Oooooh good one - 2014 preseason game v Richmond (Roos' first game).

Jay Kennedy-Harris bobbing up for a few goals, including one where David Astbury kicked the ground instead of the ball.

Think it was Jon Ralph who called JKH his favourite player in the AFL. Roosy walked off the ground to people bowing down to him and chanting his name.

In a way, it was the day our club was reborn. In other, more accurate way, it was a preseason game where fans so starved off success nearly blew the roof off Marvel (at the time, Etihad) Stadium.
I remember playing Essendon in a preseason game at Docklands and their supporters doing the same thing to Hird (bowing down to him). A very different result for that mob 😂

Whats your earliest memory of supporting Melbourne? For some reason as a kid I decided they were my team on grand final day in 1988. Cant remember anything from that game at all other than Hawthorn flogged us, but I do remember early Darren Bennett kicking set shots outside 50 with ease, he was my first favourite Melbourne player before Jako came along, **** he could launch a ball.
First game I remember going to is R1 1988, I remember walking around the back of the old southern stand while Tony Campbell dobbed one of his 7 goals for the day. Garry Lyon had a day out too apparently.

I'm pretty sure I went to games in 1987 but can't remember any, but my earliest MFC memory is being at the Melbourne Show on Prelim Final day 1987 with mum, my aunt and my cousin while dad was at the game with my uncle. All day we were asking people what's the score and all day we were told Melbourne's up. Then as we were leaving someone told us Hawthorn won, couldn't believe it.

Edit - Actually I do have an earlier memory, my family listening to the radio in the study on my sister's birthday and going crazy when they found out we beat the Dogs and made the finals on 1987.

Anyone mention Jordan Gysberts getting two Rising Star nominations in his first handful of games and then dropping off the face of the earth soon after?

Sam Blease managed this too!

Not sure if it's been mentioned, maybe I already mentioned it but I remember melbourne beating Collingwood in a pre season game and thinking couch was going to be a solid player. Just shows pre season means jack shit.

Still remember that first game that season at the mcg against Brisbane just after Jim Stynes passed away. Game was even then Brisbane flogged us after half time. A lot of the commentary in the media was that the emotion of the game affected the players. The next week we lost to west coast by 108 and the reality hit, nothing had changed at all. I think by round 6 it was clear the team was in strife, the players had no confidence and people were already saying get rid of neeld. I think I defended neeld until about round 10.

Am I remembering correctly that Sam Blease spent some time on Geelong’s list after his playing for Melbourne? Rings a vague bell, and there seemed to be a while there where Geelong had some kind of constitutional requirement to provide shelter to ex-demons.

Shame it didn’t work the other way around so much, though we did have Shannon Byrnes for a bit. But it would have been nice in 2014 Paul Roos could have called Selwood or similar.

Paul Roos: You are obliged to Play for the Melbourne Football Club
Selwood: okay. When do I start?

I hate Marvel but I disagree. The acoustics in there make a 30k crowd sound like 70k.

No many memories of Waverley but what I do remember was walking through a giant car park and sitting in an empty stadium in icy rain.
Most memories of Waverley were of us getting belted by Hawthorn, freezing our arses off while sitting on uncomfortable seats that gave you splinters if you were unlucky and being stuck in the car park for an hour after the game.

But there were some good memories, Prelim 88, Elimination Final 89, beating the Pies on ANZAC Day 91(?) with Darren Cuthbertson running amok (think he kicked 7 goals 2 weeks in a row), belting the Hawks in R2 94 and the Pies a few weeks later by less than a goal. Oh and Farmers goal of the year circa 98.

Sitting in the red seats in the old Olympic Stand and there was always a guy with a mo wearing a Melbourne jumper a size too small storming up and down the stairs trying to get the supporters to join him in on his "Melbourne clap clap clap " chants.
I always sat there (until someone decided to move all general admission riff-raff from ground floor seats on the wing) and I remember him well.

I enjoyed the implied rivalry between the official cheer squad and his ad-hoc endeavour.

