I think you are probably right about Lyon’s concerns and as more players share their experiences of concussion symptoms more people will have similar concerns. I can’t understand why all tests for concussion are not done off field.
The terrifying thing for me when I met with a specialist after a severe concussion and informed him that I had suffered two other head knocks ( of the “I’m fine” type) in the previous two matches was him telling me: “if you go out and get even a minor whack with your current bruising of the brain (revealed after a scan) there is a possibility of haemorrhage and death.” That put everything in context for me. Perhaps we are focusing too narrowly on CTE type effects and long term impacts and not the more immediate repercussions.
They were talking about brain scans on sen this afternoon & suggesting that all players get a brain scan at the beginning of the year, so they have something to compare it to if/when they get a concussion. It makes sense to me.

The poor kid from the Dogs who had to retire today, who knows what his brain scan would have looked like prior to this latest concussion & brain scan. Was the damage done from that one knock? Or was there damage already there?

It’s such a tough thing to deal with for the sufferer and those trying to diagnose and set up a recovery protocol. CTE was unheard of in my day so they were treated as isolated incidents mostly. If you happened to suffer from anxiety afterwards as many appear to these days, for example, it was in no way seen as related to that incident that happened prior.

I remember seeing all the holiday pics on social media of Murphy asleep whilst he & team mates were away on hols during the off season. They all just probably thought 'silly Nathan, can't take him anywhere, even Europe, he just falls asleep all the time'.. poor bugger.

Now we know why.

Its totally BS.. St Kilda has reportedly offered Weitering $1.5m a year for 8 years. Carlton said he isn't going anywhere and will be very well compensated. We all know what happened the last time they tried to fit 4 decent players into their same salary cap.. I hope it happens again

And they have more than 4 now. Walsh, Cripps, Curnow, McKay, Weitering are genuine stars and then they’ve got high price acquisitions like Cerra, Martin and Williams, with De Konig signing what you’d assume is a relatively significant contract early this year which will need to be bumped up again in 2 years time.

****ed if I know how they’re not well over the cap, their role players must be getting absolute peanuts.

They simply haven’t made Mayne, Wells, Beams and Grundy level howlers.

Murphy sleeps because of concussion? Did you make that up?

Murphy sleeps because of concussion? Did you make that up?
No. I didn't make it up.

Many patients experience post-concussion sleep problems. Some patients experience hypersomnia — in which they sleep far more than normal and may be extra drowsy after a head injury. Others experience insomnia — in which they have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.

Even worse, post-concussion symptoms may not simply go away with time and rest (if that happens, it’s known as post-concussion syndrome, or PCS). If you sustained a mild traumatic brain injury (or even a traumatic brain injury) and find that you can’t sleep the way you did before your injury, you’re not alone.

Soon after injury, around 30% of people report insomnia symptoms. Weeks to months later, 36% of people who have experienced a brain injury show circadian rhythm shifts, 30-70% show continued sleep disruption, and 43-73% of these people report fatigue (Mosti, Spiers, & Kloss 2016).

Sleep disturbances can be part of a vicious cycle that causes your symptoms to worsen over time.

What’s that got to do with social media posts of Murphy asleep?

Don't you have anyone at home to argue with?

I was having a conversation on here with another poster about the effects of concussion and what we now know & how debilitating it can be.

As for the pics on social media, they were taken during the day whilst they're all on holidays, all fit & young, all having fun..and there's poor ol' sleepy Murp who has fallen asleep...again. They'd all have a laugh about it.

Sleep disturbances & changes to your sleeping patterns can be an effect from a brain injury caused by concussion.

Not sure you're across the latest, but Murphy had to retire due to the effects of cte.

I just googled the first sentence of your post above and this is what came up - “Even worse, post-concussion symptoms may not simply go away with time and rest (if that happens, it’s known as post-concussion syndrome, or PCS). You copied it straight from the internet Dr Google

I googled it for the correct information, yes.. I'm not a doctor. I didn't make it up. As if I'd have all that info stored away in my own head.

Sleep disturbances can be an effect/symptom from a brain injury caused by concussion.

Just like the poster who I replied to said anxiety can also be an effect/symptom from a brain injury caused by concussion.

How many arguments have you got going on bf at the moment? Jfc.

Plus they have reportedly offered Hayward $750- $800k for 5 years. Something has to give. I would love the saints to snag Weitering at the reported $1.5 per season. Kill two birds with one stone

Their role players should get peanuts. They pay a lot for their spine and the price is a shallow team and flankers without any weapons.

There is no imaging technique which can show a concussion, or CTE. Brain scans are for bleeding, atrophy, tumors, cysts, that sort of thing.

Sleep disturbances & changes in sleeping patterns, daytime sleeping, etc are all effects/symptoms of cte.

Whether you see the link or not is irrelevant.

Anxiety is too. As are angry outbursts. Depression. Suicidal thoughts.

I'm not making assumptions. It's well documented what the symptoms and effects of cte are.

Post-concussion syndrome is a different condition to CTE, with some of the same constellation of symptoms.

Post-concussion syndrome typically develops from one or more large concussive blows, CTE from prolonged exposure to a high number of smaller, sub-concussive traumas.
