If there’s a modicum of truth to the Grundy rumours that’s interesting too.

I do think he’s our best ruckman, but comparing adding Grundy back into the current lineup vs a Taranto type (with Grundy cap savings), and IMO the stronger net gain is with the latter.

Clubs force players to move all the time. It's a business. That Treloar felt the need to run to the media and publicly air private conversations in the middle of trade period was fairly deplorable in itself.
I don't disagree that it's a business and clubs force players to move all the time. But to use Treloar's mental health against him to push him out was insensitive.

The way you responded makes it seem like you think the club has clean hands on it.

Bit weird how some here think the way the club has handled JDG in the past 12 months is incredibly disrespectful and childish ... Yet the way the club handled Treloar is somehow fine? Weird discontent from some.

Hill I think is a savvy choice too as a buy-low/high ceiling prospect. Won’t cost us more than a 3rd rounder, but if he stays forward could release McCreery into a DeGoey style forward-mid type role, or even eventually channel his cousin (brother?) Brad on a wing after Sidey pulls the pin.

Chances you pick up a long-term player with a 3rd rounder are quite low as it is, and Hill both helps fills the 21-26 age bracket we’re deficient in plus has pretty significant upside. Astute pickup IMO.
I don’t think anyone here would object to picking up Hill for a third. However the expectation has been that he would cost more than that, and the documentary capturing the angst around his potential trade last year indicated he was being fairly demanding in terms of contract length… so one might logically assume he wants decent money…

Did they put a number on it?

This year his value is less than last year, both in terms of $ and trade currency IMO - I think we’d get it done for a 3rd rounder personally. Perhaps a fairly meaningless swap of picks on top of that. If so, I think it’s good business.

Medical issues aside, he certainly hasn’t done anything on field to warrant much more than that.

What's the point in trading Grundy if a club is going to expect us to continue paying half a million for him each year until 2027?

He has currency that’s a given.
At the same time we will be open to pay a portion but not half of it.
If he was put on the table there would be multiple suitors come for him for sure.

We aren’t going to just splash the cash unnecessarily.

We will target players who will fill some needs and continue to bank some picks too to add to our youth.
That doesn’t mean we will spend the war chest for the sake of it.

I think GW knows what he’s doing.
His last few years at Hawthorn will tell you otherwise

How often have other clubs used a player's personal issues as means to force them out? It's a rhetorical question because Treloar is the only player to run to the media about what happens behind closed doors whilst they are still playing. Well except for Josh Jenkins and that turned out well.

Imagine the conversations with Heath Shaw about the clear personal reasons he was pushed out. We can only imagine because Shaw didn't run to the media to spill the beans.

I think I'd prefer the third rounder tbh

We recruited Leigh Brown for a token pick on minimum chips. Not really comparable.

Of course it is not comparable because we don't know who we have recruited and what we have given up for them.

We know the deal is in excess of $500k per year for 5 years for McStay. Don’t bring up a comparison and then claim we can’t compare because we don’t know. We have enough information here to go on.
He’s unrestricted we don’t have to give up anything

The kind of cowardly language that AFL journalists thrive on makes me so annoyed. A few choice quotes, highlighting the complete speculation and inability to commit to anything:

Dual All-Australian Kane Cornes believes offloading Brodie Grundy would solve a “significant problem”
Tom Browne said there’d been “whispers in recent weeks that Collingwood might be prepared to put Grundy up for trade”.
While the Pies “haven’t revealed their hand yet”, Browne said the prospect of them asking for a trade for Grundy was “a live issue now in the back part of the year”.
“My information this afternoon is that Grundy’s management is now even expecting Collingwood to possibly flag the prospect of them asking if Grundy is interested in being traded,” Browne said
“But it’s become a bit of an open secret in football – or certainly a view – that they will ask that again. I emphasise that Collingwood hasn’t revealed its hand in this regard, but that’s certainly a possibility, in my view and from my information, now in the back part of the season and from a trade perspective.

Does this utter shit actually pass for journalism? These guys are being paid so much money to say such little of worth

Amusing that there can be such a thing as “an open secret” at Collingwood.

Truth gets reported.
Mistruth gets reported.
Speculation gets reported.
Opinion gets reported.

Who has actual secrets on Collingwood but has successfully kept them out of the media to date?

We still have a few holes in our list.
It’s most likely that a Grundy and Cameron pairing is better than a Cameron Cox pairing. But how much better is it?
Would a Cameron/Cox pairing with the additions of a couple of mids (eg Taranto plus ?and still JDG) or a Taranto and a KPF at the expense of Grundy be a better outcome?

It's yet another example of journalists peddling opinion as "fact".

Yes we do, we have to give up somewhere in the realms of $5-600k per year in salary cap for 5 years. That’s the contentious part. Nobody would have an issue if he was being recruited at $450-500k for 3, or at Leigh Brown bargain basement cost.

In the past it would have been seen as a “Good problem to have” when you have more quality options available for selection.

Let’s read between the reported lines:
“A rumour has started that Collingwood may be interested in trading Grundy Because of the Cox/Cameron combination doing so well In his absence. Collingwood haven’t declared their hand, but it could be in their interests to do so”

Depending on the club, we will pay little, if any, of his salary and still get a good deal. Truth is, we could actually come out on top.
