Went to my phone store the other day and the young Indian chap who served me apologised because he was tired as he got a call the previous night to tell him his father back on India had Caronavirus.

Said it was way way worse in India than the numbers being reported. Each state reports differently, you only get recorded if you are wealthy enough to be able to go to hospital. The hundreds of millions that live in poverty don't get counted and you'd imagine that is where the virus hits the most.

Just thought you Covid loving weirdos on this thread might be interested.

I assume the same goes for most non western countries.

100 people at an outdoor party at Thredbo yesterday.
I dont get it.
NSW feels like its about to take off.
No hiding place.

We are hearing mostly about vaccine development, but apart from dexamethasone, very little info on known drugs.
Guess it's unfashionable with big pharma to find other already existing modulators for the disease. Less money in it.

Word is that Vic will report 357 new cases and 6 deaths today. Numbers are staying stubbornly high. Still no signs that numbers are declining
Numbers aren't doubling every day the last 2 weeks, floating between 200-400 , so what does this all mean, given the fears are of a doubling with these outbreaks??

Noticed that of last 10 deaths before today's figures are released, 9 of them were 80 and 90 year olds in an aged care facility. How many age care facilities have been struck in Melbourne/Victoria.

South Africa has more cases than the UK yet about 10% of the deaths. Must be because of their fantastic health care system and social safety net. That or the numbers are wrong.

A positive is that numbers aren't doubling. But Vic's Chief Health Officer was expecting to see numbers on a downward trend by now as the lockdowns came into effect about 2 weeks ago. I think non-compliance is a reason for the numbers staying stubbornly high. Community transmission is still too high and I think that's stretching contact and trace capability.

I think about 40 aged care facilities have been hit by the virus. The Vic government is implementing more measures to protect these facilities. One issue is the floating workforce. One infected care worker can spread the virus to multiple sites.

what I want to know is the flu death data the last few years and then this year.

how many flu deaths will be bundled into Covid?

How many death certificates have reason of death - flu?

All the deaths by flu numbers I see are guesstimates. I don't see flu/influenza on ABS stats figures for top 10 reasons per 10 year age group, until you get to over 75's and its put in as Influenza and pneumonia (J09-J18).

People who die of covid in Oz I assume all have covid on their death certificates.

And USA has flu death rate between 12 and 60k per year

The link below confirms what many of us suspected since the Cedar Meatworks outbreak. The casual nature of the workforce is a contributing factor.

If the Federal Government was going to spend big supporting business maybe it should have spent a little more to provide a safety net so that sick workers were not forced to go to work when they should have stayed at home. One infected worker results in many more cases. Like Job Keeper such a system could have been employer driven with the Federal Government providing meat works with a sum to offset payments to sick workers. You are sick, get a doctor's certificate and you get paid a percentage of your average weekly earnings while you are off work.

Interesting that the Victorian Government does not want to bite the bullet and issue enforceable regulations...

The Department of Health and Human Services declined to comment on why enforceable guidelines had not been introduced to workplaces such as aged care facilities and meat processors.

459 new cases and 10 deaths in Victoria. Of the 10 deaths, 7 were nursing home residents and one patient was aged in their 40s, the youngest death in Vic so far.

More then 42,500 tests were processed on Saturday, a record. So the % of positive tests is 1.1%

What will happen to the AFL season as now due to the high rate of new cases in Victoria I can’t see any games being played in Melbourne or Geelong in 2020. The cost of maintaining the 9 vfl clubs outside Victoria will eventually become
prohibitive. Those players will won’t to come home sometime before Nov/Dec. I can see player defection soon happening en mass.
This will be a problem the AFL will need to address sooner or later. Best of luck!

I agree. No games in Victoria this year. I think the current lockdowns in Vic will remain in place for a minimum of 2 months. That takes us to the start of October. Then a gradual easing of lockdowns over 2 months, hoping there are no major flare-ups. That's December.

That's the best case scenario. Games in Vic next year, at least at the start of the year, are no certainty if numbers don't start trending downwards in a short space of time.

This is a black day. Ten deaths overnight and another 437 positive tests with 4,233 active cases. The numbers are not doubling every day but they are not going down either. The Victorian CMO is on record as saying he wanted to see the positive test results drop by the weekend and that was two weeks ago.

The restrictions that are now in place are clearly not working and Daniel Andrews has some hard decisions to make. Face masks may work, I guess it is a bit early to tell, The writing is on the wall and Victoria is facing the prospect of shutting down completely to control the situation. They also have to tighten movement and social distancing controls on high risk work places such as Aged Care Facilities and Meatworks. This is no longer just about Victoria but about the entire nation.

No one knows how long this will take but I cannot see any public sporting events being staged in Melbourne until 2021. The Spring Racing Carnival will probably go ahead but without crowds. Racing did not stop during the earlier shut downs. Of course there will be no overseas entries.

So far this is blackest day of the pandemic for sure.

Not going down is ok as long as we are not going 600 - 700 upwards. Massive testing isolation and patience. A couple of more weeks and it’ll ease down.
We will continue to fight stupid though.

That is just it, it isn't OK. The numbers should be going down that is the whole idea of a lock down face masks etc. If the Vics don't reduce the numbers they, and the rest of Australia, risk being living with the current restrictions for a long time and if they lift the restrictions without reducing the numbers they risk becoming a small scale Florida.

As for that video sometimes a little information is dangerous. Bunnings obviously doing the PR bit and resisting calling the police while she was filming.
