Dunn played 33 games for us across 4 seasons. Brown was good but never amazing.

Yep and what a sweet 33 games they were from Dunn! Browns early career is very underrated. He was excellent and then became an honest footballer later after injuries.

Ben McKay from North is who we should be chasing. He is exactly what we need to build a premiership team and fits the age profile. I'm tired of the lean bodied kp draftees. We need strength. He is already the leading intercept marker in the AFL. McStay? = not enthused but maybe it's who's gettable.

wait til he is a FA next year for McKay. North would ask for a 1st rounder right now. Or two 1sts given how important he is to them.
Not worth it.

After watching Essendon nearly beat us by having big bodies up forward and down back, I have no problem in getting a 196cm, 97kg beast, we really need some size and strength at both ends

Yeah, makes me really miss Roughy.

Murphy has been a great story this season, but both he and Howe are better suited to that 3rd tall intercepting role - a proper sized FB would be handy.

Twomey will get closer with the order. Knightmare I often disagree with but he's got a really good record with key position players. I think he's got an interesting approach with what he looks for which has some runs on the board.
Spot on! Then there’s P4L who has a bit of both going on because he has those industry contacts to get a feel for who’ll go where, but he also seems to have a very good eye for talent.

I think most of my disagreements with Knightmare stem from his frankly ridiculous trade scenarios. To this day the deal he suggested for priority access to Lukosious (Moore+Elliott+2017 1st) lives rent free in my mind. I lost a lot of respect for his trade views that day and have never seen them in the same light since. That said I’d never question his assessments of a Jnr in isolation.

Yeah spot on. Think having McStay come across he offers some versatility to play at both ends. I reckon he would suit our game style as well.

He will slot in well at FB releasing Moore to CHB. Murphy and Howe as more intercept type players and Quaynor/Maynard/Crisp/N.Daicos as the running back flankers who can spend time through the midfield.

From what I remember, McStay can take a grab and is pretty hard at the contest.

Why? when you can get him for nothing next year.
I mean Pendles, Howe and Steele all in the last year of contracts next year might have something to do with it. In terms of contending 2024 is a long way away so you’re always better off with the pre-agent path even with the increased cost.

Dunn and Brown were both excellent full backs at their peaks with us.
Brown was also a very solid stopper who complimented Reid when they were both fit.
Reid’s glass body forcing Brown and Frost to pair up was the beginning of his downfall 🤮

Possible. I suppose it depends what they plan on doing with our first rounder. Whether they plan to use it at the draft, or use it in a trade for Taranto. So therefore rules out any possible trade for McKay. Doesn't seem its something that we are considering.

That back 6 was one of the lowest skilled group of defenders I can remember. I'm trying to remember them all. Was it Brown, Frost, Toovey, Sinclair, Williams, Oxley or something like that. Ouch!

McKay's a better FA prospect. Carlton's list has to perform well in September and be competitive in 2023 or else they'll ditch as their salary cap is squeezed as.

If we are after McStay as a defender, wouldn't we be better off chasing Darcy Gardner from the Lions? Restricted free agent who hasn't re signed yet, at least he's a bloody good defender

Met Darcy once a few years ago. Deceptively tall.

I think it goes a smidge further and hinges on what they do with JDG and Grundy. In reality it’s a McKay and Taranto salary cap space discussion. To do that cap wise one of JDG or Grundy is out, IMO. Once they’re moved on you’d have the chips to make everything work.

The bolded is the guts of it really and I think we might just need to have faith in the Leppa/ McStay connection if defense is the intention.

Next years FA period.

McStay isnt being recruited to be a hawkins, daniher, McKay style of KPF

We are getting him to be a 2nd mihocek who covers a lot of ground and is an amazing link man for a team that plays transition footy.

Right now with mihocek it looks as if we dont have a true kpf becuase of his role. It is likely to stay that way because thats not the type of footy we are going to play. we will be super mobile and itll be great to watch

Having Ben McKay on our list:
1. A large big bodied defender to match up on the monster KPF
2. Also a contested mark & intercept defender when required.
3. Brings another dimension to our matches v Carlton

ps I want Big Ben on our list

Ben and Harry have never played an AFL game against one another. This is because they’re actually the same person.

Man we had some average players back then. Jack Frost, Josh Smith, Corey Gault. The golden era

2015 Draft

Carlton: Weitering, McKay, Charlie Curnow, Silvagni
Collingwood: Sier, Phillips, Wills, Crocker

Nb we traded our 1st Round pick for Treloar

Lets be honest, nobody actually knows if that's even the true. But that's not our issue. As fans we should only be concerned with whether he'll help us be better. Leave the list management stuff to the list management. Once its done, he'll be one of us for however long it is.

And I like to think of it as an auction. To buy something highly valued in an industry, you need to outbid your rivals. Even if its a little more than you might have wished to pay. But thinking of the long term investment makes it worth it.

To get someone from a top 4 club that has a chance to win a flag, you need to offer more than what he's currently offered. Its a buyer's market.

Forwards are a rare commodity right now, especially experienced ones, hence all the compeition for him. So is it a touch more than we like? Sure, but if thats what it takes, you sometimes have to pay it.
Also lets be real. Free Agents tend to get long term deals. Its the whole point of the system. Very rarely you'd find a forward in a top 4 club getting offers from rivals with short term deals. Players wouldn't move anywhere if that was the case.

Going over the same argument for the last month doesnt change the facts. Plus, who knows he may ivogorate his career with a role change or new environment and become useful.
Let the world think it’s 600x 5 to justify McStay leaving.
When infact he could be moving for less and just wants a change.
I live in hope.
