But it still doesn't counteract the blisteringly obvious argument that, right now and as illustrated for three quarters against the Bombers, we are being slaughtered in the centre of the ground. It's our glaring weakness at the moment and needs to be fixed...urgently. If we end up being ranked 18th for clearance differential this season, flag contention won't even be the slightest possibility for us.

I would thought the blistering hot argument ATM is that we've won 9 in a row without winning clearances and without grundy. as I said, we need grundy playing well to be a serious finals contender, but, you're living in the past if you think Grundy is going to completely transform our clearance numbers

Can't find the differential rankings but in average number of clearances we're ranked 14th. Actually North are way above us...

I think it's his way of trying to come across as earnest/create some drama but yeah.............it just makes him appear more over .05 than otherwise might be the case.

Recent history suggests that high clearance rank is not critical to winning flags like it was in the past.
The inferior clearance teams have won all of the last 6 flags, and 7 of the last 10.

well richmonds game is an anomoly re clearances
and then 2021 and 2018 GFs the premiers' midfield dominated in the last third of the game and won them the match

You're giving him far too much credit. He still gives half of his articles to the editor in crayon actually

Yeah I agree with your point, that's why they use Stringer in there aswell who is the point of difference, the move of Merret and Stringer in Q2 coincided with there dominating periods. Along with obvs Draper taking our 2 guys to town.

Stringer happens to be a downhill skier though so is hot and cold.

Caldwell and Hobbs also got rotations.

I'm a bit lairy about him. But then I think of guys like Keays, Brodie, Kennedy who were written off so maybe I need to be open-minded. One red flag for me though is he didn't want to leave SA before his last contract so I wonder if Melbourne is an environment he'll be happy in.

Not sure we will go down this path, but I absolutely agree. Ball winner who can win clearances. Yes he is slow and probably not a great defensive runner, but surely he can be had for a late draft pick and if anything, helps our really terrible midfield depth.

This does have a Jarryd Lyons/Will Brodie vibe to it.
