Which journo/phantom was the first one to have mail that we were into Chesser? Was one of the few times that the media was correct as to who we were into.

Would be interested to see who they have us taking this year.

Most of them had us taking Erasmus last year but did note the interest in Chesser. Similarly, this year they have us taking Ginbey and Hewett. Haven’t heard of any media discussing our interest in non-WA players outside of Cadman and Clark. We won’t be getting either of those now with the pick split.

Yes no recruiters or part timers can reveal info .

I just hope we don't " out-smart " ourselves at the draft .
Take best available at pick 8 and recruit at least two midfielders in our top four picks .

Unkey dorey ...simple safe strategy success .

We're definitely in a position in the draft to get a mix of needs-based players - of decent quality.

Most people (including the pie man) are suggesting it is very even from 5-15 and then again 15-25/30 so we get a couple of cracks in both ranges.

Agreed we need 2 mids, and I'd also say we need 1 tall (that won't be an issue - we always take a tall!). Ideally that would be a tall forward, but if a defender or ruckman was too good to pass up then so be it.

It's also why we need to ensure at least a couple of available spots in the rookie draft. We really need to add a developing ruckman, and some small forwards and defenders. There should be some of these types in the RD if we haven't taken them in the ND already (i.e. if we take a ruck in the ND, then we look to small forwards and defenders in the RD - but if we have only taken smalls and a tall defender or forward then a ruck in the RD is a priority).

Like this approach, but would prefer we don’t use our first rounders on talls. Save this for our picks in the 20s or rookie draft.

Good. Either he plays forward this year or retires. He's done as a back. Teams have found him out.....can't defend 1:1.

Unless I was seeing things but he proved he could play Back just six months ago.

I certainly did consider Buss at 13 and at 9 too.
I thought Hewett was no chance to get through to our next pick, so I pounced at 12.

What also, very much appealed to me, was the pairing of Clark and Hewett as I think they would work together well and be a really complimentary pairing in game styles and skill sets.

Oh yes I did consider Barnett at our third and had Hotton not been there , then Barnett was who I was going to take.

Barnett was in some part what influenced, my decision making, to pass on Busslinger.

Having four picks only, I wanted only one tall maximum ( Be that a KPP or a ruck ) and three players who could to various degrees, address our midfield woes.

I ended up with zero talls.

To be Honest I was undisciplined and got sucked in by the allure of Hotton, I deviated from my plan and it ended up biting me on the arse.

What I should have done is this:

Clark
Hewett
Barnett
Szybkoski ( he was who I would have taken with 26 had I taken Barnett ).

In the real world what I would have done, if I was The Pie Man & Co on the night is:

Live traded a future 3rd rounder and pick 26 for a pick either just after or just before our 3rd pick.

That way I would ended up with:

Clark
Hewett
Hotton
Barnett

That would have been a much better mix of playing types.

When I took Hotten I looked very closely at who was picking between our third pick and our fourth pick.... to reassure myself that I could still get Barnett.

It was.

WB - English and a young Darcy
NTH - Goldstein, Xerri, Coleman -Jones and a young Edwards
HAW - just traded in Meek
COL - who took Keeller with their previous pick, although I was wary of Pies 4 Life as he is a VERY astute and good talent scout, Pies were my 1 concern.

And thats how it panned out. :(

So there you go, some of the thought process behind my selections.
Yeah was still a good haul would be happy with any of those results

I like what you said in another post about Ginbey too. I don’t get the hype, for me there are a lot of questions around him being able to be an elite mid.

he has one string to his bow, interception. Teams have worked around/through that. He is slow, not great one on one, and is now injury prone. Stick him down forward and make other teams defend him, Allen and Darling.....50 goals each.

Rookie the talls. Dont spend valuable draft picks unless we r paying up for English.

Some talls we should consider

Was a lock for AA before he got injured. Came back and got an impact injury.

I do think given Barrass made the squad that the volume of ball benefited McGovern and Barrass from a stats perspective. Made them look like goats..

Gov looked back to his best last year. There’s a good argument for him to be captain in 2023. Also can’t believe we delisted Naish looking at those votes.

Schofield berating WCE supporters for making Langdon the whipping boy. Reckons he was better than that. Shame on all of you!! I myself never said a bad word about the little man.

Langdon reminds me of the dwarf from Bad Santa

Naish tried to use the corridor and attack the game. Naughty boy. Simmo couldn’t coach the attacking intent out of him so he has to go

Did you actually watch any of our games in the second half of the year when players were routinely trying to use the corridor and take the game on?

17000 odd post makes you an aficionado or someone who just spends too much time pretending he know what TF he's on about....the later is my guess. Troll live under bridges mate and never leave....17000 posts fits that description

McGovern is both a better mark and a significantly better kick (he can be lazy) than Barrass. He would still be perfectly fine if tasked with being a lockdown defender, but he's not, hence he plays CHB to try and get the opposition to kick away from him. Perhaps the only two players he's not really suited to playing against are Cameron and Buddy as they get up the ground a lot more and then come back hard the other way. .

The problem is our midfield was ruined due to a combination of injury, covid, playing too early coming back from injury without fitness so the team couldn't run both ways and couldn't compete on the inside. To combat this we played an extra around the inside but this just made things worse as the opposition then had spares on the outside when they won the contest.

Prior to injury this year Gov was saving the team i would suggest even with the few bad turnovers at least an average of 4 goals a game.

lol if Gov, Oscar and JD kick 50+ each we are top 4

If we only have OA and JD as our targets I think OA will get battered from pillar to post.He is such a courageous player he tends to pay the price for it.Our forward and midfield coaches haven’t got it in them to come up with a plan to A.kick short or B.grubber the ball forward.WC home of the BOMB it forward;don’t ever think that coz our key forwards are way above average below their knees that we should utilise that advantage.
Gov forward? I like it.

To add to this good point, also take midfielders that have attend centre bounces regularly this season.
That's a skill in itself, with NN the best tap ruck going around we need mids that can win their own ball post his era.

OA ain’t a kid anymore. He’ll be bullying a few key defenders next year and holding his own against most of the rest I reckon.

Problem for me with OA is that it's a big call to expect him to be the the No. 1 target down forward after he just missed an entire year of development and before that was thrown around the ground so much. He just hasn't had enough chance to develop his forward craft to expect him to hit the ground running in that role. I don't expect him to do too much in the first half of the season.
