Posters here, myself included, have theorised that Sheezel and Wardlaw being potential flight risks as a reason for splitting pick 2. However, O’Brien has said that wasn’t an issue and they’d back themselves to retain any non-WA player they selected

Wish he didn't say that.

Imagine if Sheezel or Wardlaw have great careers and 8 and 12 top out as honest role players, and we could have had them and were prepared to back our ability to retain them and just ... didn't?

Not that heads will role or anything, but still. Shouldn't have said it and let us believe they were sooky Mummy's boys.

Why would you think that?

And we have plenty of evidence to suggest we aren’t shy in drafting players from outside WA.
I hope your correct but I get the feeling they're going for 2 WA's with 8&12

Have we only had 17 top 20 players in 20 years?
The average is about 24 per club (remembering there were 16 clubs for half those years). We're 30% below the average.

How did we swindle 2 flags from 4 grand finals?

Longer term however I don’t think it’s a good strategy for potential draftees to have reason to believe hinting at being a flight risk works

It may well end up that we take two WA boys with those picks, but if we do I don’t think it’ll because we we overlooked interstate players we rated higher

I’ll spew if Fremantle trade Lobb for pick 11, one pick before us.

Doggies offered 21 and F1 for Dunkley and then have to pay up 11 for Lobb……….

Nah can’t see that happening.

Riots outside the Kennel if that occurred.

Actually I am staggered that they want the marshmallow, in the first place.

Lobb is worth more to Fremantle to keep him rather than trade him.
For a team that struggles to kick a winning score, why the hell would you trade out you leading goal scorer ?

And why would you trade out Meek and keep Lobb.

Sensible decision would be to keep both .

Pick 20 and our F 2nd for 18 and 19?

Ports F2nd plus 26 for 18?

26 plus a F3rd for 19 would be too much to hope for I'm thinking.
in market value points:

18+19 = 20+26+35
18 = 20+62 or 26+37
19 = 20+62 or 26+40

19 or 18 for 26 plus our F3 looks about perfect in pure market value. they'd probably want more though.

I sense that the media is speculating about the WA talent at the 8 and 12 ranges but that group has been a sweet spot for some time. I believe we will back in our ability to retain (assuming not a massive flight risk to start ie Sheezel) and go for it.

I think it is lazy journalism that they assume we want Busslinger, Hewett and Ginbey. I assume that they will have us linked to WA players at 20 and 26.

I do note that there has been some very high draft picks going home in the last 2 years. Rankine, Hopper, Taranto, Bruhn Jackson and JHF were all this year, Last year it was Dawson, Cerra and Clark.

We lost Ebert and Judd but both of these were a long time ago.

Having said that - the power of calling a trade has shifted unhealthily to the players.

I would probably keep my powder dry as the picks in the mid 20's to early 30's are likely to be able to be used on needs basis (ie a tall, a forward, etc)

I hope we scoop up two very good mids at 8 and 12 (1 inside and 1 balanced) and then go a forward like C Clarke or Konstanty, a back like Weddle a tall like Barnett or Foster or another mid like Burgiel if we waiver a bit at 8/12. At 26, Allen would be worth a pick as he is a winger and running back but we must not Tom Lamb him.

I think Jones will slide late - if he has so much prowess per the combine, why did he not use it more and dominate this season. He was good but not great IMO.

Should we take a risk on Brayden George is he’s around at pick 20. Most likely wouldn’t see him next year as he is recovering from an ACL. Sounds pretty explosive though

Next year wouldn’t necessarily be the worst for us to have a young player on the list that we know is unlikely to play. We’ve retained a number of our older players and there’s already concerns that opportunities for youngsters might be limited

If we can pick up a draft slider on the cheap due to injury it could be worth a punt.

Probably at 26 though rather than 20 as those first 3 picks are too important to gamble with. We have to nail them

So.....

as it stand 34 on the main list and 4 rookies. Take 4 in the draft gets us to 42, which is the limit. Assuming Hurn plays on, decisions required on Witherdon, Trew, Winder and West. Letting any of these go open up rookie picks or pick 2 in the PSD.

Thoughts on what's happens next?

Winder and Trew gorn.

Jones promoted to senior list, Langdon (or Foley or Clark) demoted to rookie list.

Leaves five spots available on the senior list pre-draft.

Picks 8, 12, 20, 26, then a decision based on who’s left whether they use the final spot late in the draft, in the PSD, or vacant and take an extra rookie.

At least one spot (Trew’s) available as a live pick in the rookie draft. Could also add a Cat B rookie or two.

Don't be surprised if Narkle comes in somehow.

Can they demote contracted players? All those 3 have a contract for next year.

You cannot downgrade a player from the National Draft in their initial 2 year contract - so no to Clark. You can with Langdon and Foley - you just run the risk that they get picked up as a delisted free agent prior to the rookie draft. And you run the risk that the club needs to pay the top up of any lost salary if offered less from another club that picks them up

Puts you in the slot for homegrown talent

Is that a rule? I haven’t heard of it, and I’m sure clubs have done it recently. Jacob Wehr at GWS is one example.
