McStay I can at least understand, given he's big and perfectly happy to play both ends.

Hill, however, is just not someone I would bother with at all. I'd rather a pick in the 40s than him.

All to appease the "Do Better" report

I think today underlined why we are after McStay. As I said earlier, one reason is he is gettable. Don't waste time on pipe dreams. If Mihocek has a shocker we look light on for a contested mark.

He also offers versatility. Today he could have gone back or even pinch hit in the ruck. With a fit Krueger we have 3 very mobile, marking targets inside 50.
If we get him I hope you are proven right

Hill is lightning with good skills. His potential to come good and really impact is high. Plus him and Ginni competing for goal celebrations would be great to watch.

Except there is nothing to indicate that at all. Grundy was even better at the same age in 2015. Better in ruck contests, took more marks, laid more tackles, got more of the footy, gathered more clearances. His disposal efficiency was worse (he was kicking it much more than Jackson), and Jackson kicks 0.15 more goals per game than Grundy did in 2015.

So please, tell me where this incredible development is coming from? Jackson is a mediocre ruck in the sense of ruck contests, doesn't take many marks, and doesn't kick many goals.

I mean, he played okay in the Grand Final I guess. A few good tackles and some hitouts. But it was hardly some epic performance.
Watch footy mate. If you can’t see that he’s a super talent then that’s on you

Clubs force players to move all the time. It's a business. That Treloar felt the need to run to the media and publicly air private conversations in the middle of trade period was fairly deplorable in itself.

Of course it is not comparable because we don't know who we have recruited and what we have given up for them.
We know the deal is in excess of $500k per year for 5 years for McStay. Don’t bring up a comparison and then claim we can’t compare because we don’t know. We have enough information here to go on.

I don’t mind the players we’re targeting and think both could be handy pickups.

The North game exposed how short we are for KPP depth, and in the game McStay would have been handy to bolster the backline to clamp down on Larky, or push forward cause Checkers was getting towelled up.

The sticking point seems to be a media speculated salary range, which could well be wildly off the mark as they prefer headlines/clicks to accuracy.

Hill I think is a savvy choice too as a buy-low/high ceiling prospect. Won’t cost us more than a 3rd rounder, but if he stays forward could release McCreery into a DeGoey style forward-mid type role, or even eventually channel his cousin (brother?) Brad on a wing after Sidey pulls the pin.

Chances you pick up a long-term player with a 3rd rounder are quite low as it is, and Hill both helps fills the 21-26 age bracket we’re deficient in plus has pretty significant upside. Astute pickup IMO.
