Since 2010 when we got Gov, and omitting re-rookied players or pickups from other clubs…

2011: Mascoulis (RIP), Papertalk, Tunbridge
2012: Sinclair
2013: Maginness, Powell
2014: Adamson, Brophy
2015: Snadden
2016: Gorter, Bayok, Watson
2017: Burrows, Olango, England
2018: Edwards, Riach, Bines
2019: Treacy, O’Neill, Reid
2020: Trew

Sinclair and Edwards are the only two that have really done anything, out of 21 picks. So not a great strike rate.

Goes to my point - whilst a retread isn't likely to deliver much - neither is going to the well.

Rookies, DFA, third rounders, fourth rounders all meh.

Most fail, the ones that hit 100 games like Jackson Nelson or win Brownlows like Pridda become the ultimate whipping boys.

What a world we live in.

HOLY . Has there ever been a more blatant tanking them Hawks currently???? Tanking in plain site for a generational player in harley ****** reid
Dermie openly spoke about it on Trading day a few days back. Think they are being quite open about it which is surprising.

AFL should be telling them no compensation picks if this is the path you go down.

I’m not sure. We have done a pretty good job the past 18 months… at least they will do it with kids, we have the credits crew performing at that level.

Hey I guys sorry for the Intrusion I come in Peace but how bout the Eagles pick up Jackson Nelson as Delisted Free agent?

* me the AFL is a joke

They literally had a meeting with Geelong and Gold Coast to approve the trade. Now they’re saying they’ll review the ability of clubs to smooth out a contract beyond its existing terms when a salary dump is involved

There’s not a single observer who’s looked at Bowes and 7 for a future third (likely to be a pick in the 50’s) and thought yeah that looks fair

The opportunity to set conditions for this deal was there at that meeting and given there were no real parameters actually set for such a deal, this was one occasion where they could have made a rule on the run

It’s like installing an alarm after you’ve been robbed

I don't understand why the player would agree to this. He is effectively being paid for 2 years and doing 4 years work. The whole thing is highly suspect and it really annoys me that it was allowed to go through.

Gold Coast's behaviour was also bizarre. They had 3 clubs interested but still felt the need to give up pick 7. Why not trade him to the club that would accept a second round selection?

Agree should simply be the club picks up the existing contract or no deal

Because Bowes would have had to agree. He was on contract. Once he nominated Geelong, they basically had a choice to either work with Geelong, or keep him.

IMHO, the real question is why the process was so public. If Bowes hadn't publicly nominated Geelong, GC would have had more bargaining power.

Goes from getting $1.7m over 2 years to $2.2m over 4 so he’s effectively on only $250k for years 3 and 4 of his contract. Maybe there’s some incentives there to get more if he performs but who knows

The issue is that instead of having to find $1.7m of cap space over 2 years, Geelong are now able to push $400k of that into 2025/26, so it’s not such a big hit

Smart by Geelong and tbh there were plenty of people suggesting that so it’s not as if it was some stroke of genius that no one else thought of

The salary cap hit was the entire reason why the Suns attached pick 7 to the trade (although they could have used 25 and clubs still would have done it imo) but by diluting the impact the AFL should have ensured Geelong paid a reasonable trade value.

Geelong also traded out their future 2nd before the meeting otherwise they probably would have been forced to pay that. AFL should have told them to go get one rather than allowing them to use a future 3rd. Or tell them to cough up 25 which they got in part by trading out their future 2nd

Or tell them to trade ratugolea for 33 ffs. Then hand that over. But somehow ratugolea is worth more than that so they keep him. FMD, what a joke of a comp.

Can't all contracts be terminated and/or changed as long as all parties agree? Why do the AFL think they can stick their nose in a case such as this? I don't see anything wrong with what Geelong did, it's GC that a poorly run and made a shit deal - they should be penalised for being absolutely useless.

Maybe low trigger clauses for more years?

Problem is some zones are really strong, others invisible. Perth Demons and Peel for example have never had a chance.
If Collingwood got Oakleigh (Just 1x NAB League team) they would have essentially 2x top 10 picks a year.
But if Perth was combined with Peel, South Freo, East Freo for example then it could work. Obviously it would need to be fair and equitable amongst all teams and open for review every 5 years or something to deal with demographic changes

Reminds me of that time they charged the Father-Son rules after a certain club received two future Hall of Famers for pick 40 (G. Ablett) and 41 (T. Hawkins). What a lucky club they were, he he he...
