Its hard to use the UK as a sounding board for our own inevitable surge of omicron.

UK are in the middle of winter so immunity levels are at their lowest due to lack of vitamin D they also have a much more dense population.

TBH with our high vax rate , middle of summer and the omicron variant being much milder for hospitalisation we don't really have a much better opportunity to open up .

Apparently those attending the geisha bar have received texts to isolate.

I'm comfortable in having deleted the safe wa app, 14 months ago, so I'll never receive such text.
The teuth
The truth?

If I felt no ill effects, I would carry on with my normal life.
Hypothetically, if you had a sister with a newborn and you hadn't had your whooping cough vaccine, would you go to her place and handle the baby?

Omicron 5x less severe than Delta says Perrittet. fu** wouldn't want that to spread.

Well 5,000+ daily cases suggests that’s exactly what’s happening.

Perrotet is being typically misleading by simply saying it’s 5 times less severe. What does that mean? Feeling ill? Going to hospital? Admitted to ER? On a ventilator? Dead?

There is no specific figure for the degree of severity of Omnicron. Every study has different results at the moment.

Hospitalisations and ICU numbers have increased from 215 and 24 respectively to 347 and 45 in six days (17th to 23rd December).

Being less severe means little if it also spreads much more rapidly. NSW are about to cop a hammering.

Wouldn't have mattered:

It’s understood authorities are identifying attendees at Geisha Bar via the Scantek system, which scans a person’s identification and arrival time.

*information security hat on*

I wonder if Geisha patrons consented to their personal data being shared with health authorities?

That info would be regularly used by law enforcement, I don’t see why this would be any different.

I guarantee it's in some consent box we tick or acknowledge somewhere.

I dunno which thread to stick this in but since this is the more 'anything goes' thread then I'll drop it here:

Since Trouto posted about the covid vaccine not comparing to the polio and smallpox vaccines I've been thinking about the perception of historical medical events compared to the covid pandemic. According to wikipedia (who have citations for the data), the covid pandemic is the 6th ranked pan/epidemic by death toll in history.

Three of the top five are bubonic plagues in the 6th, 13th and 19th centuries. Taking the 13th century one (black death), the numbers quoted for deaths are between 20-50% of the estimated world population at the time. That seems a little unbelievable as most estimates have that recovering within a 50 year span.

Where I'm going with this, is along with Trouto's perception that the past was big and awesome, these estimates for deaths from / impact of historical pandemics might also be suffering from the same overestimation; ergo* the covid pandemic is likely greater than 6th on the all time list. We're in some fairly unprecedented times.

*vis a vis, Matrix 4 is out on Christmas. I'm keen. Even with Morpheus from Wish.

For the same reason law enforcement can't immediately obtain your medical hist.

I know the US are litigation nuts but there are a few successfully tried cases where folks have argued a reasonable person can not be expected to process the information they are consenting to. I might have to hunt it down but I believe the EULA on Microsoft Windows was an early example.

It's part of the reason some companies (BankWest for example) are producing 'simple T&Cs'.
