I doubt any fan would be happy if it ends up what the article is suggesting , McStay for DeGoey. Says cheaper don’t think he will be significantly cheaper either.
Are there still nuffies out there who think we can’t match any bid and force a trade?

We've only seen trades occur a few times on free agents. The key thing with Cameron and Dangerfield is that they didn't walk for money. They went for lifestyle to a club who wasn't paying the usual FA overs. the other ones ahve been small fish that went for small trades to protect FA compo.

If you match, you've got to be willing to keep the player at the contracted rate. And that contracted rate is likely to be more than the other club is willing to pay him if picking him up as a trade.
Geelong offered Cameron a salary they believed GWS would/could not match, it wasn’t unders, it was pushing $1m a season iirc, and they were shocked when GWS did match.

The fact is, that after a club has put in the work to lure a player, they’re very unlikely to walk away from a deal, even if it turns out a trade is involved. The very fact that Collingwood has been in discussions with the likes of Geelong and St Kilda who are linked to Jordy should tell you that they’re proactive about telling clubs they won’t let a marquee player walk for nothing.

if this is right they have crapped on Mihocek and he should demand a trade.

My recollection is different. I recall GWS saying all along that they intended to match the bid. And yes he's on huge money - reported at the time as $900,000 a year. But that's probably what you'd expect to pay to retain him, rather than the usual FA overs.

If McStay is coming the club isn't stupid enough to lose Jordie for nothing. The Cats thought they could get Jezza for free then GWS matched and that juicy draft hand of 3 first round picks went ****! If Jordie wants to go we match and get something, end of story.

And Trade for McStay

IF so Done then like in Soccer and NRL they should be able to say where they go next season

Surely as fans we should be mature enough. People know at this part of the season anyway

Didn't GWS stop playing Corr once he said he was leaving? I think AFL has a culture of being angry at players who leave, and hence you won't see anyone announce it early.

SEN’s Sam Edmund reported Geelong was taken aback by the Giants’ response.

“I actually think Geelong were a bit surprised. My mail is they were very confident they would get Jeremy Cameron for nothing trade-wise,” Edmund told SEN Breakfast.

“That offer is enormous, five years at more than $900,000. I think they were somewhat surprised that the match has come back from GWS.

Slowly starting to change. Lobb has already informed Freo that he wants to be traded at the end of the year.

Remember the backlash when Bucks mentioned he had met Lynch.
Then many Gold Coast players openly bagged Lynch (who was out injured for the balance of the season).
Bucks apologised etc

McStay contract in some way cost us getting Taranto, I will be very disappointed.

McStay cost us Taranto in some way I'll be fuming.
I’m struggling with the wording of this because it’s not logical as it’s written. These moves start in the background 12-18 months out and there really is no circumstance where one recruit would jeopardise the possibility of another coming in. As an example it’s like saying “if Mayne cost us Wells in some way I’ll be fuming”.

I doubt the two are linked. I can’t see us getting Taranto if de goey stays though. Think it’s one or the other

I think the point is if we get McStay as a free agent and lose De Goey compensation which will no doubt be sought in a Taranto trade.

Don’t think it will cost us Taranto but it could cost us our first round draft pick which we will need to trade for Taranto under the worse case scenario.
