Good rookie choices like Joyce?

Trew and Winder have both struggled for fitness. As has their other cohort draftee in L Edwards. There comes a time when you need to look at the portfolio (ie squad as a whole) and realise we have an issue with forever injured players. There are enough at the senior level without needing to find their injury prone replacements.

And we all thought the night was going ever so well and then along comes the chief apologist and excuse maker.

Dont use our 2nd rookie pick, leave a spot open and they keep training until the end of Jan with any other train on players. Then pick the one who shows the most, wants it more and gets super fit.

IMO the rule should be you can only match points with two draft picks. This means clubs have to trade all these mid-range picks to work their way up the board and get something approaching what looks like a reasonable trade.
Actually, just correcting what would happen is it means clubs can't just trade down picks and end up with a series of picks in the 30s and 40s.

They'd have to keep on to their original picks in the teens and mid-20s and use them to match academy and F/S bids, which is what they should have been doing all along.

If there’s more talented players than the two in the RD I’d be happy to take them, I just doubt that will be the case.

If Broadbent is there at our first pick inthe RD we'd be silly to pass.

If we dont pick up a ruck in the main draft we likely will in the RD at pick 2.

Only just catching up on what happened.

Interesting that the draft order is what most would have predicted about a week ago, and all the smoke and mirrors (Ginbey to GC, Poo to Dons, Tsatas to slide) was pointless.

Ginbey and Hewett picked themselves. I suspect Poo's attitude didn't sit well with the conservative "private school dweebs only" philosophy of the Eagles. We were 1 bolter away from having to decide between Hollands/The Buss and Hewett at 14, so I'm pretty happy those options were taken away from us. If Hewett's game vs Vic Metro wasn't an oddity but what he is capable of when fit, we have a beauty here.

Hope our next two picks aren't too conservative. Hotton, George, Barnett, Keeler, Hustwaite and Burgiel are on the board, hope we don't go into our shell and grab a WA kid because....WA!

Clark shouldn’t be a “mainstay mid” he’s not better than Kelly, Gaff, Shuey or Yeo and I’d rather play Chesser, Hough, Hewett and Ginbey in midfield over him

I don’t see Clark getting much game time next year personally
Yeah mainstay mid in the wafl was what I ment

I would really like Barnet and hotten for our next 2 and wouldn't crack the sads if we used our 5th pick on a slider/smokey.

I think only one rookie is selected leave a spot open for the mid season draft.

It is highly likely we will have pick 1-4 in the mid season.....if anything clubs have shown from the low numbers likely to be drafted this year, lack of exposure due to covid means there are surely some diamonds in the rough that light it up in the VFL, SANFL, wafl. If we hadn't got Culley and he slid to this draft, where would he have gone. Top 10 maybe.

As we draw a breath in between nights and assess it is hard to fault our off season moves to date.

Whilst we didn't get the upper end of plaudits for our trade period, I think we were underrated by many because we did one thing that a lot of clubs couldn't and that was use our early first rounder to generate greater value. 2 for 8/12 was a brilliant move. We got two excellent talents for the price of 1. Many other clubs were making noise on doing something similar, right up until the count the started but none could achieve. Our ability to get the deal done should receive more credit.

2-3 months ago, Hewett was the first name being reeled off when many were considering a match for Pick 2. Talent, mid, local lad etc. To achieve Hewett and add Ginbey as well is a fantastic result.

Tonight will be interesting with those two, Buss, Jones and Allan off the table. They were the obvious 5 WA boys. I am keen to see if we look to add even more value to next years suite of selections in the SUPER draft.

But so far, so good......

I really like the idea that a poster suggested earlier (not sure who it was so can't tag them, but this is definitely plagarised) - Take George, with the plan to put him on the LTI list and we can take a 5th pick in the draft, plus 2 rookies (possibly one being Trew or Winder) plus a SSP or mid-season-draft player.

Then we have George waiting in the wings for 2024 once he has had a full recovery (not dissimilar to what we've had with Chesser but not by choice).

I dont get the Kaleb Smith hype TBH.

Think there are better players and at 29 he's a reach.

He's quick sure but what else?
So from the west article I read earlier in the year he is a very good 1 on 1 defender against small and medium forwards , super competitive, good mark for his size and damaging penetrative kick to go with his wheels that he actually uses in game .

I recon we could trade pick 29 to Melbourne for 39 + one of their future 2nds and still get Smith.

