I won’t lie, I was melting hard when I heard of the final details of the trade swap.

We ultimately came out with unders considering our position for mine.

Personally, I would’ve preferred waiting for draft night for a better offer, or just grabbing Warlord.

Will we come out ahead in the long term? We’ll see…

Hey TerryFilk why not revert back to Chump Change and tell us about the trade? Surely the ban has finished.

Maybe you can tell us a story about the fact that we have a better chance of getting a star at picks 1 to 3 than latter in the draft!!

Or maybe you can assess the shape of the draft this year and realise it is a midfielder's draft and there are question marks on the supposed top 3 mids that are at the top and that there is a really enticing group of mids that are very even in the 5 to 15 bracket (where we just happened to double up).

Oh did you not hear? Terry is new around here 🤣

They are both Port’s problem now and good luck to them if they can get them playing at their best

I want Port to implode next year imo.

Again, sure, 2009 was a pretty weak draft as well, but Richmond set up their dynasty by picking up Dusty. There's a reason top 5 picks don't often get traded. But of course you're right, no one knows the future but probability indicates you're more likely to pick up a star in the top 5 then you are outside of that.
I know you’re making the distinction between a pick and the player taken with that pick, even though they’re effectively the same thing ie Pick 5 is only valuable because you are able to get the fifth best player in the draft.

But since 2016, a player taken with a top five pick has been traded on average of once per year.

2016 twice, 2020 zero, all other years once already.

If the reason we were happy with such a rubbish downgrade was because we are too chicken-s**t to draft a kid from outside of WA, then you may as well fold the club now and go back to calling it the VFL.
It's not about being chicken-s**t, hell last year their top pick was a guy from the VFL. But the reality of AFL these days is that players have a lot of power in forcing their way back home, and the WA clubs are the longest distance from where most of the top players come from. If the Eagles aren't going to be particularly good the next two years, it's not hard to imagine them drafting a guy #2/3 overall and then him coming to them after two years (or even pulling a JHF and at the end of next season) saying that they're homesick and want to go back to Vic. In which case you've wasted a year or two of development and are pretty much guaranteed to not get full value for that player in a trade. If it's like last year where everyone more or less agreed that there were 3 elite talents (JHF, Darcy, Daicos) then sure, I'd agree that you have to grab one of them, but this year it seems like there's Will Ashcroft and then a hodge podge of players who could be considered at #2, and in that case I don't mind at all having the 8th and 12th picks instead.

Personally I think that too much power currently lies with the young player and they should be contracted to the club that drafts them for a minimum of 3 years, and they shouldn't be able to force their way out as easily as they do now.

The thing that sucks in all this is the draft is Nov 28th. We now have to spew on this until then. It's such a big gap. Why not do the draft a week after trade week and be done with it.

The reason is that it’s after all school exams finish.

I’m not saying I disagree with you, but that’s the original reason for holding it late November

Three possible reactions to your post

If we go back to a state based draft, then we are winners. WA has more that 2 18ths of the talent being drafted meaning we will be winners

The AFLPA has been resistant to extending the initial term and there has been a statement made but many pundits (the range is there so it is fair to call it a widespread view) that the power has gone to the players and clubs need to adapt.

Oh and I agree that the vAFL is an issue. Despite the fact that the last 2 chairman of the AFL have heralded from WA, the bias is very much Vic centric.

In terms of the rubbish downgrade, it is OK to have differing views without cracking the s**ts

Top 5 picks that finished their careers at another club via trade or free agency (didn't count those delisted and then redrafted):

2001 - 2
2002 - 1
2003 - 3
2004 - 4
2005 - 3
2006 - 2
2007 - 0
2008 - 1
2009 - 2
2010 - 2
2011 - 3
2012 - 4
2013 - 2
2014 - 0
2015 - 1

The idea that 'top 5 picks don't often get traded' is pure rubbish.

Tbf I’d definitely look at 12 and something for Sydney’s 2 1sts if Hewett is our target
12 and 20 for 14 and 17?

Would depend on who’s still on the board at 12 but I’d be happy with that. Sydney would need to have someone specific in mind for them to consider that
