Look personally i think he'd be worth a punt with our last pick or rookie picks but theres a good chance he goes undrafted
If we're looking at drafting a ruck with a high pick next year then you probably wouldn't bother with broadbent but if he's slide down the draft boards was due to shin splints then who knows we might take him

If he does go undrafted, I'd pull the trigger with our first rookie draft selection. Worth the punt.

Hewett spoke very well. Eagles would rate that. Happily take him with our second pick. If he was somehow available at pick 20 that would be a huge win.

Personally, I would happily take him at either pick 8 or 12, won't be there at 20. Don't do a Kelly with him.

Eagles said mids, you kents heard Gavin Bell. That means Hewett is in the mix, I'm sure we aren't dumb enough to risk him being taken before 21 if we're keen.

Stop wetting your pantaloons over Busslinger. Have we actually even been linked to him other than The West doing it's usual drivel?

Is this the same Dark Sharks that was adamant we weren't drafting Culley?

How the turntables.

Personally I don't think he would give a rats arse.

I am sure he couldn't care less which wasn't the point of the comment.
I am gobsmacked as how great a disparity there is in posters opinions about players. I can't imagine there would have been this much varying opinion in years gone past

Rohan got the first pick and miraculously took who was widely regarded as the best prospect available.

I'm still as shocked as anyone.

With Broadbent, I would love to know his height. At 17, he was 201 cm. I suspect he has grown as well as the shine splints and hence a less than consistent year.

The word was that he had visited Lathlain Park for a couple of interviews. I suspect he will be there for our first rookie pick.

"We’re looking for midfielders, I don’t think there’s any secret there so we’re looking in that space." West Coast football manager Gavin Bell on the club's draft focus.

Melts when who we want is off the board at 9 and we pick the slinger
“We wanted mids but thought the best tall in the draft was a better selection given our preferred choice was gone before our pick”

Followed up by us taking Jefferson at 12 to “replace Kennedy”

Watching his highlights and seeing a bit more of Hewitt; man his best is the best of any draftee I’ve seen. He’s fast, he tackles,he takes a hanger,he kicks goals from 50, he’s a natural on his left. Am I missing something? If we don’t snap him up with our first pick, and punt on him dropping down the order we are nuts.He looks like a bigger improved Shuey! The Poo would be the only other player I would ..maybe.. consider in front of him.

He’s doing it all wrong. Someone get this man a tent and a lady so he slides to 20. Wouldn’t care who we picked up with 8 and 12 if Hewett got to our 3rd pick, instant draft win

The only issue with Hewett watching him at league level was his effort between contests. He jogged a lot and didn't seem to get involved much apart from when the ball was near him. Looked a little Lazy. Could be just the role he was playing i guess.
When he gets the ball hes great, can kick off both feet, has a burst of speed and kicked some goals.
I still want him at 13 but I think he's effort and consistancy is some of the reason he has dropped a bit. That and the rumoured attitude issues.

Desire to win at the contest is hard to teach (see Brander vs say Waterman as an example - the higher skilled player with less desire is no longer on a list - where the guy who isn't as naturally skilled is still here.... as much as some around here complain about it!)

Effort is variable and teachable (see WC 2018 vs WC since 2019)

Hewett seems to have the desire to win contest-by-contest, but sure might lack some effort at times (from reports saying he had long COVID that probably explains it. It would be difficult to move contest-to-contest in a high level environment when you are going at 90% or less).

The attitude stuff I'll leave up to the club. They will do their checks and assuming it is maturity rather than an ongoing problem we should back ourselves in.

Interestingly in the video he spoke about one of the lessons he learned was overtraining in the lead up to some games - particularly in the champs - which might explain some of his form inconsistency. He should be a lock for our second pick.

Hopefully now at 204cm

You don’t think Freo will grab him? They’ve got 5 picks between our 4th and 5th pick. Can see them taking him since they lost a bit of ruck depth in Meeks/Lobb

I had the same view went i went to the Beagles game down at Bassendean. He did dummy a player and kicked a great goal from outside 50 though.

Hopefully we started the rumour

Broadbent is long gone for us i reckon.

Cockburn going to be all over him like a cheap suit. Campaigners are gonna campaign.

I mean if he falls to our fifth pick then great, but i certainly wouldnt expect nor plan on that happening. Just get Barnett early and be done with it. Max Knobel or Foster as a fall back.

ROB certainly earning his money in terms of media commitments this offseason.

Interesting that he acknowledges Cadman and Wardlaw as the likely two first picks after the Ashcroft bid. Doesn’t give much else away.

Reckon he’s been asked the “WA talent or best available despite the current go home factor” question in every bloody interview. Would be infuriating having to answer the same question ad nauseam.

O’Brien talking to Duffield gave absolutely nothing away even joked about doing that during the interview. Main questions covered -

• Best available or needs with first two picks - best available initially with later picks being influenced by who’s available at those picks and who we’ve already picked
• Describe draft pool - some quality talls but overall is weighted towards midfielder and running types
• Likelihood of WA talent (Ginbey, Busslinger and Hewett named by Duff) getting through to our picks - hard to know as they’re all talented, bonus if they do but said there’ll be be good options at our picks regardless
• Go home factor and has it increased - Maybe a slight shift but not a huge factor, will take WA player if two players are close but will back the club to develop and retain any player as the retention rate has been good in the past
• Next years draft pool - High end talent looks very good but cautions that players don’t always develop as expected. Did point out that clubs were keen to gather future picks due to the talent coming through next year
• Have clubs contacted us re pick swaps for this year or next - had contact yes but more clubs enquiring rather than anything concrete. Prepared to keep an open mind like last year if an opportunity presents
• Who would he take with 1&2 if he had those two picks - reluctantly admitted to Cadman and Wardlaw being likely in the top 3 or 4 picks and would be pleasantly surprised if either was still there at our pick
• Wardlaws hamstrings and how medical assessments are made - medical screenings are made available to medical staff only, not recruiters, and they provide advice based on the information given
• Need to recruit ruck depth and whether we’d take one with one of our first four picks (noting that we were scouting Barnett) - potentially yes but depends on who’s available. Ruck is a need in the next few years with Naitanui aging. Noted that ruck position is unique in the market and the draft pool of rucks in recent years hadn’t kept up with demand
• How many drafts has he been involved in and will there be a few more - 22/23 and hopefully a few more yet. Said he’s looking forward to what the next few drafts will bring. (Seems like rumours of his demise were exaggerated)
• Other questions about how long it takes to assess if a draft was successful, his favourite draft and favourite draft pick that he gave generic non-commital answer to
• What type of player will Chesser be - combination of speed and size will allow him to play outside (wing, forward or half back) but also be able to go on ball and contribute there

Like I said gave nothing away
  • Best available
  • WA talent a bonus but not a priority
  • Open to pick swaps on trade night if beneficial
  • Chesser will win a Brownlow

Definitely take him at 8. Don't gamble! We should have learnt this by now. If you want someone, just snap them up, and I am sure he is very much in the conversation at that pick. Just pull the trigger.
