How well do you think Mark Duffield knows Winder? I doubt they have any personal relationship at all or that Duffield has spoken to him about much other than footy. More likely Duffield is just repeating the official line from inside West Coast and pretending it is a first hand opinion.

If yourself or your wife or your kids were driving their car and had the door randomly openned by some random stranger who head butted them twice for no reason would you still say the person who did it was not a violent person? Would you like your daughter dating somebody who had been convicted of that? I doubt it.
Football writers don't just regurgitate the club line you know, especially Freo supporting ones.

You think someone like Duffield wouldn't have a good knowledge of Winder since his junior days?

Not defending the act in the slightest but we've all done stupid shit when we were young/drunk that was completely out of character.

Thankfully the victim's injuries weren't serious.

I don't like that line of thinking because I've been well pissed plenty of times and never attacked anyone. However if, as reported, he hasn't touched alcohol since the incident, that's a good sign that he is going to learn from this ****-up and not do it again.

Dumb act by Winder no doubt

However, I’ve heard a number of people not tied to WCE (most notably Mark Duffield) describe Winder’s actions as being out of character so I wouldn’t say he’s obviously a violent person by nature

Sorry it’s not out of character if he did it….

Is joffa not a pedo because he is apparently of good character ?

Agree. There doesn't seem to be any pattern of poor behaviour.

He's a 20 year old, many 20 year old men show poor judgement when sober, let alone when they're hammered.

He's made a big mistake, and is lucky to have learned a lesson with only (relatively) minor damage being done.

Andrew Gaff and Barry Hall are the same person.

I'm firmly of the view that one of those three is clearly not, and will not be, AFL level in Bailey Williams. Cal Jamieson is borderline. So they should not be on our list.

I'm not saying burn a pick unnecessarily, but we can certainly use another young ruck on our list. It won't cause development issues if both they and Barnett are good enough.

Would rather recruit a mature aged ruck that can take a pounding and protect Barnett than get another Ruck that’s 6 years away

I thought the real comment in there was that Winder hadn’t drunk since the night of the incident.

Probably shows a bit of the commitment from him that it was a legitimate one mistake rather than a patterned behaviour.

He won’t be the first 20 year old to get caught up in a work function where the booze flows freely and he most certainly won’t be the last. By the sounds of it his Victim is Ok and this is a fair result in the scheme of things.

I doubt Winder goes to the Duffield house regularly for a Sunday roast with his best mate Mark. Oh I don’t know about that.

Seem to recall being outside the Cott one night when I saw Pav with Lauren and gave him a couple of quick Liverpool kisses.

He told the coppers his injury was a swollen nose, but they let me off saying there was nothing to see there.

Not a violent person and you would love your daughters to date me if I was 20 years younger!

People are complicated.

Did he do a shit campaigner thing? Definitely. Let's see if he displays similar behaviour again.

I don't have a violent act where the victim is not really hurt at all (by the reports) on the same level as a rape or a murder or say a glassing in terms of "one and done".

It deserves a punishment but in context to the spectrum of shit things people do to each other.

That was piss weak by Winder. Couldn't handle his piss and assaulted a stranger. He is damn lucky that the tourist hasn't corresponded with the prosecutor (so they probably don't have much evidence) and that the club paid for a KC to represent him. He could easily have had a criminal conviction for that.

The AFL needs to look at the junket they arranged as well. If clubs can't do mad Monday anymore, then having a piss-up after an exhibition game is obviously not on. Not to mention to irony of him assaulting an Asian tourist after being at the AFL multicultural event.

He's run out of chances in my opinion. Set a single foot wrong again (ie miss training, post poorly on social media etc) and he should be given the sack.

A fine and no conviction for opening a random persons door and giving them 2 head butts is piss poor .

I remember when it first came out the rumours were winder hit someone because he was racially vilified not an unprovoked double headbutt on a tourist because he was blind drunk .

Shit C#nt winder. GAGF

By that logic no one can ever do anything out of character, so the phrase may as well not exist.

This could become a really in depth philosophical discussion about the concept of identity and the self. But I doubt it.

“Out of character” usually means behaviour that’s an anomaly for that person, something you’d never expect them to have done and wouldn’t expect them to repeat. Andrew Gaff breaking an opponent’s jaw with a haymaker in his 175th AFL game, having never been so much as reported since he was a junior - that was clearly out of character.

Winder getting blackout drunk and assaulting a random stranger on a night out might well be out of character, I don’t know enough about his personality or history.

But you can’t just say “well he did it, therefore it’s not out of character”. That’s a massively overly simplistic way to look at complex human behaviour.