While I wanted Mackenzie, the choice was taken out of our hands. Low key excited about the next generation midfield mix of Ginbey, Hewett, Culley, Hough and Chesser. It’ll be good to get these kids games, mixed in with the senior bodies of Kelly/Nic Nat/Shuey/Sheed/Yeo to give them a buffer.

Feel like we probably need to find a Rioli replacement, and another ruck.

I would be happy to take George here as others have mentioned. 2023 is going to be a rebuild year, so May as well Nank another highly rated prospect for 2024.

Dreading the turnaround in mood on this board when our first pick today is someone nobody had even considered pre-draft
I hope we don't try to get smart with our next 2 picks and just pick the best available based on our needs.
There's a chance we might feel overconfident after thinking that we've already nailed night 1 of the draft.

Our pick 71 has come into 64 with all the bids.

How much further could it come in? Only really the Alwyn Davey Jnr bid to come isn’t there?

Given the quality avilable (strong 6 to 8 players) do we entertain an offer for 20?

A future 2nd could be nice?

Saints have 31 and 35?

Trade pick 20 for 31 and a future 2nd?

But first bid on Davey to force Essendon hand

The more I think about that Hawks and Sydney trade the weirder it gets.

Seems heavily weighted in Sydney’s favour why would Hawthorn do that trade?
Obviously feel Wheedle will be a great fit on there list, kid looked pretty handy main knock was he’s only 192cm.
Hawks are at a stage where they will keep bringing picks forward they need to get development into them now not save picks for future drafts.

Ok so some things from night 1.

For all the media talk I was actually shocked when Geelong picked Clark, I was certain they were drafting Busslinger.

The Dogs bid on Fletcher purely out of spite for losing Dunkley. The dogs genuinely wanted two top 10-15 picks for him.

Essendon had an in principle deal with Sydney for pick 17 for Hewett (got this info today) however even with Hewett off the board Sydney got a much better deal out of the Hawks and actually gave up who they would have drafted with their pick 14.

Carlton were interested in Allan but the interest was always with their second draft pick and only if Hollands was off the board. (club got it's first choice in the first round for the role) The price for trading up for him in the first round was considered too steep and of little benefit after securing Hollands. The club did want to trade both their first and second round picks higher for another player and Allan but it never got close to getting off the ground. (they were certain if the trade went through Hollands would have been off the board in between the picks)

Sydney absolutely destroyed GWS draft planning. Making them pay up for their Academy pick and then picking their number 1 choice small in Konstanty before GWS could have their next pick. GWS thought they'd get 4 live picks in by selling off the first pick of the second round for a slightly later second and a future second before having to match. I think it means unless someone puts a big offer in front of GWS overnight they will be wanting that live pick. Sydney's first choice for 17 is still on the board and they are hoping he gets through to the pick they traded from the Hawks.

There are enough high quality names left on the board that West Coast should be able to get another small (and a tall from what i've heard) with the next two picks. If i were drafting for West Coast I think it would be Clarke and Burgiel but i'm not. (making the assumption Jakob Ryan is off the board)

I know of 1 offer already through to GWS for tomorrow's first pick for Jakob Ryan but it has already been knocked back.

For me there's been a few too many speculative picks already which has meant if the cards fall right tomorrow WCE have some great choices to pick from. I just hope the club hasn't made a promise on a certain player with our last planned pick. AFAIK the original was 4 planned picks. I hope the Club bids on Davey as I think Essendon match and it takes out one of the picks in between our first and second tomorrow.

I think Ginbey was a reach, however is potentially a very good pairing with Hewett and Culley. For as much as people want to give the pie man s**t if Culley, Hewett, Chesser and Ginbey all come off as hoped the centre square is already fixed outside of a ruck.

Expecting Ryan, George and Hotton to be off the board pretty quick tomorrow.
I’m with you. I expect Clarke to be our next pick if GWS don’t take him and Burgiel would be my next pick. We do need another ruck and KPF so maybe one of the big SA players could be a greater need. We can maybe pick up a ruck with the last vacancy.

The more I think about it, the more I like Charlie Clark.

Looks so much like LeCras (wears number 2 as well!) and the Frenchman gave as such a different (and great) look in our fwd line as he was very hard to match up on.

Also Cowan being a Hurn replacement means we are less likely to play Ginbey back, which we know WC have a bad habit of doing when we draft mids!!

That said, any two of Barnett, Burgeil, Cowan or Clark would do nicely.

Not as much of a fan of picking up George as I think we need a player ready to go for rd1 to get games into them alongside our other new players.

Hotton looks nice but I'm not sure he will find a set spot at AFL level and get stuck on a HFF (like Masten)
