North take Wardlaw.

Gws give want Cadman so give us 3 and 15 for 2 and 33.

Hawks want Sheezel and trade us 6 + 7 for 3 and 26

6 + 7 = Phillipou and Mackenzie/Busslinger
15 = Hewett
20 = Keeler/Hotton

Why was it introduced? Because America do it. How did it all work without it? No problem. Just made it easier for players to do what they like. Your draft hand should be your draft hand.
Well it didn’t always work out ‘no problem’

I believe we got shafted in the Ebert trade because we couldn’t get any future value from port. So instead of getting a late second, much prefer a future second as an example.

Carlton prob would have preferred to add a future first to pick 3 and 20 instead of JK who was a top 5 pick himself. They didn’t want to lose him and he didn’t want to leave.

Just examples of how it could work back in the day but hey, if you don’t like it, fair enough.

Why was it introduced?

It was brought in in response to changes to the father son/academy process:

Dillon said most clubs had supported this future trading model.

The AFL's player movement advisory group initially discussed future trading as part of its discussions around the bidding process for players nominated as father-son or club academy selections ... a number of clubs argued that teams looking to match bids for such players were effectively able to trade future selections by going into deficit under the bidding system, an option that gave them an advantage over other clubs.

GWS and Lions just trades

pick 15 for pick 21 and a GWS future R2

1664940744290.png

Assuming a pick around 25 in 2022, that is the 500 premium most expected

That means Doggies will not get 15 for Dunkley

GWS now sitting on:
Pick 2 12 15 and 19 with 18 for Bruhn likely

Surely they will want to trade up

Pick 2 will get gets you 12 15 and 19. Not sure I would do it as I want one of the picks inside 9

Our 1st Pick has value, just think it'll have more value on Draft night.

Totally agree. I'd keep that bad boy tucked away for sure until draft night.

I'm more so talking about the 26, (33), and 39 we've got on top of 2 and 20 we should ideally be cashing in.

Can't do that however, until the Rioli trade hurrys up and gets done and we know exactly what we've got.

They're just old school. He probably regularly complains about "the music of today" too.

Why is it you feel that something you like everyone else should like? I don't like the system, whats the problem with that? Where can I voice I don't like it? Guess where, a footy forum contract, draft and trading thread.

PS todays music is crap lol

GWS just hoarding first rounders to groom more talent for Richmond, Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon in 2027?

Such a shit cycle the league is basically stuck in. Well shit if you follow a non-Vic team anyway.

Yep, keep Pick 2 until draft night, look at trading up with the other picks during trade millennium.

True, and there is a significant amount of paying Jackson on potential also (wage plus trade) - of course the ceiling is higher!

But yeah, I wouldn't take 13, Nominally 13/14 in 2023 plus nominally 20 in 2023 (noting this one can only get worse, no way can it become a better pick).

TBF though, there is definitely a chance that Freo's future 1st plus that Nth PP gets a pick in the 5-10 range in this draft. Maybe Melbourne are happy to take on that risk/benefit in lieu of a top-10 pick (i.e. guaranteed 13 this year, and try to trade Freo's F1st plus North F2nd PP for an early pick this year).

Maybe Port bite at that for their pick 8? Gives them 2 x 1sts (future - theirs and Freo's) for Dunkley, then their F2nd to us for Rioli (very unlikely we would get the Nth PP I think). They should get something back for the Dunkley deal also (either 30, or the dogs future 2nd... and one of those might become the Rioli trade also)

Would end up being 8+13 for Jackson which is about right?
Erh, Dunkley if off to the Lions not Port

Nah I don't really have a problem with you not liking the current system, I just think you may have an antiquated view of the sport and recruitment. It's like thinking players are more respected if they play all their games at 1 club - I think it's not really relevant anymore.

I’d be interested to hear what you think we can do to force Port to offer a better deal

As it stands, we don’t know what they’ve offered, if anything. Rioli is uncontracted so we can’t control where he goes nor can we force Port to offer something

Our one bargaining chip is the nuclear option of refusing to agree to a trade and forcing Rioli into the PSD. In that instance we get zilch

All we can do for now is what we’ve been doing and that is reinforcing what we believe to be his trade value
A third rounder and Fredericks

A third rounder and Fredericks

A pick we won't use and a player that would otherwise be delisted?

Hardly.

People want 2 things this trade period.

1. Get adequate compensation for Rioli

&2. Improve our draft hand by bundling the extra picks we've got, given they're worth a fair bit in points value and we'll only make 4 selections in the ND.

That's it. Nobody is asking for miracles from ROB tbh. Unfortunately the Rioli compensation has taken a hit, whilst one option of a pick upgrade is likely gone.

Still plenty of time left for him to do something. Sitting and doing nothing though, just leaves us with a semi lame draft hand we aren't maximising. I don't want that, why would anyone?
1. Can’t accept an offer that had yet to made or force Port to make one

2. GWS made a better offer and it’s not one I would have wanted us to match

But yeah let’s just assume he’s sitting back scoffing down pies and doing nothing because that fits the preconceived notion of what he does

We'd have to be pretty keen on that 21 pick that Brisbane have just picked up. Having the 1st 2 selections on the 2nd day of draft would put us is in a great position to firstly get the best slider from day 1. Also score the best offer from a club keen to grab a player they thought wouldn't be available after the 1st round. Could set us up for a decent future pick.

Third and next year's third? for this year's second? I know, I know, the superdraft, but they need their points eh?

I am very much up to date with the modern game. I don't think it's the same sport I grew up with but I understand what as happened and who it is marketed to now. I might be old fashion with recruiting as I still believe in recruit the best player, not the youngest player.
Anyway this is not the forum for this and I respect others view even if mine is different, just not going to cop the old man staring at cloud crap as thats just someone saying that they are not happy you disagreed with them.
All the best

Yep, got my wires crossed.

I think those picks are enough for Dunkley, but aren't getting the JHF deal done.

I have no idea how port are going to get the JHF deal done...
Two firsts and a player, probable Bonner: carn the Shin Bonners

Old mate said "The best thing WC can do right now is do nothing".

I debated that and argued why we (Rohan) can't just "do nothing" as we're not maximising our draft hand if we do.

Don't get ya pacemaker in a twist Dad.

To summarise list spots as at today, we are as follows:

Senior list - 35 (Max 38)
  • Winder and Witherdon out of contract
  • Rioli likely to go
  • Jones moved from rookie list
  • Hunt joining as a FA

Rookie List - 3 (Max 6)
- West and Trew without a contract

We had 45 on the list (Sheppard already out) and a need to take 3 picks at the ND for a total of 42

7 off the lists - JK, Redden, Nelson, Strnadica, Joyce, Naish and Dixon
1 likely to leave - Rioli

To take 5 picks in the ND and 1 rookie/SPD, we need to move on at least 2 more.
I would also like to move Foley and Langdon to the rookie list otherwise we are limited to only 3 picks at the main draft
