Wow, thus far there has been a dramatic rise in Covid infection in Australia this week. Thus far only NSW, Victoria Queensland and ACT have reported weekly figures but each of these jurisdictions has seen a significant increase in Covid cases. NSW is up 13.74% while the others are up by over 23%.

Thankfully at this stage hospitalisations are only up marginally but with that rate of increase in infection hospitalisation will surely increase. There us always a degree of catch up.

It looks like that predicted November wave may have started. None of this should surprise any of us following the relaxation of mandatory isolation rules. The AMA warned State and Federal Governments about the consequences of what appears to be a purely commercial decision. They did not listen.

Yay, SA bucks the trend with a modest fall in numbers. SA cases down by 49 cases or 1.9%. Not much but it beats and increase. Hospitalisaions in SA have fallen by 7 cases in the last week with 43 people currently hospitalised in SA with Covid.

Meanwhile WA comes in with an 18% increase while Tassie records a 27% increase.

As I posted previously I am not sure why I bother with this data because since weekly returns were introduced the figures go up and down like a yo yo. We also have RATs underscored by an honesty based reporting system so how accurate is any of it?

Overall Australia's infection rate increased by 2708 cases or 8.86% in the last week. I do not think the pollies are much concerned with the number of infections. They are more concerned with hospitalisations as that is what puts pressure on the system and brings in the bad publicity. Hospitalisations across Australia actually fell by 82 patients in the past week.

Cases rising but hospitalisations lowering suggests that immunity is working
 
Latest news is that Victorian Health Authorities have detected the XBB Covid strain in Melbourne waste water. Victorian Health authorities are saying this new variant is responsible for the 20% increase in cases in Victoria over the past week. XBB was responsible for the sudden rise in cases in Europe over winter and has recently been detected in Singapore.

Symptoms of XBB are no more serious than previous strains but the variant has greater capacity to evade the body's natural immune system.

The XBB strain, which recently emerged in Singapore is already running rampant in Australia, where cases have risen tenfold in a few weeks.

The COVID LIVE site, from which I have been gathering data, shows new cases in SA for the week ending 28 October as 2,510. The SA Health site shows the official SA figure as 2,805. This is an increase of 492 cases over the previous week and a 20.87% increase.

Not sure where COVID LIVE are getting their SA figures from but they are suspect. I have checked Victoria, NSW and Queensland official figures and they are OK so at this stage it is only SA that is way off.
 
Saw this interesting doco on SBS on-demand which takes a US perspective on how health authorities are grappling with a global resurgence of measles, with record numbers recorded in Europe and deadly outbreaks in the Philippines and Madagascar. Due at least in part to growing anti-vaccination sentiment and parents refusing vaccination for their children.

This doco was made before the covid pandemic took hold.

Time will tell. The fact that hospitalisations are down is encouraging so far.

Interesting that younger people seem to be having more severe reactions to the virus than the elderly. Most of the healthcare workers I work with have been hit like it's the flu and have been unwell for a week while the majority of the elderly have been completely unaffected.

It seems that different variants have differing impacts
Yes we watch and see what the next wave brings, be it large or small.
I guess most of the elderly are boosted and can get paxlovid ( depending on their other meds) to lessen the impacts so that might be a point of difference.
I know we had a form sent out for this in from my father’s NH.
However how immune evasive or paxlovid responsive the new variants are, who knows yet.

Paxlovid is available to patients who display symptoms to warrant its administration. It's been a long time since I've had a patient who has needed it.

A combination of vaccination and reinfected appears to have created an immunity to the virus. Because staff have been wearing masks and PPE they have a weakened immune system. It would explain why they are having more severe reactions.

Point 1: You said “because staff have been wearing masks they have a weakened immune system”
You don’t know that, that has not been proven as fact.

Point 2 : Anti maskers seem to want it both ways.
At the same time they say masks are a waste of time and don’t work they ALSO say masks do work as proven by they weaken the immune system.
Can’t have it both ways.

Point 3: It is likely that T Cell depletion from Covid19 is weakening immune systems.

Point 4: You like analogies, I’ll give you one.
For several weeks after my grandchildren contracted and ( hopefully) recovered from initial covid19 infection they caught virus after virus. They were constantly sick.
For months before that not one infection, maybe slight runny nose once. Immediately after Covid19 they were constrantly sick.
Coincidence, maybe, but striking.

Now hopefully we will find out over time why RSV infections and flu seems more severe lately. There are various hypotheses, including T cell depletion, which has been demonstrated in post viral testing.

Point 5: Immunity debt is a misrepresentation of hygiene theory.

There is a difference between exposure to various microorganisms to bolster an immune system and continual exposure to a pathogenic microorganism.

It’s like saying why have clean water, why not keep boosting ourselves with cholera. Why wash our hands in food factories after the toilet, spreading salmonella is no big deal, it will just boost our immune system.



Oh and another point on masks…I am sure your staff didn’t wear masks at home or other places, only at work, so unless they stopped inhaling when they left work they were getting plenty of microbes etc. just as surgeons, theater staff, specialist isolation staff have for decades.

I don't ever recall suggesting masks didn't work?

Breathing in your own moisture for 16 hours is incredibly unhealthy.

RSV has been so prevalent because our patients literally have not been sick for almost 3 years. This is very unusual. Turnover has been low for us. It's been higher elsewhere mainly due to neglect.

We have been so obsessed with keeping them isolated from getting sick but we have no interest in keeping them fed or cared for.

Difference is salmonella isn't something you can really gain a tolerence from. Covid is. It also isn't preventing people from entering the workforce, ppe is.

We are about to find out the hard way that while you can gain immunity from covid, you can't gain immunity from neglect and starvation.

Are you unfamiliar with the staffing shortages?

As I said, you can gain immunity from covid but you can't gain immunity from neglect and starvation.
