Yeah, but his “ruckwork” isn’t something we value hence we are moving towards Cameron and Cox who’s ruckwork is okay at best.

Contested midfield work will be replaced by Mitchell.

Grundy (900k) vs Cameron & Mitchell

Hitouts: Grundy wins

Midfield:(clearances, tackles& CPs) Mitchell wins
Contested mark: Cameron

You can’t think about this in linear manner.

We are moving away from a clearance first ruckman towards a marking ruckman who “competes in the ruck”.

Mitchell can fill the Grundy size midfield hole.
How about we keep Reg and get another good midfielder (not Mitchell) because Adams and Mitchell would be truly awful together. They don't complement each other in any way.

Not surprised re Phillips - very good moving letting him go. Kicking was always a weakness. Big ups to GW for accepting the deal. GW always ahead of the game.
So far ahead of the game that he was making moves whilst working for another club ...

Wut, no way. Unless they're offering 700-800k why would he want to go there...

Lol since when has Hawthorn been linked to Hopper? And why he would he go there over Geelong? Or Richmond or us?
There was no detail. Just a throw away line saying Hopper was likely to go to Hawthorn.
It was somewhere around 10:45am - 11:15am this morning. Not sure if you can play back SEN broadcast on their website or something?

Anyone know if Hopper and Taranto are close mates or anything?

In the event we lose De Goey and Grundy (I don't want either to go.) I wonder if it would leave us with the opportunity to sign Hopper, Taranto, Hill and Frampton.

Think it would mean us turning our back on McStay, not only for salary cap reasons, but to ensure we got the De Goey Compo pick.

If Grundy is to be traded, I hope the club really weighs up the benefits of clearing as much of his contract off our books vs. what we get for him in terms of picks.

For the sake of this post im just going to link him to Hawthorn. Not sure what Hawthorns cap is like for example, but if we were able to clear his whole contract and get peanuts in return for him it could be significantly more beneficial instead of clearing ~600-650k p.a. and paying $300k p.a. for 5 years.

I personally think covering grundys contract to that amount mixed with what level of player a team is potentially getting means surely top 5 pick should be expected.

Hawthorn have pick 6 currently i believe, this could bump back if north (and Adelaide?) get a high compo pick. Ashcroft will be bid on before their pick, unaware if there's any other high bids expected. Instantly puts them to pick 7, potentially 8 or 9 depending on the NM & Adel situation.

We have a pretty good trading relationship with GWS, the live pick deal we did with them on draft night in 2020 and them electing to not bid on Daicos are two of the examples of a good relationship between the clubs.

Taranto is OOC but isn't a free agent, but I think GWS would be pretty reasonable in arranging a deal for him, hopper out of contract next year but if he asks to be traded they will surely offload him as long as they don't get bent over.

If we end up with:

  • Pick 14 (ends up 15+ on draft night)
  • End of 1st for De Goey
  • Grundys contract cleared off the books for a mid/late second pick (Hawthorn would need to break their pick 24 down into a couple later picks to satisfy this)

Surely we can fit in all 4 of those players into the cap in that scenario.

Pick 14, Pick 19, mid/late 2nd round, 3 x early/mid 3rd rounds and always the option of future picks surely is enough currency for us to satisfy trades without selling the farm.

The mid/late second and 3 X 3rds could very easily be appealing to Brisbane for points for Ashcroft.

A final net result of something like:

Players Out: De Goey, Grundy inc. whole contract, maybe a steak knives player or two.

Picks Out: Pick 14, 3 X 3rd rounds

Players In: Taranto, Hopper, Frampton, Hill

Picks In: 2 X late 2nd rounds

Picks on-traded: De Goey Compo (pick 19?) Grundy pick (pick ~32?)

Side note - if there was the room to somehow afford McStay on-top of that, we clearly would trade for him so we didn't lose the De Goey compo. Offload the Grundy pick(s) and the 3rd rounds to Brisbane so they accumulate points in return for McStay and maybe some random later picks. Future second/Third would need to be involved in that above trade scenario as a result.

Frampton and Krueger means no need for McStay IMO though, Frampton should expect to be playing seconds if we get McStay

Would be a massive movement in/out of players for a team that goes to atleast week two of finals. But given Grundy hasn't played all year it's mostly the Ins that are a significant change.

Can't remember who is out of contract but we certainly move on a few fringe players for list spots.

After writing this I think Henry would be traded in any scenario like this, a mixture of saving some $$ and getting a decent pick in return. Surely would be valued as a first? Again another I don't want to lose, but maybe he already has one foot out the door.

Losing Henry in exchange for a late first mixed with the above trade scenario playing out would mean we go into the draft with a decent hand and bring in a very solid set of players. Losing Grundy, De Goey and Henry would have been unfathomable for me midway through the year, an outcome like this would certainly make it alot easier to come to terms with.

