Contract status of all players now fully updated

It looks like McGovern's management is planting stories in the media already to try and put pressure on the eagles and pump up McGovern's price in the contract negotiations. The article talks has quotes about how much the McGovern brothers would love to play together for the same team and how settled Mitch is at Carlton and how much Michael Voss loves him, thus implying that if they were to play together it would be via Jeremy McGovern joining Carlton.

McGovern's manager (Colin Young) is notorious for doing this kind of stuff and planting articles in the media either bigging up the player, creating a facade of massive interest from rival clubs or suggesting that the player has strong non - monetary reasons for possibly leaving their current club, and thus pressure clubs during contract negotiations with players he manages. In fact he does it so much that he negates any possible impact the tactic could have as clubs would know the stories are being planted by Young.

It will be interesting to see what value the free market puts on McGovern. I don't think he is worth anywhere near a million plus a year. But he has a pretty healthy ego, has been being paid that much for quite a while and no doubt expects that level of remuneration to continue. Maybe i am wrong and somebody will pay it to him.

It’s the same management group but Jeremy McGovern’s manager per that article is Andrew McDougall. Good chance that he has the same operating style but at training not long ago I was standing nearby/amongst the journos - for some reason they started talking about Colin Young. Didn’t sound like he had many fans, however McDougall was talked about as being completely different and easier to deal with

Can’t see us trading for Mitch and if Carlton want to throw silly money at McGovern then it’s not the worst thing for us. A good value 3 year contract would get us at least a 2nd round pick tied to our finishing position

The important thing for us is that we don’t get sucked in to matching a high bid from a rival club. Depending on form and durability this year, we should only be offering him 2 years, 3 at a stretch, on significantly less than his current contract

Only thing i'd offer for Mitch is a one year rookie deal, I don't see too many other takers for him out there.

That being said Freo might be stupid enough to offer him big money given their historic love affair with recycled tall forwards.

I assume Colin Young is McDougall's boss and in charge overall even if McDougall is assigned as being McGovern's main point of contact.

I agree. Make him a fair offer given the service he has given overall to the club. Let him accept or reject it and just accept the outcome. Who knows what is true and what isn't but i read a while ago that Carlton were struggling to match offers for McKay so if that is the case they would likely have to shift players out to make room for a salary the size of McGovern's. And they are not really in flag mode either so i don't see them as a likely suitor.

Keys, If you have ever watched either of the two tv specials :

Show Me The Money

They are documentaries of the dealing and machinations that go one behind the scenes during AFL trade week.

In which both Colin Young and McDougall are heavily featured you will see that they discuss every deal together.

Also the two shows highlight just what an egocentric flog Colin Young is.

Hard to imagine many more people so enamoured with their own image and believing their own self importance than Colin Young.

Guy comes across as a dead set w***er and one of those guys who’s lights you just want to punch out.

McDougall also comes across as a try hard, sycophant.

But rest assured guys they both speak highly of me too. 😜👍

Carlton are absolutely in flag mode.

Been cooking since 2010

We can pay McGovern market or we pack his bags for him and get a draft pick. Bloke has underperformed massively given the size of his contract.

I think this article is more aimed at getting Mitch a home. He has been pitiful since getting to Carlton. Has hardly been on the park and his form his been bad to average when he does.

😂😂 if they brought Mitch McGovern to WC it'd be THE biggest fold moment in the clubs history.
It'd be a microwave memberships and throw bird shit at HQ type moment!!

I’m sure you have all been waiting for the volcanos take on such things…..

I’m not sure if it’s on that podcast but Gerard has decided using Jason Corne- Francis is a way to get up kanes nose.

He might actually suit Freo. Is he a free agent? Got the family connection to the club, back in WA, comes cheap, can play both ends, but might unlock someone like Cox going up forward for them (again).

There's a few WA talls that the Purps might be into.

OOC not a free agent though.

Only way I see it happening is if a third party get involved to bring them both in... Perhaps somewhere like Norf or Port Adel
Or Jeremy and Mitch accepting massively reduced contracts for the next 2 years at Carlton and hanging the boots up once they're done.
While we do lack interceptors down back, we don't have the cap space to be doing any brotherly favours for two of the most overpaid players in the league. Also, we have enough issues keeping the blokes we already have on the park... adding another Mcgovern is a recipe for disaster. Even if he's the far better of the brothers.

Hey Jeremy, we will give your brother a modest signed contract on the proviso it gets taken out of the money we were going to pay you ;)

If Gov wants to go…that would be a shame…but ya know…what is it…2 years tops after 2023? Maybe they give him 3 years? That’d be silly for an injury plagued 31 year old.

…but I guess they are paying Zac Williams like $800k aren’t they?

Or do we target KP forwards in trades or a FA at the end of 2023 or 2024?

Logan McDonald
Naughton RFA
Georgiades
Van Rooyen (getting big raps at Melbourne at 19)

Then there is Tim English RFA in 2024 to team up with Barnett?

To shoot back up the ladder a free agent would be a godsend end of 2024. And we will have the cash.

Barring a major change in events, Naughton is going to Fremantle. It would have happened in the last trade period if Geelong didn't take on the Bowes salary dump.

Three-way trade involving Fremantle, Bulldogs and Geelong for Naughton, Darcy, Ratugolea and picks.

Why else would Fremantle be paying almost $1.8M of their cap between two rucks under the age of 25, if they weren't already planning to ship one of them out?

Dockers want Darcy moved before he becomes RFA in 2024; Naughton is apparently keen to come home to WA and Bulldogs are looking to trade before his final year in 2024 to get maximum value. Cats have wanted Darcy since before he was drafted and each of Stanley, Ceglar and Blicavs will be over 32 when this season commences - as soon as they clear some cap space (from retirements likely), they'll be knocking on Fremantle's door for a deal.

As for benefitting from RFA, M.Flynn from GWS is 25 and RFA this year - seems to be currently behind Preuss in the pecking order, so could be open to making a move. Would be a significant ruck upgrade on B.Williams and Jamieson for potentially little cost.

B.Fiorini at Gold Coast is RFA this year as well - not KPP of course, but at 25 he would help with the bottleneck in the list profile and could end up being another W.Brodie situation.

Georgiades and L.McDonald are off-contract in 2023 and 2024 respectively, but would still command a high trade price (McDonald especially so), which is what we should be trying to avoid when the priority remains maximising the draft.

Darling is 30, Allen 23 and Waterman 24. Unless an offer comes that is too good to refuse, the club shouldn't be making any trades for key forwards over the next 2-3 years.

T.English will be 27 when he goes RFA in 2024. Only if the club undergoes a rapid turnaround similar to what Sydney have managed over the next two seasons and are within touching distance of the premiership do I see any benefit in signing him.

Otherwise it's just a big chunk of money not spent on renewing Chesser, Ginbey, Hewett etc.

Interesting theory. I hadn't heard that Darcy wanted to go or that Geelong were in his ear. And it is hard to imagine Freo voluntarily trading him. On the other hand it does explain why they handed over all that draft capital and salary cap for a player in Jackson who doesn't really solve any of their problems for them.
