Do players even care how much their team mates are earning in comparison? Or is it more that we get offended on their behalf?
I’d say some would. It’s a workplace. Imagine you’re sitting at your computer terminal (or whatever) and Ol Matey next door is sitting at his, doing a shittier job but getting paid significantly more than you and you knew it. Would annoy most people IMO.

Particularly if you’re a long-suffering servant of said company and Ol Matey next door is a blow-in poached from ‘Computers R Us’ down the road.

That's a fair slice of the pie off his contract, if true. So he is willing to take $650k - $700k a year instead? Saying he is on $950k to $1M a year now, but not sure how his contract is staggered throughout its term. So he may still earn $800k one year, instead of $1.1M.
I wonder if that's what the club has asked him to consider doing in order to help us get in players that they believe will help us get to a premiership.
Contracts can be renegotiated in terms of monetary value and length of time, but needs to obviously be agreed by player, manager and the club....
Can always have him keep playing into his 40s

Yes, but to get free agents to your club you need to pay above, that's a fact of the free agency market. I'm sure the players understand that in order to improve the list, and to get players into our club to fill required needs, this is how it works.
Yeah, my response was lazy. paying FA higher than existing players on a list doesnt breed discontent. Paying overs for run of the mill players and clogging a list with additional average free agents is something to avoid and would make existing guys like mihocek feel under valued.

It's all very speculative, given the trade talks are just that at this point, speculation. To entertain the hypothetical, what I would say is that we have form paying a percentage of outgoing players wages, and all clubs have form in overpaying incoming players, so it's not a simple equation of A: We've either front loaded the contract, or, if not B: nobody would want him.

If clubs are interested in Grundy and we are entertaining the idea of trading him, it's hardly a smoking gun that we've front-loaded his contract IMO.

Not saying it's impossible, but feels a little like spurious reasoning.

That is illogical. If we have front-loaded his contract we would want to keep him as the cap benefit pays out in the years when he is paid relatively less…

Given he is only in year 2 of a 7 year deal, would have to have been some serious front-ending. Coming off the back of our previous cap issues? Unlikely

Surely JDG doesn't stay for $500k a season, would he?
Considering the club were offering him $800k x 2, that's a big drop. I thought they would re-evaluate the contract to at least $600k - $650k.
The rumour is the Saints offer is $750k x 3, so whether he would rather stay with us where he is comfortable, or move for a pretty standard contract elsewhere.
We just saw Brayshaw at Melbourne re-signed, and apparently could have made over $300k more elsewhere....

What are the calibre of the sources like Jen? We talking those who would have the inside scoop? Or BF rumour board type Thources?

Unfortunately just heresay at the moment. Just word of mouth. I’m not taking it with much value but would be nice.

I can't say I understand contract evaluations, but in the context of our rumoured contracts to retain Grundy, Moore and what we were supposedly offering Degoey before Bali gate, $900,000 for Jezza sounds like a retention cost rather than a poaching cost. And cheap in comparison to what the Tigers supposedly paid to poach Lynch and other high profile FA rumoured contracts. So I find the Cats shock a bit surprising.
Camerons form in 2020 had been poor, which had diminished his value a little, with only 24 goals from 17 games. Over $900k was regarded as slight overs at the time. I think $800k was what GWS were offering.
You were right about the overall point though, in all the articles at the time - there was no suggestion that the gws matching was going to result in the retention of Jezza. They knew that the Cats were fully committed and would trade.
Yep. They’d committed, which was the point. And I’m glad they did, because Heelong gettin Cameron for free and then having 3 first round selection available to use would have been massive bollocks.

Next season assuming Grundy still plays for us, is there a chance that Brody and Darcy could be our key forwards and McStay could be used as a key back? I think filling a key back spot is as important as finding out forward and not sure McStay is the answer up forward.

doubtful, I still believe Grundy will be doing 50-60% ruck.

I think the only issue most people have with Mcstay the forward is that we’ll be investing several list spots on these “3rd tall forwards”.

  • Mcstay
  • Mihocek
  • Kreuger
  • AJ
  • Henry

This doesn’t include possibly playing Cameron as the KPF/2nd ruck. Cox triggering a clashes for another year in his contract.

7 players to essentially fill 4 spots on a weekly basis?

Unless, we think Henry is going and then it doesn’t look as bad.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Kreuger is asked to move back to the backline.

And Trade

With all the rumours about Grundy, and trading him out to reducing his contract, tells me that Wrighty has come in and been staggered we gave Grundy that contract. He has decided to fix this up, and put us in the best position to get players onto our list that fill needs...
What a series of contradictions, do you think Reg doesn't fit a need? And I doubt he was staggered by his contract but rather knew exactly what it was when he got the job. Like all good footy managers he would listen to other clubs but not be obliged to do anything that won't make the club better. And after watching Draper smash DC making him the no1 ruck option doesn't make us better.

Paying Mcstay 5 x 600k feels like Chris Mayne V2.0

If the options being presented are, “reduce your contract and stay, or receive the agreed dollars and we trade you”, if I am Brodie I would be saying bye bye.

If McStay is coming the club isn't stupid enough to lose Jordie for nothing. The Cats thought they could get Jezza for free then GWS matched and that juicy draft hand of 3 first round picks went ****! If Jordie wants to go we match and get something, end of story.
Exactly. And two first rounders means we have the capital to target someone else or attack the draft.

As much as I disliked Mayne early on here, he turned into a very handy player by the end
After his transformation, he was a solid contributor and worth the money. Should have, along with many others, had a premiership medal around his neck.

No, overall per year.

Been told by two people, so we'll see. Would help

Other rumour is we have offered do goey 500 x 2 and he will take it.

Time will tell.
That means we'd have $600k spare - which leaves enough for McStay.

There's a lot of rumour mill around so I think it's best to take most things with a grain of salt until otherwise known for sure. I remember joking on a Fox Footy chat that Stephenson was a lock to leave for Brisbane (in 2019) only to be told that it was stupid and he never would leave the Pies.
