I still find Hurns situation strange. If he hasn't silently re-signed, why has it not been done yet? Surely its a fairly simple contract extension.

Overseas / interstate on off-season break , depends on Hurn if he plays on might change his mind on return .

Has earnt the contract if he wants to play on .

He was a late re-signing last year too. I think that was just due to hammering out the figures, but I can't imagine the club are pushing him hard for a decision.

Don't take it as WCE not holding an interest in Phillipou, it's simply a question mark.
If Ginbey goes earlier maybe the Eagles back him in.

If he’s best available at our pick, we have to back ourselves in and select him.

Despite what the nuffies in the media say, our player retention over the years has been exemplary.

Would be happy with either Poo or Ginbey at our first.

We still don’t officially know about Witherden, Winder, Trew or West, even though people supposedly in the know have said some or all of them have contracts.

The delay could just be that the club doesn’t bother announcing these things.

There is a cost to trading down

I don’t think it’s a massive problem. There was always going to be a minimum 7 players taken before our pick (8 if you count Ashcroft) but that will still leave several quality players available when our turn arrives

If Ginbey is taken then one of Clark or McKenzie or Busslinger or …… you get the point will be there

I don’t think the issue with Phillipou is retention- he’s actually said he’d almost prefer to be drafted from a non-SA team. The point pants has raised is something different the way I interpreted his post

Thanks for sharing that information with us all, much appreciated. Sounds like we best avoid Phillipou, the go home factor is becoming a bigger deal nowadays.

Perhaps local clubs getting more in players ears about strategically putting 'go home factor' vibes out to interstate clubs.
In which case I hope we are intelligently playing the same game big time.

That said, once you pull a player into your club from interstate you are now in the prime seat to exert the greatest amount of influence possible (extreme legitimate family/home sickness notwithstanding).
We are the biggest, richest club in the land with a history of achieving success. If after drafting a Philipou (as an example) we're not able to make staying more attractive than say Adelaide Crows making leaving more attractive then we are clearly do something very wrong.

Draft picks expected to be used by each club

Adelaide - 2 (46 - next pick 81)
Brisbane - 3/4 (**** knows where their last picks end up but they’ll be late)
Carlton - 4 (66)
Collingwood - 3 (27 - next pick 51)
Essendon - 4/5 (62/68)
Fremantle - 4 (76)
Geelong - 2/3 (58/64)
Gold Coast - 1/2 (5/45)
GWS - 5 (31 - next pick 57)
Hawthorn - 4/5 (48/50 - next pick 52)
Melbourne - 2 (37 - next pick 90)
North Melbourne - 4 (43 - next pick 59)
Port Adelaide - 2 (60)
Richmond - 2 (63)
St Kilda - 3 (32 - next pick 47)
Sydney - 3 (42 - next pick 75)
West Coast - 4/5 (26/78)
Western Bulldogs - 3 (39 - next pick 69)

Expected total picks used 54-61

So our pick 78 should we use it would end up mid to late 50’s

Alternatively we could try trading our F4 (55-60 range) to trade up if there’s a slider we’re interested in (think say Broadbent or Kaleb Smith). Gold Coast (45), St Kilda (47) or Hawthorn (48/50/52) are all clubs with a pick they may not use we could trade with.

Oh very legitimate like Henry homesick at Collingwood so far away from mummy at Geelong ….. FFS what a crock of shit.

The Cats love manipulating the system:

Mental health issues.
Sick kids.
Melbourne Metro - Geelong homesickness.
Indoctrinating the young Geelong Falcons to become Geelong Homing Pigeons.

And they will continue to do so and get away with it, until the soft ***** at vAFL
house stop allowing them to do as they please.

What a shitshow the AFL is on all things equalisation.

That's an interesting take, it's almost like we traded out of top 2 and would be essentially equally happy with any of the players in that 7-15 range. I can understand not being too fussed with whose available later in the draft with speculative picks but I wonder if any draft watchers would know if it is a common occurrence for a club to essentially rate a raft of first rounders equally?

Trading down from 2 to 8+12 was to get us two picks in a range the club saw as relatively even. O’Brien said as much

I’m not an avid draft watcher but this draft does seem unusual in that there’s a group of roughly 10 players that are a) very even and b) not significantly behind the top 4/5 of the draft.

From our perspective its also an issue that the top end of the draft are all Victorian and aside from Cadman have a flight risk factor

In any other year I think it would be unlikely we’d do the trade. This year I can see why the club did it

There is only so much power and money can buy though. I blame more the players association led by Dangerfield. The power has slowly shifted too far into players favour to the point where the go home factor is getting out of control. We can look back at our history as a good retention club no doubt but that doesnt take into account the new environment by which we are operating in presently, times have changed and we may need to change with it.
