To get the Salary cap back under control by moving an overpaid player contracted for way too long.
Even if we pay 200k that leaves 800K back to the cap.
It has nothing to do with the salary cap.

Any move on Grundy is to remove a bad contract from the books on a player that can “potentially” be used to upgrade our best 22. For me it really comes down to what we value most between free salary cap room or trade currency because it’s now inevitable there will be a discussion. Once the discussion starts it’s almost impossible to pump the brakes.

In regards to the “but who will replace him” stuff basically go to any state league game and you’ll find one. There are Darcy Cameron’s all over the joint and the pick of the bunch for mine is Meek. JLC you’re spot on there’s absolutely no way we’d be going at a guy for $400k because that’s best 22 money leaving us with a guy on good coin at VFL level. What is the logic in clearing out Grundy’s deal only to then go and offer someone $400k with Kreuger and Begg sitting there waiting to be developed?

How do we get something better in return?

You trade him and get some combination of player(s), pick(s) and salary cap relief in return. I'd imagine Wright could do something special with Grundy as a bargaining chip. Or we keep him, which is my preference, and we have amazing ruck.

Let’s hope that his pride kicks in and being spoken about as the second string ruckman now ignites a fire in him and we get the 2019 version back. Then it’s a no brainer we keep him. All depending on him getting back this year and fully match fit. Big ifs

Considering we have salary cap room come end of year---we can always front load some of Grundy's contract and thus open it up in his latter years to create space that way too.

I'm open to exploring the Grundy scenario but as someone pointed out--it isnt a problem because he is a proven quality footballer--and if he returns the way he finished ANZAC Day, then we are really well placed.

Let’s hope he does , to me , he is a wolf in sheep clothing, money hungry mercenary.
or you know he's just an individual plying his trade in a profession that has a limited lifespan and is trying to get paid as much as he can for doing his job... kinda like most people do in the real world ya know

Poor treatment of Grundy imo
Think he will walk tbh
I can see it now...

Grundy "I don't like being floated as trade bait, so I'm leaving to play for another team"

Wright "Umm, ok then"

If it is decided that Grundy will ply elsewhere next year, we won’t be paying much of his salary if any. We are not hamstrung like we were before.
If we do pay, then it will be a small amount for a short period of time so we can trade in a couple of established players to make us better.

If part of the trade includes us receiving a player currently in contract, then we will be paying even less.

To be honest I find this all extremely unpalatable and hard to stomach.

Particularly since all reports suggest the Adelaide based clubs were willing to offer up 2 first round picks before he re-signed.

When our club makes a incompetent decision it’s usually a doozy.

But just to entertain your proposition what about Xavier Duursma + a second round pick for Brody + his full contract?

It would relieve them of their underperforming contracted player to provide some room to carry Brodies contract.

And who knows maybe we turn him around. If not, we only have to carry his significantly smaller bloated contract for the remaining 2 years.

I still think we are getting reamed. Principally because as much as I don’t think he is living up to his contract, he is still fairly easily our best ruck.

At the behest of getting his “ best “ mate Treloar off our books to satiate his own greed , with best mates like that , who needs enemies!

Is still be pushing for a first rounder with a player as you have suggested.

the point that I was trying to make and that you picked up on was that we won’t need to pay for his contract because clubs will have some cash available to use + the money allocated to the traded player (ie in your example Dursma) would go somewhat the distance to cover the contract.

if port is the team, they will have some relief with Boak, Dixon and Gray not far from retirement

People just don't get it, salary dumps don't get a premium return. Fanciful stuff suggesting Reg will get back a kings ransom. It's nor happening and the cap is under control. Core player who we'll be keeping.

Last year's Norm Smith medallist Christian Petracca and Tiger forward Tom Lynch have deals which will could see them join the million-dollar-a-season club in 2022.

The total player payments across the 18 clubs were $233.9 million, a 37.5 per cent increase on the COVID-19-hit 2020 season, which saw players paid $170.0 million as the League grappled to contain the financial damage caused by the pandemic.

The 2020 total player payments were 30 per cent down on the 2019 figure of $242.3 million, which remains the high-water mark for player remuneration. The 2021 figure of $233.9 million presents similarly to the 2017 season, when players were paid a total of $231.3 million.

FANTASY PRICES Million-dollar men unveiled

And in 2017, there were nine million-dollar footballers compared with the six of 2021.

Remarkably, there were more players earning $1.2 million or more in 2012 (four) than there were in 2021 (three).

Yeh still says believed to be
That isn’t proof

Key word there a "possibility"......So really no clue as to what will happen
None of the reports have any certainty.
It's all basically journos spouting any bullshit that comes into their heads.
Here's an example:
“But it’s become a bit of an open secret in football – or certainly a view – that they will ask that again. I emphasise that Collingwood hasn’t revealed its hand in this regard, but that’s certainly a possibility, in my view and from my information, now in the back part of the season and from a trade perspective."

Just clickbait.

Good news this if we’ve front loaded his contract somewhat, allows us a bit more flexibility.

If he has say 850k p.a left on his contract over 5 years, clubs will be queuing up. I mean Rory Lobb is on similar coin.

For the record I’m happy to keep him, but if a bidding war starts you’d be stupid not to entertain it.

Why am I in for a shock at seasons end?
when I haven’t actually stated anything apart from everyone needs to calm down and no one but Grundy and manager/club/AFL know what he’s on.

Yeh you are correct “under stood “ and also states other players “believed”

Wingnut
You said that Grundy was believed to be on 1 million, we weren't talking about other players, no need for name calling, you made a mistake, just own it

There's no doubt we front ended his contract, that would be one of the reasons why our SC was still a bit full this year and also explains why we have more for next year

Who said that it’s a salary dump? I don’t think we are in a dire position that requires us to dump him- particularly if his contract was front loaded. It would only be a dump if it meant that trading him would allow us to get something that would allow us to improve in another area.
I would doubt that Port or Adelaide would be anywhere near cap capacity
