I'm interested in people's thoughts about this.

He is an absolute gun athlete who many think could play aussie rules at the highest level. He can certainly run, is fast, evasive and strong, and has a fantastic leap. He pushes away tacklers easily with that great fend of his. He is also able to pick up a ball at his bootlaces while running full steam.

He would obviously need quite a bit of work with his kicking. He has got a good kick surprisingly, but i'm not sure what his ability to find a target would be like.

So what do people think?

(Btw, this is not a thread comparing the two games, crowd numbers, participation rates etc. If you want to discuss that, go elsewhere. The rest of us are sick of it.)

Well as queenslander and an avid league fan I believe that Greg Inglis can play AFL. I have watched his abilities grow from strength to strength all yr and if anyone could make the tough transistion it would be him. He what I would call a true athlete . And just remember he is only 19 he can still be moulded into a great ball player for any footy code. :thumbsu: And by the way I am not here to despute which is the better code I enjoy both games .

Funny how NBA atheletes are not much chop while Greg Inglis would "easily" adapt to AFL.

I think it's because Bball players come from a completely different background - we never see them roost the ball 50m or take spectacular marks/80m sprints down the line.

In answer to the question, if I wasn't a Storm fan, i'd call Pelchen right now and tell him to sign Inglis. ;)

Inglis, who will play on the left wing for Australia tonight, even impresses AFL players. Storm coach Craig Bellamy recently sent Inglis over to AFL club North Melbourne to practice collecting high balls, Aussie rules-style. After a few sessions, the North Melbourne coach asked his players what they thought of Inglis.

"Is there any way we can get him to our club?" was the reply.

Stay away from him, Roos. :p

Wouldn't mind having Franklin and Inglis in the same team :thumbsu:

Yes quite easly i reackon, seems to be the type of person who could play any sport at the top level. But rugby league have got him locked up for the rest of his life, i dont think he would even play union because of the massive contracts offered to him by the storm so he dosn't run away. But you never know maybe Eddy will offer him an open checkbook at collingwood and he changes his mind? I wouldn't put it past collingwood for trying.

some of the balls he took in the air were remarkable last night...he has courage to jump for it no matter where the players are, he didnt drop one all night.

probably, but wouldnt be a star as people put it, natural footballers will always beat natural athletes
He's much more than an "athlete". He's a terrific ball player. Look at the pics posted in this thread http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=278426 It would take him a season or two to adapt but he'd probably make a terrific CHF.

Inglis would excel in the AFL, he's a natural athlete with freakish ability.

What about Port a few yrs back when they enquired about Tuqiri what a gun he would have been!

Put it this way if Roberts-Thompson can convert from playing Union & hold down CHB at the Swans i'm pretty sure Inglis would be a Star.

He's probably a natural at sport. He can probably pick up a ball and be pretty good at it even if he hasn't played it much in his life. A natural freak of nature athlete.

Stupid comment. Im a natural sportsman but have the athletic ability of a mushroom. My natural ability only allows me to step up so far, ive played soccer (indoor, futsal and outdoor) at junior level, afl at junior level, league during my school days and until i did my shoulder in i was a better than average junior softball and cricket player. The only thing that held me back was the fact that im 170cm tall and wiegh in at around 97kg, have no arobic capacity what so every, but have a heart as big as phar laps. Natural sporting ability will only take you so far, if you lack the athletic ability you cant take that extra step. I know.

It takes years of practice to be able to kick a sherrin. Sentana has been at it for a while and he will be the first to admit it is harder than in practice as opposed to theory.

There are easily more AFL players who can adapt to the chuck and be tackled style of RL than the opposite.

Goodes could easily play RL and be a star and that is without any training. RL is too simplistic. AFL has too many specialised areas for any RL player to adapt to.

PS

Whats the bet RL trolls jump on this post;)

If that is your point, then that is pretty sad.

Just wondering how many games of league or rugby you have played? I've played all 3 codes at some point (aussie rules for longest), and saying that you could easily play without any training is just stupid. It takes a while to learn the angles you need to run in the two rugby codes. And it is much harder to get past a wall of defence, than it is to beat a man when you are able to run in any direction.

I have found the skills required to play aussie rules are more advanced than rugby or league, but you need to be a far better defender to play the rugby codes.

If Inglis worked on his kicking, i think he could play on a HF or HB flank with success.

Most top athletes could play a few different sports due to their physical advantages. How many AFL players could have had cricket careers?

commitment, athleticism and hand eye coordination and you can play just about any sport successfully

i know shane woewoden was a top notch cricketer

It's always possible, he'd need to get used to opponents coming from all directions and bouncing the ball a lot, also would need to learn to know when to run and when to rest somewhere, i think it's possible but very difficult, if he'd done it from a young age he'd be a great footballer maybe
