when Bowes goes somewhere else, It’ll be the clubs fault because we didn’t try hard enough, or our management is s**t, or it’s Trevor’s and/or Toddy’s fault, or the pieman or any one of the other criticisms thrown around.

Jack Nicholson Yes GIF

I'm already penning my email to the club describing what the microwave is doing to my membership card..

Just being realistic 😎

I’m also cognisant of the likely reaction here when Bowes goes somewhere else. It’ll be the clubs fault because we didn’t try hard enough, or our management is s**t, or it’s Trevor’s and/or Toddy’s fault, or the pieman or any one of the other criticisms thrown around.

That’ll be despite that we may not have ever been in the running

No inside info, just being negative

Two things :

1) We have to convince Bowes to come here. Have a read of this board and the prevailing view is we are heading into a significant period of time at the foot of the ladder. It’s a justified view. Like it or not, other clubs hold more appeal.
2) The deal as it’s being reported seems too good to be true. It’s hard to imagine the Suns want nothing in return but even if that is the case, clubs will offer something as it’ll turn into a bidding war. If we offered our future 2nd for Bowes and 7, that’s still an extraordinarily good deal. Not hard to envisage a club like Geelong or Melbourne or Sydney offering a future 1st

I’ll concede there’s a possibility we convince Bowes as the WA lifestyle is closer to what he’s used to in Queensland than what Victoria would be. If that happens, great, but my positivity doesn’t extend to believing the deal gets done without something going back

The season we’ve had, I just can’t see how a deal this good falls in our lap. That’d be too much like good luck when we’ve had none all year

The Suns do want something in return. Future picks for points as they have some very good academy kids next year.

IMO Bowes will be convinced by 1. getting opportunity to play at the top level and 2. by $$$$. Lifestyle is important but that comes 3rd.

Being a big, well resourced club helps as well.

I agree they’ll want something in return but that hasn’t been reported on and has resulted in some posters thinking there isn’t anything going back

We’ll find out soon enough I guess

I think the interesting part of the Bowes deal is how Adelaide and Rankine fit in with it.
On one hand Suns are saying we don’t want to lose Rankine and can pay him $650k but crows out bid and will probably land him.

Then a few weeks go by and suns are offering up pick 7 and Bowes on apparently $800k a year.

Seems a strange world where a player is being given away with pick 7 while one is leaving and the club is asking for pick 5 back.

Surely if the suns had offered Bowes up earlier and maybe some other spud for pick 7 and say 25 they would have seen the interest in the deal had the coin to pay Rankine a fraction more and keep him.
If you were the crows and could convince Bowes to come it’s simply Rankine Bowes for free, you just have to pay the salary. Maybe swap pick 5&7 🤣

I wonder if we could offer Bowes 3 years for 2M (the extra length/flexibilty may be attractive to both parties) and then trade pick #2 for him, #5 and #7?

Vardy, sweetener.

No Club is going to seriously look at taking Vardy, would be cancer in the locker room, very disloyal and would sell game plans and strategies to the media.

Why trade #2 if it’s not being asked for? A big price to pay for a player we probably don’t especially want and his large salary.

The fact seems to be that we don’t really know what GC want, where Bowes might want to go etc., but I certainly wouldn’t be offering up #2 lightly.

Are there any clubs with list management teams you dread dealing with?

Conversely are there clubs with list management teams where our previous dealings has lead to fairer future discussions? I’m thinking of Sydney following the pick swap and back a few years ago.

Some people are notoriously more difficult to work with as they always seem to want to win. Others understand a neutral result is actually a win

If we get pick 7 out of GC, then we would have picked up Bowes 800K contract, I find it hard to then think we would have enough cap space to additionally afford Jackson who, reportedly is to be seeking a similar sized contract himself.

It's one or the other IMO.

No world, in which, we get both.
As others have pointed out, you can finesse Bowes’ contract. Get creative.

You couldn’t give him additional years and spread the money out? Front load or back end some contracts? If, as a club, this situation would completely stump us, it’s folding time.

Where does the coin come from in regards to our TPP.

Jackson around 850
Bowes around 450 .... should he decide to take a massive hair cut

So where does the 1.3 million come from ??????, that to me is the major problem.

We need to get up with salary cap space being an asset

Pies doing the salary dump cap a couple of years ago came across as insane but look how they have rebounded

Cats have been able to work it brilliantly with their lifestyle and lower cost of living

Both Adelaide clubs should be able to do so with house prices being so much lower

Once the Suns get into a winning mode, the Gold Coast has a lot of attractions that should mean a lower go home

What Freo and West Coast need to do is work out how to manage it to advantage.

Our keep at all costs approach with Gaff and Guv looks flawed
All good points. One other aspect is the constant travel. I could imagine many players (WA or not) might be put off by it. (Pavlich and Kade Simpson played about 350 and 340 games respectively; Pavlich travelled about 840K kms and Simpson about 120K kms. Gotta make a difference in rehab and family relationships but also what an absolute pain sitting in airports or on planes every fortnight.)

To that end I think the WA teams should be pushing for
1. all trips to be for two games on a six day break. So, WCE go to Syd and play both teams; or to Melb and play two teams. (Similarly, non-WA teams could come to WA and play both teams.) and,
2. no games in Tas (unless a direct flight) as it means two flights. I can't imagine non-WA teams being happy playing in Geraldton or Albany i.e. two flights.

Guess Bowes if he did actually look to come west would only be an option if Jackson nominated Cockburn.

Never forget Cockburn got Johnson and Brodie basically for free off them last year.

Never underestimate the incompetence of Fold Coast.
Cost them this years 2nd and 4th round picks - so 32 and 68

Still a good deal no question but not free
