Makes sense. He's an experienced player. If he's on the list he should probably play. I don't know why they didn't keep him at half-back though and release one of the other smaller defenders. Maybe take N Daicos's position.
Looks like he was playing at half forward in match sim. The role lippa seems to start with. But no McCreery, so maybe that affects things

There are number of possibilities, but I don’t see how that validates your “ these peanut journalists have no clue” comment.
Most of the spots in the 23 would be relatively fixed, what i postulated was that when you boil it down there were only really a small number positions that were up for dispute…the journalist, I think like most of them don’t watch all if any games and probably never played football. Leaving Murphy out of the side shows that for me. The proof will be in the ‘pudding’ as they say come round 1.

I think he got more wrong than right.

Who gives way if not Murphy? He himself sad they were competing for the same position.

For what it's worth, but round 5 I think Frampton will be playing VFL.
As I’ve said I don’t think it’s necessarily Frampton or Murphy, they could both play. With Maynard, Pendles, IQ spending more time up the ground. Also if Hawkins doesn’t play do we even need a second tall?

If I’m a defensive coach, I’m looking at ability to defend as well as rebound, Murphy is our best defender…can play tall and small. He plays for mine.

It's the week before starting and all through club
all the newbies are flying or at least that's the rub.
The try-outs are played with a semblance of care
But has all of their talent and skill been laid bare?

McStay seems a cert to be standing out front
No Ginni means Bobby is well worth the punt.
Billy's the one where there's question and doubt
It seems he or Murphy are bound to miss out.

Cause out on the boards there is such a clatter
Frampton or Murphy? I've seen more of the latter
Nathan is tough, Nathan is brave
Two snippets of Frampton are not worth a rave.

Our backline last year was a respectable presence
Recruiting more clout by the club was the essence
A place in defence has emerged as the crunch
But a backline with Murphy fits in with my hunch.

Go Pies!

Unpopular opinion. It's not like-for-like but Murph has shown a lot more than IQ in the pre-season. IQ is faster, more agile and built like a rigid exterior portaloo however ball in hand he's been fumbly and a bit slow in his decision-making. Murph seems more considered and confident if a little slower. Given we're at the start of the season and we have the opportunity to wrench a couple of Ws in our favour, I'd be happier with IQ as a sub tbh.

Happy to be pilloried but I know what I see.

IQ will lift once the season starts. A very important cog in our team.
I also like Murphy. Best 22 for me.

IQ definitely best 22. Along with Murph. He was brilliant last year. When the real stuff starts we’ll see the real deal im sure

When he's on, yes. And I don't want to bag him because he's one of my faves. I just haven't seen the spark in him so far. Maybe you're right and it will come soon and when the season kicks off in proper.

Mock Teams

Friday, March 17

Geelong v Collingwood, MCG, 7.40pm AEDT

GEELONG

B:
Jed Bews, Sam De Koning, Zach Guthrie
HB: Jake Kolodjashnij, Tom Stewart, Zach Tuohy
C: Isaac Smith, Patrick Dangerfield, Max Holmes
HF: Brad Close, Jeremy Cameron, Brandan Parfitt
F: Tyson Stengle, Ollie Henry, Gryan Miers
Foll: Rhys Stanley, Cam Guthrie, Tom Atkins
I/C: Mark Blicavs, Mark O'Connor, Jack Bowes, Gary Rohan
EMERG: Esava Ratugolea, Tanner Bruhn, Ollie Dempsey, Jon Ceglar

NEW: Ollie Henry, Jack Bowes, Tanner Bruhn
UNAVAILABLE: Tom Hawkins (foot), Mitch Duncan (calf), Jack Henry (foot)

NOTES: While Hawkins and Duncan are yet to be ruled out of round one, they have missed both practice matches and are facing a race to be fit in time. Chris Scott may choose not to risk them off an interrupted preparation. Henry looks set to face his old side, while Bowes and Bruhn have impressed across the summer and could get the nod first up. One of them could be the sub. Blicavs played everywhere last year, so we wait to see what the Cats do with the veteran utility in 2023. Ratugolea has transformed into a key defender in the past 12 months and will come under strong consideration after featuring in both practice matches. Rohan returned in Brisbane last week and should be good to go in round one. – Josh Gabelich

COLLINGWOOD

B:
Isaac Quaynor, Darcy Moore, Brayden Maynard
HB: Scott Pendlebury, Jeremy Howe, Nick Daicos
C: Steele Sidebottom, Tom Mitchell, Josh Daicos
HF: Taylor Adams, Dan McStay, Beau McCreery
F: Jamie Elliott, Brody Mihocek, Bobby Hill
Foll: Darcy Cameron, Jordan De Goey, Jack Crisp
I/C: Billy Frampton, John Noble, Mason Cox, Will Hoskin-Elliott
EMERG: Nathan Murphy, Reef McInnes, Josh Carmichael, Oleg Markov

NEW: Tom Mitchell, Dan McStay, Bobby Hill, Billy Frampton
UNAVAILABLE: Jack Ginnivan (suspended), Pat Lipinski (shoulder), Nathan Kreuger (shoulder), Charlie Dean (foot)

NOTES: With the threat of Tom Hawkins getting up for round one, Frampton gets the nod ahead of Murphy. The West Australian has been ahead of Murphy all summer, but only just. Craig McRae enjoyed success pairing Cameron and Cox together in 2022 and should start the season with the same plan. The four players the club signed in October all look destined to land a spot against the Cats. Adams has spent time across half-forward over the pre-season and is expected to divide his time between there and midfield this season. McInnes has made a strong push in the past month and will be close. – Josh Gabelich

We'll see -- you're right but it's also the trend of the day. But in any case, Nuaghton, Ugle-Hagan, and Darcy is a frightening combination. Compare the talent level to our tall forwards, who are good and I love them, but still.
Doggies might be back in contention in 2023. Liam Jones is what they have needed for years. A tall key defender. They have always been one short down there.

Tiger loving Ralph wouldn't have spent a single moment watching Collingwood pre season, so take his best 22 with a grain of salt.
Except to comment on how DeGoey needed to be suspended for a sling tackle.
I detest Jon Ralph. Don't rate him as any sort of football analyst and think he is biased against certain players and clubs and stirs the pot.

And justifiably so. You've said it yourself, not like for like. They play different roles and bring different elements to the defensive whole.

I also think you're underselling IQ's preseason. He's been solid rather than outstanding but I doubt that's enough to justify his omission.