2023 lineup:

Backs: Howe, Frampton/Krueger, Murphy
Half Backs: Pendles, Moore, Naicos
Centre: Jaicos, Adams, Sidey
Half Fwds: Elliot, Frampton/Krueger, AJ
Forwards: Hill, Mihocek, McCreery
Followers: Cameron, Taranto, Maynard
Int: Hopper, Crisp, Lipinski, IQ
Emergencies: Cox, WHE, Noble (very, very stiff to miss the 22), Carmichael (Sub)

What I like about this lineup:

- KPD COVERAGE

The ability for Frampton, Krueger and even Mihocek to play either end will alleviate alot of the KPD concerns we have had post-roughead, while having players like Dean continue to develop.

- RUCK / KPF COVERAGE

Cox can come in as the number one ruck or as a KPF in the event of injury or poor form from Cameron, Krueger or Frampton

- SUPER SUBS

WHE, Carmichael would both be suited to a super-sub role. Depending on our opponent and ensuring they are getting some Gametime at AFL or VFL level would dictate who the sub is.

- VERY DEEP/DYNAMIC MIDFIELD:

The extended midfield group are a good mixture of extractors, gut runners, tackling beasts, link players, outside players that are good decision makers.

Pendles, Maynard, Jaicos, Naicos, Sidey, Elliot, Taranto, Adams, Hopper, Crisp and Lipinskis all would play midfield minutes, I could even see odd occasions someone like Hill or McCreery were thrown in for a centre bounce.

The midfield is loaded with players that can rotate down to play a defensive role, defensive rebound role. Pendlebury, Naicos, Maynard, Crisp being the main 4 that would rotate down there.

Elliot being predominantly a forward that can rotate into the midfield at times, Jaicos, Sidey, Naicos, Pendles, Adams, Lipinski, Taranto and Hopper are all capable of playing some forward minutes even if it's just as a midfield rest. The latter quartet would not necessarily be hit up targets, but would be there to extract from forward stoppages or at the foot of the marking contest.

Jaicos, Sidey are the predominant wings, IQ, Lipinski, Crisp and when selected, Noble and WHE all playing minutes there too. Not sure how many wing minutes Crisp has played, but don't mind the idea of him rotating onto the wing for little bursts.

- VARIETY OF MARKING FORWARDS & ACCURATE KICKS

Mihocek, AJ, Krueger and Elliot are a mix of sizes that are all excellent marks and have proven to be quite accurate Infront of goal. Elliot has that hybrid-ability to be that marking target or that crafty small forward. I think hill is capable of doing some pretty special things down there and by the end of his career McCreery is going to make a defenders white shorts turn brown.

List Changes
In - Taranto, Hopper, Hill, Frampton
Out - Grundy, De Goey, Henry, T Brown, C Brown, Poulter and atleast one more OOC outside 22 player.

8 seasons for 24 games. Dropped early on in 2022 and didnt get back, just 6 games. Dont think you an compare.that to Darcy.

That’s why I said in my post I wasn’t comparing them overall as footballers… but comparing their contributions as key defenders this year 🤷‍♀️

Frampton is still young, cheap, a better player than madgen and likely a better contributor to the list than Kelly

So it’s a ✅ from me

I remember when punters were complaining about Roughead and Dunn not playing a lot of senior footy before we recruited them 🙄

Wonder if they got confused and meant Bruhn? He has been linked there.

That pretty much confirms we're getting Mitchell, especially with Amon going there also
No it doesn't? you're adding 2 different rumours together and calling it a confirmation. Media keep going these click bait announcements because people get all worked up over nothing.

I am just frolicking around the site putting out little nuggets of hope, that's why I'm not employed to make such big decisions

Exactly my point.

Hawthorns DNA was elite foot skills and then they recruits Phillips lol That recruitment went against the main attribute that GW goes for.

Are you suggesting that Wright, whilst working for Hawthorn, recruited Phillips to Hawthorn in order to benefit Collingwood? If true that would be a significant black mark on his character.

I am suggesting that it was a very strange recruit and then GW comes to Collingwood. I might have to go back and read the comments post trade but it’s bloody hilarious.

PHillips recruited in Nov 2020 and GW joins in Jan 2021. So less than two months later. I imagine a fair bit of leg work went into recruiting GW. I can’t imagine they picked up the phone Jan 1st and said come to Collingwood lol

Must be based on their proclivity for mids with shot knees.

If the Frampton link is true it seems quite obvious now that our recruiting team rates SANFL performers in the current climate; Mccreery, AJ, Carmichael and now Frampton.

Wouldn't have said that was the case 2-3 years ago.

Also that we are putting a premium on foot skills. All our defenders are excellent kicks, as is Frampton.
