Either you have a severe confirmation bias or you haven't worked for a professionally run company. Probably both.
I have worked for many hugely successful, multi national publicly listed and private companies as well as government departments. Please don't tell me where I have and haven't worked.

In our case I think hiring from within is self-serving - maintaining the boys club, don't want any uppity outsiders coming in and blowing the whistle - rather than in the best interests of our club.

Don't think he was. He was bagging the placed you worked for - not you.

Oh and eat a snickers. You're not you when you're hungry. :p

That all hired exclusively from within, didn't head hunt or hire outside elite, and when they did failed at it. Seems legit.

Yes I get that. But as I said in this thread earlier, all businesses and companies I've worked in over the last almost 4 decades, promoted from within in almost all cases. It was only the odd occasion when someone could be "poached" - and on those occasions? Internal appointment would have been shit loads better! :p

I agree with you about promoting within. The company I worked for would always look inside. However over the thirty years I was there it slowly changed. I remember the last MD appointment. It was a foregone conclusion as to who would get the appointment but the powers to be (the Americans) decided that they didn't want the best available within the company they simply wanted the best. So yes 20years ago you are would be right but more recently companies do look outside.....at least for their senior positions.

What an eerie read...

Just in case, nobody start positive threads about the following:

Danger
Tex
Sloane
The Crouch Bros.
Noble

And as was the argument back then - EVERY club, company and business looks to promote from within first.

Not really.

why do you think executive head hunters are in business? You can find someone "suitable" internally if you really want to, if you talk yourself into it, but if you want the best you get experts to find what you need.

Succession planning matters less the higher up the ladder you go I reckon
