Given that we are debating the best back 6 or 7, I have an honest question:

I see Maynard as a very effective shut down defender, and versatile in that role, but where do you guys see his impact beyond that? I don't see him as great overhead, and not so great in counter-attack (I may be wrong). I honestly think Murphy could go past him.

Just to clarify, I think hes a great player, but impact may be over-rated. I think we see the opposite with Noble (judging by discussions) - a player with limitations but a huge impact in moving the ball for this team.

Also, I think Maynard is best 22, but just think it could be interesting for his role to develop further.

I think Maynard is 1 of the best medium defenders in the league. Can play either as a lockdown defender, can play small or tall, and can be really offensive with his run and kicking from defense. Really good contested mark for his size, just not as flashy as (say) Howe.

As many have mentioned, Maynard is an absolutely AA-level, versatile as hell, medium-back. Murphy was a very pleasant improver last year, but he's no Bruzz.

It still looks like Murphy OR Frampton for me, as long as Howe is motoring along.

If Geelong (& other teams) end up playing a smaller, mobile forward line, then Frampton misses.

Moore, Howe, Maynard, Quaynor, Noble, plus at least one rotating mid, makes SIX; Murph or Billy makes SEVEN.

I'm not sure how they both play unless Moore or Howe is missing, or we're playing one of the 'stack of talls' forward lines.

Thanks for the feedback. All true. He is an excellent medium defender.
I'm not as crash hot on his creative play, despite his lovely left boot, but overall I think he is excellent as I said at the start.

Yeah, I appreciate your balanced perspective. We might not agree but respect for not being all or nothing.

Yeah, Murphy more of a third tall, so long term its Howe's position he is best suited to, while we have the extra talls needed for a proper defence. He aint replacing a run and carry half back. He's the last player picked in the back 7, and so is frampton so its one of the two, not both in the short term.

A potential lack of Geelong big forwards might dictate that.

I’d be very surprised if Frampton doesn’t play and I think Murphy deserves to retain his spot. As I said, someone has to move from the back 7 cohort to accommodate Frampton. As I also said, that’ll be either Pendles or Nick Daicos moving into the midfield, or Noble moving to the VFL. I’m of the opinion that it’ll be Noble. Happy for others to think otherwise. We’ll know Thursday.

or Starts in the VFL for Frampton

Fair enough. That plan will involve all of Frampton, Moore, Howe, Murphy and Maynard. You can't do that without shifting the balance of our defence. I suppose you could shift Bruzzy or Howe into more of a transition role, but even then it will still change the balance of our defence to lesser transition, so I'll be surprised if you're right.

Carmichael is vying for Lippa's vacant role with WHE/Reef
I think it will be Nick and/or Pendles who slots into Lippas role.

Last year Lippa started forward at centre square stoppage and then switched with Jordy as he drifted ahead of the footy. That'd be the perfect role for Nick whilst his body is still developing, but we might not be able to afford to lose his transition from defence. It'd also be a great role for Pendles - assuming Mitchell pushes him out of the centre square.

Someone needs to push Nick out of that HB role. To valuable as a goalkicking/assisting midfielder.

Pendles or WHE and we also have Markov.

I think that role has already been accounted for with Tom Mitchell’s addition changing up the midfield rotation. In the pre season matches Lipinski played mostly as a high half forward that would rotate on the wing which was WHE’s role last season. I’d imagine he walks straight back in with ease.

I hope we win. In times past the previous season’s GF winner suffered from the infamous hangover however in this more professional era players often retain their form and fitness. I read somewhere that Geelong had a detailed plan for the entire season last year round by round. In effect they took a strategic approach. Not sure how many AFL clubs have that degree of planning sophistication.

I'm expecting Pendles to float between different roles this year, depending on who's out. Whether it's the Lipinski role from last year, or what they had ear-marked for Lipinski this year, I think Pendles will be able to slot into it.

Even with Lippa and Ginni out, the new recruits to me mean that WHE still misses out.

Ginny covers Hill, Lippa - Mitchell, McStay comes in for Johnson and there’s likely only one spot for Frampton or Murphy. I can’t see WHE missing out unless Carmichael is rated higher.

WHE would make the newer recruits look silly with his running power. Speed plus endurance.
Runs opponents into the ground.
Elite for KM's a game. Around 15 km a few times.
Perhaps we get that last Quarter advantage wearing teams down?
Which new recruits ?
Wrighty just said Reef needs to build his tank. Carmichael at best a sub. Allan needs to go through the VFL.
Anyone else you're thinking of?
WHE best 22 right now. As is Noble.

How about Reef, Macrae, Carmichael and friends do their apprenticeship in the VFL for a little more. Unfair to Carmichael as he's done well and Macrae is slowly getting there.
This is what the great teams of the past like Hawthorn did.
Long VFL apprenticeships.
Carve it up and you'll get your chance.

Do some of you even watch football?
Wanting to just turf WHE and Noble is madness. Murphy has also been really good for us.

This is what Fly thinks about some of these comments..

Good call, but I think Reef will come in.

It's just that we've got some depth year, so if we have a pretty full list without injuries, a couple of pretty good players will miss out.

Judging by recent interviews w Pendles and Naicos, it maybe sounds like they’ll rotate the same spot with each other in HB and midfield. With Naicos moving forward in spurts to either shake a tag and/or if we’re falling behind in scoring.

I’ll be annoyed if we don’t bring Carmicheal in for the Lipinski role. It’s a natural fit. Even if he’s our super sub. Just do it Pies.

Fair enough mate but these young blokes need time to develop.
As a sub I totally agree for one to come in.
Depending if we need to fill a need with injury. Roll of the dice who comes in for the first bounce.

At best as a sub although I have Carmichael a whisker ahead of him.
He's also shown a bit last year.
I think it's borderline between WHE, Carmichael and Reef. But just going on practice match selections, roles and form. I'm betting on Reef in, with one of the others as sub.

WHE will never be sub. At least not just yet. Carmichael has improved on indurance running but another pre season he'll be primed. Expecting him to play several games. Reef is superfast but needs to improve his tank.
I like the look of both of these players. Edward though is my favourite. Hopefully he comes good before the end of the year.
He will be a weapon next season as will Reef and Carmichael.

After reviewing our lineup above for the 2022 prelim…

Probably guaranteed ins/outs for Cats:

AJ<>McStay
Ginnivan<>Hill
Bianco<>TA
Lipinski<>Titch

Murphy I’d prefer to keep in, or Frampton comes in depending if Hawkins miraculously comes good.

WHE probably stays in cos we’ll want to field the most mature lineup possible for the first 4 rounds.

Sub - Reef or JC.
