Do you realise that it's the lifestyle AWAY from the big cities as the reason so many players are happy to play in Geelong for less??
Heard an interview with Hawkins where he said he can drive from his farm to training in less than half an hour.....name me another AFL team where that is possible!!

I have lived in plenty of parts of Australia and living in Tassie shits all over the rest of them for lifestyle, space, food, cleanliness, and best of all, less peole that think that having more nightclub options makes a city better!!!

I'll give you an idea.....I have my kids every Sunday. We have gone fishing (and caught fish), driven up the mountain and played in the snow and then gone indoor rock climbing, all in one day with less than 90min total driving!!!

Tassie will have zero issue attracting players as, despite what all you mainlanders think, not everyone wants to live in a shitty apartment complex or in a street of mcmansions that all look the same!!
Lifestyle away from, but proximity to, big cities.

If Tom Hawkins want to go to an Ed Sheeran or Michael Buble concert (I'm not sure of his music taste, but guessing on those 2) he can drive an hour and a half, then the same back and sleep in his own bed.

A player in Tassie would have an overnight stay.

Hobart is a lovely place, but it clearly doesn't get the music/theatre/festival/art etc etc tours going there.

Cockburn is 30 minutes from Mandurah and plenty of hobbie and active farms in that catchment zone. Similar for Footscray heading west.

Plenty of fishing (marine and divorcees🤪) and the water is warm enough to swim in.

The cost of housing in and around Geelong is a massive benefit. Tassie will be the same. This will be more of an issue for older players with families.

Reality check, Albert and Middle Park seem to be extremely popular with AFL players. It is not for the cost of housing. The big cities attract 18+ year olds.

With where our new training base is, Brisbane ticks that off easily.

Gold Coast’s training base is easily within 30 minutes of hinterland acreage.

Would you mind explaining why?

All well and good to try and s**t on someone's opinion (which by the way has been formed by actually doing the stuff in the topic) but unless you can give a reason why my take is bad or give an alternate opinion, your take is far, far worse than mine.
I believe you’re missing a significant point. It’s only a small percentage of AFL players who want such a lifestyle.

On our list, Daniher is the only player living on a hobby farm.

Most of our players live in the leafy, inner city suburbs. However, most of the indigenous players live bayside, near community.

Even Treloer just bought up here, relatively close to our training base, but in suburbia.

Treloer?

It's not the kind of lifestyle most people in their early-mid 20's want. At that age most want to be around other people socialising, going out and partying.
It's not until you get a bit older that you become bitter, twisted and would love to fire 95% of the population off in a rocket into the sun and then a quieter lifestyle in the bush begins to appeal more.

Yet ask half the Geelong players why they play there for less $$ than anywhere else!!

We have over 800 players in the AFL, not all of them are going to be kids that want a city lifestyle.
We often here about a new draftee loving to surf, how often can you do that playing for Essendon compared to playing for Geelong, WC, Freo or GC.

25 years ago, Tassie had a shocking retention rate of its young people who would leave to study at uni and never come back.
Now that is far less an issue.

I think you'll find that the dodgy nightclub life happens a lot less for young AFL players nowadays as they realise they simply can't get away with it!

Recall 15 -20 years ago the Collingwood party boys saying they would drive to outer Melbourne to get on the turps and other stuff to avoid the inner city social spotlight.

No one bats an eyelid when you want to go all Didaka with your uzi out the window on the way home after a sesh too.

Was Riley Hardeman the dashing defender for U18 WA this year? He looked like a gem from what I saw of him, would be very interested if he made it through to our second pick.

Looks like he's already played reserves after chopping up in the colts too.

Played wing at the champs with real speed, haven't seen him play half back but yes could be electric off HB.

Sounds like sneaky salary cap games. Have the club signed up mum and dad too? Sisters? The family dog gets paid for protecting club assets?;)
Well…

The land for our new training base was “donated” to the club via a $1 peppercorn lease from our ex-chairman, and it’s called Brighton Homes Arena.

I’m pretty sure the Berry brothers eldest brother has a job up here with Brighton Homes, and I wouldn’t be surprised if any of our players have a brother who is a tradie, or vfl player, finds an a job with the company.
