I think you're underestimating how long it takes most inside mids to be good, reliable AFL players. It's a seriously difficult position because it's so physical and you're up against the best players around. Not many inside mids under the age of 24 play in flags - Selwood and Pendlebury did. I can't think of too many more. Those awesome midfields drafted by Brisbane, Geelong, Melbourne weren't Premiership midfields until the guys in them were 24+. So even if we've got a couple of good likely ones, expecting them to come through so early is unrealistic.

I think your making presumptions. Mitchell is cooked, look elsewhere.

It’s not just my view, it was pretty common among the media “experts” as well.

Having listened to the Hawks fans’ justifications for Newcombe as the Rising Star this year; they don’t rate Mitchell’s performances any more. He gets the most ball but they don’t consider his use damaging enough. I don’t watch enough Hawks games to know.

I do think it’s unlikely we get both Mitchell and Fiorini, and the interest in Fiorini seems to be pretty genuine.

Yep, this.

I haven't paid any attention recently, so you could be right on Mitchell. But I'd still back him in to perform better than our 20 and 21 year old hopefuls on a big stage - if we're good enough to come this far again.

You should watch that 2018 WCE Vs Melb prelim. The most talented 21-23 year old inside mids in the country, who are now the best inside mids in the country, got torn to absolute shreds by a mature group. So backing in our group of hopefuls to be ready to deliver as early as next year seems bonkers to me.

He's been played on a wing basically all year. He's a free hit. Your wrong.

For GC Sun now Southport player Jacob Dawson had a day out today with 35 disposals, 6 tackles and 13 clearances vs Suns

Averaged 29 disposals (15 contested) 8 clearances and 5 tackles a game in 20 VFL games this year

Only 22… worth a rookie spot perhaps

More upside than a few we have on the list

Will be 30 early 2023, best is well behind him, and he won’t be cheap in terms of TPP even if the Hawks contribute. He’s contracted for 2023 so he’s looking for longevity in his contract if he’s moving. Just not worth bothering with.

Rather put our faith in the kids we already have and add extra development options via the draft.

The WTF is that posters are actually keen to add him.
Yeah, a guy who addresses an area of need is just a guy who addresses an area of need but an unproven kid could be anything. They could even address an area of need!

That we suck in Clearnces and our Best Inside Mid is Badly Injured

We’ve sucked in clearance because our 3 best clearance players (Grundy, Adams, DeGoey) have all missed considerable games. Add that Lipinski hasn’t been the clearance player we’d hoped. Just having DeGoey find some midfield form improved our clearances yesterday against a midfield that was apparently going to spank us.

I also think we’ve got the kids who can step up in 2023.

Happy to see how the kids go in 2023 with another preseason. Macrae, Carmichael, Harrison, McInnes, Murley, and Draper excite me more than the prospect of adding an aging player in decline looking to bolster the super.

We’re in a flag window not a rebuild. Most of those kids are no where near being good afl players, most will spend the year in the vfl.

That article confirms what most of us already know and that is that Mitchell needs to play midfield to be at his damaging best. By the way, he's only 28

In summary the off season looking something like this as a guess; (pick guesses are for next season or future season)

In:
McStay (free)
Hill (3rd)
Frampton (near free)
Mitchell (3rd)
Fiorini (3rd)

Out:
Grundy (1st + player?)
Henry (1st)
Wilson
Roughead
Poulter (3rd)
Brown
Brown
Madgen
Chugg

Would like Henry to stay but what can you do.

That same 2018 WCE midfield slaughtered our mature group the following week so I don’t think it’s as much a youth v maturity argument as you suggest. They were just very good.

THey got the better of our group - they tore the Dees to absolute ribbons. And the blokes torn to shreds were fantastic young players on a complete other level to Macrae and co.

If we had some young superstar mids running around in the vfl you might have an argument. The reality is we don’t, Macrae looks the most likely but at afl level he’s shat the bed.

Not bolstering our midfield this offseason would be moronic.

agree with the sentiment of adding to the midfield but imo it needs to be guys who play a fast game. Mitchell is a slow mover and average kick. We need speed around stoppages.

A midfield with Adams, Lipinski and Michell is very slow. I won't include Pendles because he plays on a different time scale.

I'd prefer to Josh Daicos move into the middle full time and Nick go to the wing.

Yeah, a guy who addresses an area of need is just a guy who addresses an area of need but an unproven kid could be anything. They could even address an area of need!

A guy in the twilight of his career who can’t get a gig in his preferred position at his current club because the coach has decided the kids have gone past him could be cooked, but hey he might just address an area of need and be the savior of the Pies.

It'll be interesting if Grundy is here next year. Also how many games we get out of Adams. Irrespective, if they're there next year and we add Mitchell to that group, we look much stronger at centre clearances.

Sam Mitchell seems to think that even his “damaging best” doesn’t get him into the midfield anymore at Hawthorn.

DOB: 31:05:93

There was lots of media on it earlier in the year. Even David King did a frame by frame analysis of how poor positioning and work-rate we’re in 1 game. The “Sam Mitchell preferred to give kids opportunity” line is just crap. Tom Mitchell just wasn’t good enough to force them out of his preferred spot.