I believe I was at that game also, Farmer kicked a goal off the ground from about 20m out in the right forward pocket if im recalling correctly. Went to most games that year, the Wiz show was the best show in town.
Only surpassed by Jakovichs 2nd half of 1991. 50 goals in 7 games or so I think (after already kicking 60 in the ressies that year).

Start of 2008 season
loss vs hawthorn (Premiers) 104 points
loss vs bulldogs (preliminary final) 95 points
loss vs Geelong (runners up) 30 points.

We were shit, but to be fair a lot of teams would have lost all three.
I remember going into that season thinking we were a legit chance in R1 😂😂

People seem to forget that round 19 belting from Geelong in 08 after the 2011 one

People also seem for forget the North Melbourne belting in 2013 compared to the earlier one by Essendon that year

Congrats, your memories have been jogged

I remember the 08 game, still remember melbourne having a chance to kick their first goal only for simon Buckley to decide to bounce the ball when it was soaking wet. Regardless 116 point belting is nothing compared to 186. The fact it's another 70 points off is why it will always be remembered.

I remember thinking how excited I was for Isaac Weetra to debut round 1 2008 against the Hawks.

Based off absolutely no evidence of having never seen him play prior, I thought he was going to be an absolute gun.

I remember the 08 game well, I'd met a girl at work who was a Cats supporter and decided to get tickets to go to the game together. Scoreless and down by 50 points at quarter time she wondered how I could support such a loser team. Now we're married and our kids go for the Demons too, lucky we had the 21 flag because seeing the Cats salute again in 22 before we won one would've been a bitter pill.

Okay - I'll show my age - late 1960's - as a young kid Dad took me into the Melbourne rooms to get some autographs. Had the record in my hand and was getting players to sign on the blank sections. Gave it to a guy called Ross Dillion who I remembered wore really thick glasses. Handed him the record and without his glasses on he signed right in the middle of the Herald ad so could not read his name at all. And funnily enough as a kid I could care less. Just wrapped he took the time to autograph for me.
Reminds me of going to one of the family days in the early 90s and asking the same player for their autograph about 3 times because without their jumpers/numbers they all looked the same. He seemed pretty annoyed the last time which is when I twigged I must have asked him already. Think it was someone like John Howat.

Also remember as a kid sitting in the red seats at the 88 SF down near the bench and as the interchange players did their warm ups around the boundary I yelled out to Andy Lovell "go Lovell" and got a bit of a dirty look. Realised later it was probably Todd Viney, both rocking the 80s bleach mullet look.

  • Brock McLean's first game
  • Absolutely teaming down with rain in the 2nd half
  • 2nd last win at Subi, went home empty handed for the next 17 or so visits after this (until Tom McDonald, you genius...)
  • Kicked 6.7 to nothing in the last quarter, peter Vardy kicking 3 in 3 minutes including a miracle from the boundary line
  • I was thankfully at the Subiaco end of the ground (right of screen) about 11 rows back, the people in row 8 were getting absolutely soaked whilst we were dry

Sorry for the multiple posts but this game sticks in my mind for Vardys goals and McLean kicked one on the run as well I think from the far pocket going to left of screen?

Anyway the reason it sticks out is because after one of Vardys goals my dad jumped off the couch in celebration and badly strained his calf, we thought he'd done his achilles he was in that much pain.

Pre season. Probably the day a bunch of supporters around that age realised pre season meant **** all
Pre season meant a bit to me when it was nab cup because it was the only hope i felt at maybe winning and progressing at something at the time

But i exactly get what you mean. I remember in 2012 we rolled Brissy and Gold coast up at Carrara in those weird three way half games. Then when came back to docklands and beat Collingwood who actually put a decent line up out from memory. In year 11 at the time with a Collingwood mate i was giving it to him and thinking this Neeld guy must coach alright to knock off last years grand finalists

I hate they got rid of the pre season cup, so badly wanted to win that when I was young. Getting to see a mix of kids play but with actual pressure on the game was enjoyable. It was classic us that in my lifetime anyway we never got near winning that either
