So can someone confirm for me if this is a real thing that exists or just BigFooty nonsense: can the AFL tick off future pick trades that would normally not be allowed, if the trading club is bringing in young talent.

Eg Port can’t trade their future first and second, but they’re bringing in JHF who naturally fits the bill as a highly rated, near enough to draft age, option.

Can the AFL grant exceptions or is this just nonsense that gets thrown around?

Considering they basically make up the rules as they go, I’ll say yes, they can probably do that.

From my mild insider knowledge:

The only exception to that is where a club has applied for and received special permission, with the AFL weighing up the age of the players brought in and other draft selections used in that time.

Guessing the issue here is MG.

There’s been enough talk about him coming home that you would think if he was interested his manager would have said hey maybe it’s a good opportunity right now.

Guessing he’s not wanting to leave
Kennedy didn't want to go either

All this "I come in peace" and then proceeding to not be peaceful stuff has taken me right back to Dolph Lundgren's Dark Angel.

Alien whispers "I come in peace" Dolph fires back with "and you go in pieces" (Gun blast)

Ginbey played better than Hewett in the under 18s champs

Hewetts best game in the champs was significantly better than any Ginbey game.

Hewett cops a lot of slack on this board for being inconsistent at WAFL LEAGUE level, yet when Ginbey played league and was shocking, I heard nothing…

Hewett is a better long term prospect than Ginbey, but neither should be in our plans unless they slide to 20 or we have a 1st in the teens.

It seems to me we're playing this rather well (I'm as surprised as you). Port are thirsty as balls for a deal and they're trying to have their cake and eat it too. The deeper they get into trade we.. epoch, the higher the risk that neither deal comes off, the more pressure they have to stump up or make a Sophie's choice.

Time is our asset on this one.

What else can they stump up though? That’s the issue here

I don’t think there’s a scenario where we win if Port / North are who we’re trading with

Another dense question, but... doesn't JHF have a standard 2-year deal? He's contracted until the end of 2023. I know North don't want to take a risk and have him leave at the end of his contract. But at the same time, they are under zero obligation to take a shitty deal either. Keeping him would be a gamble for sure... but even at the end of 2023, if he still wants to go home, he's unlikely to nominate for the PSD.

And despite the fact that he's nominated Port... why aren't North sniffing around Adelaide to see what they might be able to offer? If JHF's issue is a desire to go home, he should be willing to entertain the idea of being traded to Adelaide. I have no issue with players nominating a preferred club... but surely it's just that. Preferred.

Adelaide have a better draft position than Port.

We might not win but we certainly won't lose. There's a world in which they abandon Willie for the JHF deal and we get a year to mend things there. Their salary cap surely gets interesting if they manage to get these other deals done too. Willie might be about to learn about corporate loyalty the hard way.

The club would not want Willie back surely? The playing group was divided about him coming back to us after the suspension never mind this
