I think we do need that type. A hybrid mid/fwd who wins ground ball and contested ball. We are screaming out for that type.

It's just whether we can overcome his lack of class (on the footy field, but probably equally relevant off the field!) and his average/poor kicking.

He's not going to be our next Shuey, but maybe our next Hutchings.

As long as you ignore his abominable kicking.
People in the crowd might have to wear helmets.

A hard pass from me.

We have a lot of crap players.

An ok player is better.

I believe we were interested in SPP late last trade period but it fell through.

I’m kinda meh on SPP. Would prefer Georgie.

To be fair he was pretty good in 2022. Definitely his best year to date and he's still only 24. (25 in Jan)

I'd be more than happy to get him over. Rotate him through the middle and HFF.

Could this look okay

Eagles Give: Rioli, Pick 2, pick 20

Get Pick 8, North future 1st

North Give : JBH, Future 1st

Get pick 2, 20, 33 Port Future 1st, Sinn

Port Give: 8, 33, Future 1st, Sinn

Get JHF and Rioli.
Slightly fairer for Port - they cough up an extra pick 33 and a handy player, from the ludicrous deal that was reported. But now North are being shafted by giving up two prime assets (JHF, 2023 R1). On the other hand, we do pretty well out of it. Let's leak it to the media.

thats shit for us. actually worse than cooneys crap

Make port trade for Rioli on his own or shop him.

If it’s future picks we are after then GWS is the club to talk to they will likely have at least there’s and the tigers 1st round plus could go after the cats (Bruhn) if they thought they could on trade for pick 2.

GWS could hold pick 3,12,15 & 19
GWS Future 1st, Tigers Future 1st, Cats Future 1st and Pies Future 2nd

Plenty to work with to strike a deal for both clubs

Do we know how many picks GWS will take to the draft?

If we trade them Pick 2, they will definitely take it to the draft as no chance they will slide back down and pick up more picks.

Would something like 2 and 20 for 3 and 19 work out better since we can then control start of day 2?

Cal Twomey mentioned on trade radio we made enquiries about Dan Houston and were immediately shut down. I don't think we need Dan (very good player) but it seems we are looking at all options, even if that means players over more picks.

Start dangling some money on a carrot infront of some Port players we are keen on, probably leads to nothing but it's not going to hurt and if the shoe was on the other foot.....

I could have sworn Houston was older... apparently 25 (turning 26 next year).

I'm not surprised we asked about him, but it does show the thinking a little bit (and I like what they seem to have recognised).

Our back-half to forward-half transition is/was terrible. There are 2 obvious ways to fix it, have it down there less (midfield), or improve your transition players (hunt, plus trying to get Houston).

Obviously a mix of both is ideal, and it would seem we are targeting midfield in the draft if we are willing to take our first around pick 8 - so it does seem a clear acknowledgement that along with improving the gameplan we also need to upgrade the cattle to become a better side (it would be easy to say we have Chesser, Hough, Cole coming back, Duggan injury free, Bazzo - all down back to improve us. But ideally some of those guys move up the ground and none have shown yet that they fix our ball movement issues).

Shep reckons Ginbey is the target if we’re looking to trade back to 8.

If correct: That would please me, I rate Ginbey highly.

Would also surprise me too, as Ginbey has some “James Hunt” about the way he plays the game , an attribute and characteristics ( sadly ) not generally valued by The PieMan & Co.

Sorry for the dense question, I haven't been following along, but...

Why would Port trade away the Amon compensation pick? I know that West Coast have claimed that pick 27 wasn't enough for Rioli... but realistically, that was probably posturing. Pick 27 seemed the best option and now it's gone.
It's not a dense question its a logical question.

But Port are seemingly being Port and trade away the picks that would be suitable then throw their hands up in the end and say "take it or leave it, this is all we have" sort of approach.

To be fair they have bigger fish to fry right now with JHF so are likely focused on getting that done first before they get the Rioli deal done (unless it all merges together but i'd rather it not).

Agree.
Why are we beig pulled into a North/Port threeway to help Port.

I don't agree with splitting pick 2 but if thats what the Eagles want then just split it ourselves as a direct deal with someone.

Then do the Rioli deal seperately.

Doing a 3-way just means someone gets shafted, and it's almost certainly going to be us.

Agreed.

Who cares if the JHF deal collapses, it's not our problem.

Get the Rioli deal sorted, hit the draft with Pick 2 and see what offers we get on the night, and see if we can bundle our 2nd/3rd rounders up for something better.

Simples.

Yep, if the choice is to get shafted on a deal for pick 2 (and Rioli), or get shafted on a deal just for Rioli - take the standalone deal option.

I'd say it is Port, not us, trying to tie the two together - but at the end of the day that is for them to work out how to satisfy all 3 parties. I think North will be easily persuaded (pick 2 plus a B22 player is reasonable), but we should absolutely hold firm on getting max value for our 2 assets.

Jason Cripps from Port: "Hey West Coast - you want to come over for a ménage à trois?

The Pieman: "Sure, what's on the menu?"

Jason Cripps from Port: "Bring you wife and bring a camera - it will be me and your wife"
Jason Cripps from Port: "By the way, after you do the filming, leave your camera behind"

Does this sum up Jason Cripps?

Whole bunch of insensitive campaigners willing to block JHF to Port just coz we'll be disadvantaged. Bit selfish, ****ers - we should be doing all we could to ensure our direct competition get what they need to improve.

So can someone confirm for me if this is a real thing that exists or just BigFooty nonsense: can the AFL tick off future pick trades that would normally not be allowed, if the trading club is bringing in young talent.

Eg Port can’t trade their future first and second, but they’re bringing in JHF who naturally fits the bill as a highly rated, near enough to draft age, option.

Can the AFL grant exceptions or is this just nonsense that gets thrown around?

Usually the AFL can make up rules on the run, so I would say yes they can potentially approve it.

But everything I have ever seen has the 'can't trade future 2/3/4 round picks if you have traded out your future 1st' as a hard-and-fast rule, and the 'must use 2 picks in the first round over 4 years' always followed by the caveat of 'unless the AFL approves a trade'
