I do note that nearly 300 people have died of Covid in NSW in this week alone, something which seems to have lost the interest of most of the press as they pile on a premier whose state has had 9 total deaths in the two years of the pandemic.

No doubt it's a Mickey Mouse petition. But that doesn't mean that everything in it is wrong. The argument that we should open the borders when most of the most vulnerable people have recently been boosted seems strong to me.

Open the borders because the vulnerable are vaccinated for what reason ? People who can afford to travel the world can afford to isolate for 2 weeks . We are still in a global pandemic and death rates globally are rising again . Mining is this countries backbone and if its workforce is sick the country will suffer . Thanks. That actually does somewhat set my mind at ease as to the potential waning of boosters. Given that information, it looks like waiting a month or two while the community at large gets more third shots might be prudent. At the very least, it gives people a chance to take advantage of the reduced three-month waiting period for their booster.

That Israel graph is from Oct 2021, based on data from july and August.
They've pretty much gone full 4 booster since then, and their infection rates have sky rocketed well over double their previous peaks.

It's not the same petition started by the head of ICU at Charlie Gardiner. It is the same survey quoted above (the AMA surveyed their members) as "evidence" that doctors didn't support opening on Feb 5th

That petition is up to 19,000 sigs now. Its a shame it was deliberately undermined by a handful of dickheads and used by others to dismiss all of the legit people and the valid points underlying it.

This is why people get tied up in knots when they are trying to argue a "side" rather than just calling balls and strikes. When this bloke came out against McGowan's backflip he had to be dismissed. Now he has come out wanting tighter restictions he's back in the good books. What he is saying about restrictions on nighclubs and other density related curbs are just common sense (ie unlike alcohol mandates).

I guess 51% can be described as "more than half" whilst also meaning opinion is pretty much split down the middle in the medical community as to whether 5th of Feb was a good idea.

This one of the reasons I've been so critical of these press conferences that are clearly designed to scare the hell out of people. Perhaps in the moment its serves to justify whatever mandate he's dreamt up, however in the long run we need people to be confident and realistic once this thing starts inevitably getting going here. For a start, the last thing we need is thousands of people swamping our hospitals who could easily recover at home just because they have been gaslit into thinking its a death sentence.

Makes sense, we can't just let it rip uncontrolled as we know that will overload hospitals.

McGowan has really backed himself into a corner now. Once he puts in capacity restrictions, we are essentially in a "shadow lockdown" as he put it (when referring to the eastern states). If we're going to cop the restrictions then it makes it pretty hard to argue we should have the border shut as well.

Timing couldn't be worse with the Eastern states also turning the corner. By the end of Feb, they'll probably be out the other side and we will just be starting.
